Out of the woods?

…or are we about to witness a real dip in tyre markets? While the massive drops in OE demand of a few years ago appear to have turned a corner, and while tyre manufacturers the world over are steadily ramping up production to pre-recession levels, some are questioning whether or not replacement markets have really felt the full force of the recession. Could 2011 be shaping up to be worse than 2008/2009?

MOT review – no decisions yet, says DfT

The MOT review has still not been formally announced and no decisions have been made, confirmed the Department for Transport (DfT) in a letter to the motor industry. In the wake of recent press coverage on the impending MOT review and the possible changes to its frequency, the DfT wanted to clarify to the industry where the review stood. In a letter addressed to the RMI, along with other key players in the trade, the DfT stated that although test frequency was under the review it was only a small part of a much broader review. Any reference in the press stating that the first MOT test will take place when a car is four years old, rather than the current three, is purely speculation on behalf of the journalist, the letter says.

HiQ adds voice to MOT changes opposition

The opposition to the UK Government’s proposed changes to the MOT test has acquired another voice, as fast fit network HiQ makes the argument that doubling the length of time between legally required tests will eventually cost motorists more: “The pockets of motorists will be hit harder than ever,” HiQ stated. Secretary of State for Transport Philip Hammond hopes to introduce the initial MOT test for new cars after four years instead of three, as it currently stands today.

TAFF Awards 2011 Preview: Environment Award

A big surprise in this category, with none of last year's finalists making it through to the shortlist. The remaining three are all new tyre manufacturers: Continental, Michelin (both picking up their third nominations in this year's TAFF Awards) and Yokohama HPT.

2011 TAFF Awards preview

It's that time of the year again, when the tyre industry casts its votes to pick the winners of the NTDA's Tyre & Fast Fit (TAFF) Awards. A voting form is included in this magazine (and in our July issue) with the names of those companies that made the final shortlist or votes can be cast via the NTDA website. The final shortlist was compiled from nominations from NTDA members.

The winners will be announced at the NTDA's Annual Dinner, which this year is being held at the Hilton Metropole Hotel at the NEC, Birmingham on 20th October.
The categories are the same as in previous years, but there is also a new award for 2011 – that of "Tyre Centre of the Year". Retailers are invited to propose a depot or garage for consideration and those centres nominated will be the subject of a "mystery shopping" exercise, carried out by Encircle Marketing, who have extensive experience in this area.
