China now in 3rd place as source for EU truck tyre imports

In previous features on commercial vehicle tyres, Tyres & Accessories has noted the varied effects European Union tariffs on product manufactured in China have had on the market. Questioning whether the tariffs have “worked” is a complex question, because their effect on new tye segmentation and retreads have been varied across Europe’s major markets. Truck tyre markets in France and Germany reacted in very different ways to the UK, at least partially because the latter market was contracting anyway.

Everton Football Club renews Davanti commercial partnership

Everton FC and Davanti Tyres will continue their official brand partnership for a further three years, following the extension of their commercial partnership. The new deal was unveiled at Davanti’s first ever International Dealer Conference at Everton’s Goodison Park stadium in Liverpool on Friday, 28 February. Davanti discussed the impact of its Official Tyre Partner status with the club on global growth since the arrangement formally began in 2017, in addition to presenting further details of its 2020 plans.

Goodyear acquiring German wholesaler Reifen Baierlacher

Goodyear plans to acquire a tyre wholesaler in Germany. Should the deal gain approval from the relevant antitrust authorities, Goodyear Dunlop Tires Germany GmbH will purchase Weilheim, Bavaria-based wholesaler and retailer Reifen Baierlacher. The tyre maker has not disclosed how much it will pay for the family-owned business.

Strong beginning for Kenda’s UK comeback

As part of its commitment to being a ‘one-stop shop’ for motorcycle and scooter tyre retailers in the UK, Cambrian Tyres partners with all major brands in the two-wheel marketplace and supplies customers from its warehouse stock of more than 100,000 tyres. The wholesaler is also sole UK distributor of the Bridgestone motocross and Continental two-wheel ranges (see separate articles) as well as for the Anlas brand and, from the second half of 2019, Kenda. This last name is back in the local two-wheel market after a decade’s absence, and demand has started off on the right foot.

Measuring tyre wear & pressure in one pass – Michelin Partners with HGV network AS 24

Michelin is teaming up with AS 24, the HGV service station network that fuel company Total runs in 28 countries across Europe, to launch a new automatic tyre inspection service – Fleet Diag 24. The partners will launch their diagnostic offer in March. The rollout begins in a small way, with Fleet Diag 24 initially offered at just three sites in France, however, we can expect to see it introduced at many more of the 986 AS 24 outlets in the UK and Europe.

Michelin wins Tire Manufacturer, Technology of the Year at TTI Awards

Michelin and VMI were the big winners at the Tire Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence. Tire Manufacturing Innovation of the Year was won by VMI for its Synchro Crown Drum, while Michelin sealed the Tire Technology and Tire Manufacturer of the Year double, the former in recognition of its airless tyre, Uptis. Tire Industry Supplier of the Year was Eastman, while Environmental Achievement of the Year was RubberJet Valley’s environmentally friendly High-Pressure Water Jet technology.

Cooper Tire Europe supplying BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Championship

Under a new three-year agreement, Cooper Tire Europe will supply its rallycross tyres to the BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Championship. While all six of the championship’s competitive categories remain open to all tyre suppliers in 2020, this will change in 2021 and 2022 with Cooper becoming the exclusive tyre range for the ‘Production 4×4’, ‘Production’ and ‘Junior’ categories. The championship’s formal name also changes this season to the BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Championship Presented by Cooper Tires.

Innovative pothole fix Elastomac could help ease ‘pothole crisis’

Damage to the UK’s A and B routes is contributing to British commuters spending up to four days in traffic every year, and the problem appears to be getting worse. Digital driving app Waze has reporting an increase in potholes by 40 per cent over the past month, with 11,558 alerts made in the UK. Potholes cost British motorists £4bn every year according to Green Flag.

Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5 top performer in Gute Fahrt tyre test

Eight premium and mid-range tyres are the subject of the latest summer tyre test from car magazine Gute Fahrt. The German publication chose to look at 215/50 R18, a popular size for smaller SUVs. Testing was performed using a VW T-Roc, and the Gute Fahrt team benchmarked the eight tyres against the T-Roc’s original equipment rubber.

Sportec M9 RR – Metzeler’s latest supersports tyre

Metzeler has introduced a successor to its Sportec M7 RR supersports tyre. Called the Metzeler Sportec M9 RR, the new arrival claims a developmental heritage that benefits from road racing experience. Supersports and naked bike riders who chose the M9 RR will find dual tread compounds in both the front and rear tyres and a pattern based on ‘Pi’ that lends itself to quick warm-up times and maximised water evacuation when riding in the wet.

4×4 tyre sales remain strong, but SUV sub-segment growing twice as fast

Last month we heard that, according to the latest market data collated by analysts at GfK, both the value and the volume of the overall sell-out UK car tyre replacement market decreased in 2019.
