Apollo Tyres appoints APMEA marketing head

Vikram Garga is the new group head of marketing for Apollo Tyres in the Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa (APMEA) region. Announcing Garga’s appointment, Apollo says the industry veteran will spearhead the regional marketing team and take responsibility for marketing and product strategy for all product categories, dealer programmes, brand positioning and monitoring performance in conjunction with sales. Based out of Apollo Tyres’ corporate headquarters in Gurugram, India, Garga will report to Satish Sharma president of Apollo Tyres’ APMEA business.

The Volkswagen campervan is going electric, and just like its split-screen ancestor the T1 and many models in between, the new ID. Buzz will roll off the production line on Continental tyres. Depending on model and market, VW will fit Continental EcoContact 6 Q tyres in sizes 235/55 R19 105T XL, 255/50 R19 107T XL, 235/50 R20 104T XL or 265/45 R20 108T XL.

Wastefront partners Newcastle University in recovered carbon black study

Wastefront and Newcastle University have formed a partnership to enhance the recycling firm’s recovered carbon black (rCB). The university is a globally recognised leader in sustainability research, and will help the cutting-edge tyre recycling company complete an 18-month study to develop innovative industrial solutions for Wastefront’s first tyre recycling plant in Sunderland. The partners state that they want the North of England to be at the forefront of progressing circularity across Europe.

GB Tyres adds brands and staff amidst rapid growth

Midlands-based wholesaler GB Tyres has grown rapidly despite the challenges of lockdown and logistics during the last couple of years. Indeed, GB Tyre’s annual turnover has skyrocketed from £3 million in 2016 to full-year 2022 predictions of £50 million. Considering the company was only established in 2013, it is fair to say the business has grown to become one of the fastest growing importers and exporters of commercial vehicle tyres in Europe. Tyres & Accessories met up with commercial director Graham Hutchinson to find out more.

EcoVadis awards Pyrum silver status

An inaugural assessment by EcoVadis has resulted in a Silver Medal for Pyrum Innovations AG. The sustainability ratings provider awarded Pyrum, which has patented a pyrolysis technology for the sustainable recycling of end-of-life tyres, an overall score of 59 points. This places Pyrum amongst the worldwide top 25 per cent of all companies in its industry assessed by EcoVadis.

Nokian Tyres begins ‘controlled exit’ from Russia

Due to the war in Ukraine and subsequent, tightening sanctions, Nokian Tyres plc has determined that it is “no longer feasible nor sustainable” to continue operations in Russia. The Finnish tyre maker’s Board of Directors thus decided today to initiate a controlled exit from this market. Exit preparations start immediately and Nokian Tyres will evaluate different options for its departure, with “due consideration to local employees and legislation.”

This is because the Polish company isn’t just the largest manufacturer of inner tubes in Europe and a manufacturer of tyres for the off-highway segment – it also supplies rubber compound to big-name tyre makers.

Continental tyres OE on Mercedes EQB

New for 2022, the Mercedes-Benz EQB is a fully electric compact SUV that weighs in at 2.1 tonnes and delivers up to 292hp through its 66.5 kWh motor, power that will get it from 0 to 62mph in as little as 6 seconds. Versions of the EQB delivered with 19-inch rims as standard will roll from the factory on Continental tyres. Continental is supplying its EcoContact 6 to Mercedes-Benz in size 235/50 R19 103T XL.

USTMA: Tax credits for retreaded tyres would “level the global playing field”

The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) and its member companies have voiced their support for a legislative proposal to incentivise retreading. The Commercial Vehicle Fleet Retreaded Tire Utilization Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2022 (H.R. 8165), introduced to the United States Congress this week, would provide tax credits for fleet purchases of US retreaded commercial vehicle tyres.
