Tyre Boss helps B&B Skips fit TY Cushion Solids

Beccles-based B&B Skips, which is part of the Radical Waste Group, recently bought a high specification JCB 437 Wastemaster from Watling JCB. The used model came with brand-new pneumatic tyres. However, business owner Julian Knights wanted a set of puncture-free alternatives to ensure the machine could work free from the risk of damage and downtime in the harsh environment of the waste sector.

Goodyear returns to Le Mans and FIA World Endurance Championship

MWheels refocuses business on wheel expertise

During the first half of 2019, Manchester-based commercial wheel services company MWheels has been implementing an evolutionary process to change its target. The company has sought to position itself differently within its markets; from a UK wheel distributor campaigning for legislative input on wheel safety, to a European provider of wheels and wheel services designed to make commercial operators more aware of the safety and business implications of fitting and maintaining the most suitable products for their fleets. “The last four months,” chief executive officer Matthew Mardle tells Tyres & Accessories, “have been a big success in following through on the strategies” implemented since the changes in leadership at the helm of the company in January – Mardle was appointed CEO, while company founder John Ellis took up a new position as chairman – and, in the longer term, since the company opened its European operation, MWheels GmbH, in Germany.

Cooper launches Pro Series LHT trailer tyre

Cooper Tire has introduced a new long haul trailer (LHT) tyre, which completes the company’s signature Cooper Pro Series product line-up with fitments at each tractor/trailer wheel position. The Cooper Pro Series LHT joins the Cooper Pro Series long haul drive and long-haul steer tyres that were previously introduced. The new trailer tyre is available in 295/75 R22.5, with additional sizes becoming available later this summer.

Continental SportContact 6 represents manufacturer’s UHP edge

Continental’s ultra-high performance summer tyre, the SportContact 6 is currently available in a range of 101 articles, produced for rims with diameters of between 18 and 24 inches. The manufacturer states that the tyre is particularly suited to pure sports cars such as the Audi R8 or Porsche 911 as well as vehicles such as the BMW 5 Series or Mercedes AMG, due to its high-grip Black Chili compound, tread design, and Aralon 350 reinforced construction, which offers safe driving up to 220mph.

Japanese giant Mitsubishi invests in UAE online tyre retailer

PitStopArabia.com, a UAE-based online tyre retailer, has announced that Mitsubishi Corporation has become a strategic partner and a shareholder in the company. The e-tailer described the investment as a “significant milestone” that will be used to bolster market share by expanding regionally. The value of the investment has not been disclosed.

Do tariffs and trade wars work?

At the time of going to press, the President of the United States of America is mid-way through a state visit to the UK. Before he even landed on British soil, President Donald Trump stirred up controversy by tweeting his disparaging thoughts about London Mayor Sadiq Kahn. Whatever view one might hold about the propriety of Trump’s visit, we all know that 31-gun salutes and tea with the queen are about more than niceties. Sure enough less than 24 hours into the state visit, presidential talk turned to trade, with Trump backing out-going Prime Minister Theresa May to complete Brexit negotiations and promising a “phenomenal” trade deal between the US and UK. But all this is set against the backdrop of all-out trade war between the US and China at the same time that Europe is involved in somewhat more Cold War-esque trade skirmishes with China as well. The questions are: do such measures work? And what do they mean for the tyre business?

Doublestar acquires Hengyu Technology

Qingdao Doublestar Tire, owner of Kumho Tire since July 2018, has once again grown through an acquisition. The Chinese tyre maker says it has completed the purchase of Shandong Hengyu Technology Co., Ltd. for RMB 899 million (£103.1 million). Doublestar disclosed in March that it had signed an agreement with Hengyu Technology’s administrator to acquire 100 per cent equity in the business.

Kordsa inaugurates new polyester yarn in Turkey

Operations have started at the recently-completed 3,500 square metre polyester line built at the Kordsa plant in Izmit, Turkey. Kordsa’s Tire Reinforcement business unit commenced work on the additional line in December 2017, and 100 million Turkish lira (£13.3 million) has been invested to provide an additional 7,000 tonnes of polyester yarn capacity. The project was carried out as part of plans announced in 2016 to invest $30 million in further capacity for Korda’s plants in Turkey and Indonesia.
