Lee Hutchings named Michelin’s Director of Services & Solutions

Michelin has appointed Lee Hutchings as Director of Services and Solutions for the UK and Ireland. In this capacity he oversees a division that looks after some of Michelin’s biggest customers and manages the tyres on more than 80,000 commercial vehicles. Hutchings will also play a key role in the growth of the company’s “with and around tyres” concept by linking in with Michelin Connected Fleet, the recently launched Fleet management brand in the UK.

Michelin: Clarivate innovation honour “goes to all of our global teams”

Analytics firm Clarivate has published its 100 Top Innovators 2022 list, and several familiar names are present. Continental debuts as a new entrant, whilst Bridgestone and Michelin both return to the list for a fourth time. Michelin shares that it received this recognition from Clarivate during yesterday’s R&D forum at its technology centre near Clermont-Ferrand, France.

Michelin to continue R&D with Hyundai

A memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Michelin and Hyundai Motor Group will facilitate the development of a new generation of tyres optimised for electric vehicles (EVs). The three-year agreement, a follow-up to the partnership of November 2017 that resulted in an exclusive Michelin tyre for the Hyundai Ioniq 5, covers joint work on tyres containing an increased level of eco-friendly materials, tyres optimised for next-generation EVs as well as a real-time tyre monitoring system for autonomous vehicles.

Pyrum Innovations, Siemens begin technology partnership

Through a new partnership agreement with the Siemens technology group, Pyrum Innovations AG anticipates the further promotion, optimisation and scaling of its pyrolysis plants for processing end-of-life tyres (ELT). Pyrum will utilise technology from Siemens’ digitalisation and automation portfolios, with Siemens supporting Pyrum and its customers in the selection of optimal process automation, process analytics, drive and digitalisation technologies, amongst other things.

Sailun to open US tyre development centre

Sailun Tire Americas is planning to open a US technical centre in Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA that will develop tyres for passenger, light truck, SUV, CUV and medium truck tyres applications as well as tyres for electric vehicles. Tyre developed there will ultimately end up at both OE and replacement destinations.

Sailun investing in 8th tyre factory

On 24 June 2022 Sailun decided to invest 15.18 billion yuan in building a new tyre factory in Dongjiakou, West Coast New District, Qingdao City, Shandong Province. The planned annual production capacity is 20 million sets of semi-steel radial tyres, 10 million sets of all-steel radial tyres and 150,000 tons of OTR tyres. At present, the Sailun board of directors has passed this investment proposal.

24/7 operations imminent at Carlton Forest pyrolysis plant

Carlton Forest Renewables reports that its pyrolysis plant, the first continuous pyrolysis plant for end-of-life tyres (ELTs) in the UK, is just “days away” from becoming fully operational on a 24/7 basis. The plant at Carlton Forest’s Worksop site in Nottinghamshire has the capacity to process one tonne of tyre crumb each hour, producing approximately 3.6 million litres of tyre pyrolysis oil (TPO) each year and around 2,500 tonnes of carbon char.

Bridgestone opens new US race tyre production site

An opening ceremony took place yesterday for Bridgestone’s new racing tyre manufacturing facility in the USA. The inauguration of the Advanced Tire Production Center (ATPC) in Akron, Ohio provides Bridgestone Americas with the means of enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of its race tyre production. Housing a team of 60, the US$21 million plant will manufacture all Firestone Firehawk race tyres for the NTT IndyCar Series.

SportContact 7 winner of ‘mini’ Auto Express UUHP tyre test

With a grand total of three contenders, the latest comparative evaluation from Auto Express may be able to claim kudos for being the smallest tyre test ever. The motoring publication examined the new SportContact 7 in size 235/35ZR19 91 Y at Continental’s Ulvade providing ground in the USA, fitting the tyres to a VW Golf GTI and pitting them against two rivals from the ultra-ultra-high-performance segment, the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S and the Pirelli P Zero PZ4.

Vredestein to launch all-season EV tyre

A new Vredestein tyre specifically developed for electric vehicles (EVs) will debut later this year. Sharing a few details about this upcoming all-season product, Apollo Tyres says it is currently evaluating the tyre through computer simulation and at proving grounds around the world following a “major new research and development programme” that includes close collaboration with leading car manufacturers.
