Crypto Tyres: How the tyre business is engaging with crypto currencies and blockchain technology

On 1 September 2022, the global crypto currency market was valued at a trillion dollars, but that figure actually peaked at $2.8 trillion in November 2021. And therefore, whichever way you look at it, cryptocurrency is now a huge economic entity in its own right. With roughly 38 and 18 per cent market share respectively, Bitcoin and Ethereum are the two largest out there. Digital currencies bring with them two main features that suggest they are the future: Firstly, because they work on highly encrypted blockchain networks outside the established financial system, they offer the potential for greater efficiency and securing; and secondly, the operate as decentralised entities, taking governments and state banks out of the equation and empowering businesses and individuals with the margins that were only previously available to banks.

Oak Tyres plans for high-demand winter season

With the winter months approaching and the cost-of-living challenge affecting many across the UK, the next few months are vital represent an important part of the year, Oak Tyres tells Tyres & Accessories. The wholesaler, part of Grouptyre, has been planning since early 2022 to strengthen its position. Oak Tyres’ winter tyre supply chain planning starts in February each year, with production running through the summer. This means that the brand has stock arriving from Autumn onwards for the winter months. Oak says it is anticipating “unprecedented demand” for sister tyre brand, Davanti, “due to its value proposition,” an eventuality it has prepared for.

“Fear & insecurity” within Nokian Tyres’ Central Europe region

The EU ban on tyre imports from Russia has hit one company particularly hard: Nokian Tyres. Prior to February 2022, the Finnish manufacturer produced 17 million tyres a year in a factory near St. Petersburg, 82 per cent of its global output. Ten million of these were exported, mainly to Europe. This has no longer been possible since 10 July, with consequences for Nokian Tyres’ Central Europe sales region.

Hankook becomes Formula E technology partner and tyre supplier

At the end of September Hankook announced that, as of next season, it will be the exclusive technology partner and tyre supplier of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The announcement was made at an event in The Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Austria on 27 September, where Tyres & Accessories was present to witness Hankook being officially presented with the newly developed Hankook iON race tyres.

Stapleton’s presents Triangle tyres distribution deal to dealers at PalmerSport event

In September, Stapleton’s Tyre Services became the exclusive Great Britain distributor of Triangle passenger car and van tyres. The deal, which has been in the making for the last couple of years, will build on the strengthening relationship between Triangle Tyre and the UK’s largest tyre wholesaler. It was finalised after comprehensive testing of the Triangle range by Stapleton’s and its ultimate parent company Itochu. In recent years, the company has become the largest distributor of Triangle products in Europe. Stapleton’s states that Triangle is a “strong strategic fit in the economy segment” of its portfolio. It will make the brand available to “all customers in every channel.” Unveiling the deal, Stapleton’s hosted key dealer customers and European representatives of Triangle at PalmerSport at the Bedford Autodrome. Tyres & Accessories also attended the event, taking the opportunity to speak to Stapleton’s managing director Andy Fern, who took the reigns in the first quarter of 2020 just before the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted business as usual, about the new deal and the evolution of the Stapleton’s business under his leadership.

India: Review recommends China TBR duties for 3 more years

India’s anti-dumping duties on Chinese-made TBR tyres are scheduled to expire this month, but tyre association ATMA requested a review of these on behalf of Apollo Tyres, JK Tyre & Industries and MRF. The Directorate General of Trade Remedies published the results of this Sunset Review on 16 September, recommending the government continue charging duties for a further three years.

Smart #1 arrives on Continental tyres

Smart Automobile has unveiled the #1, a full-electric five-seater with a range of up to 273 miles. Official launch photos suggest that smart will offer all four models in the #1 range – the Launch Edition, Pro+, Premium and Brabus – with Continental tyres as a standard fitment. Images issued by the media team at smart Europe GmbH depict various versions of #1 equipped with Continental EcoContact 6 Q tyres in 235/45 R19 V XL.

Nexen tyres OE on BMW X1 & iX1

Nexen Tire has become an original equipment supplier for the third-generation BMW X1 and the all-electric iX1. The tyre maker’s plant in Žatec, Czech Republic will manufacture a version of the Nexen N’Fera Sport tailored to meet BMW’s requirements for the compact SUVs. Nexen has not specified the tyre sizes it is supplying to BMW.

FCC TSR Honda France wins FIM Endurance World Championship on Bridgestone Tyres

FCC TSR Honda France has won the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme Endurance World Championship (EWC) title on Bridgestone’s Battlax tyres. This is the third time a team supplied by Bridgestone has won the world’s foremost series of endurance motorcycle races since 2018. The second placed Yoshimura Sert Motul ranked second in the EWC series, also on Bridgestone tyres. Bridgestone has supplied grippy, durable Battlax tyres to the EWC since 2017. It says this motorsport deal, alongside its other global motorsport partnerships, embodies its commitment to inspire mobility excitement under Bridgestone’s E8 strategy.

Michelin becomes global tyre partner of MAN Truck & Bus Driver Training

MAN Truck & Bus and Michelin have announced a new training partnership at Hanover’s IAA Transportation show. From January 2023, Michelin will begin a three-year global cooperation with MAN ProfiDrive, the driver training programme from the Munich-based firm. MAN said that Michelin’s commitment to sustainable motoring made the tyre manufacturer a good choice of partner. The programme trains commercial vehicle drivers in the safe operation of safety and assistance systems, fuel-efficient driving, and the use of telematics services, as well as other topics relevant to fleet managers and entrepreneurs in the transport sector.

Tyrepoint becomes Michelin Quality Centre

Maidstone independent tyre dealer Tyrepoint has joined the Michelin Quality Centre network. The family-run business was founded less than four years ago by father and son team Karl and Mark Webber. The joint managing directors have strong industry experience; Karl established his first dealership in 1978. Tyrepoint has built its customer base by offering premium service supported by online reviews and social media marketing. Martin Thompson, Michelin’s AGB brand manager UK & Ireland said, “we’re delighted to give them our seal of approval.”

Nexen tyres get Hyundai Ioniq 6 original equipment deals

The new Hyundai Ioniq 6 will roll off factory lines on Nexen Tire’s all-season N’fera AU7 EV and the N’fera Sport EV. The latest electric car from Hyndai boasts a range potential of more than 500km per charge. It contains a range of lighting technologies that communicate with vehicles and people, including dual-colour ambient mood lamps, flexible and comfortable indoor spaces, and interactive pixel lights. It uses a 400V/800V multi-fast charging system and V2L functionality in addition to offering dynamic driving performance, cutting-edge safety and convenience specifications.

Animal rights protestors target Muller milk truck tyres

Activists Animal Rebellion caused an estimated £80,000 worth of damage by drilling sidewalls or cutting valve stems of around 200 truck tyre at Müller Dairies’ Willenhall depot last week. The tyres were fitted to trucks used to transport milk, with the vegan group acting to interrupt the distribution of dairy products. Police reportedly made 11 arrests on suspicion of criminal damage.

GB Tyres expands warehousing, adds to PCR tyre sales plus new agri range

When the company’s full-year financial results come in at the end of August, turnover will have reached £53 million. So, in other words, the business is trucking along nicely and making good progress towards its goals.
