Michelin cutting up to 2,300 jobs in France

Michelin has announced its intention to “evolve” its activities in its France by means of a three-year competitiveness plan covering all of its manufacturing, corporate and administrative operations within the country. The company is taking this step as a response to “profound, structural shifts in the global tyre market” over the past decade that have been “led by the massive influx of low-cost products.” The plan could see up to 2,300 of the 20,000 Michelin jobs in France cut over the coming three years.

ZC Rubber debuts Flagship Series –global rollout in coming year

In the final week of 2020, ZC Rubber launched its new ‘Flagship Series’ line, which as the name suggests will serve as a premium product within its four tyre brands, Chaoyang (Arisun), Westlake, Goodride and Trazano. Flagship Series arrives first in the Chinese domestic market ahead of its global rollout in the coming year.

The difference between lockdowns 1 and 2 for the tyre trade

A couple of weeks after the end of the UK’s second lockdown, Tyres & Accessories spoke with Micheldever Tyre Services wholesale director Graham Mitchell. Since Mitchell was part of the panel in our inaugural “Kickstarting your tyre business” webinar in May 2020 at the end of the first lockdown, we thought it would be good to catch up at the end of the year and compare the differences between the first and second lockdowns. In short, while many shops closed during the first lockdown, the vast majority were open for business during the second. We also discussed 2020 as a whole and looked forward to 2021.

Tyre importers should plan for lack of space on ships and freight increases

Back in April, Tyres & Accessories spoke to leading supplier of freight forwarding services to the UK tyre sector, Maritime Cargo Services about the perfect storm of circumstances complicating life for tyre importers. Then it was difficult to anticipate the logistical problems the industry would face by the end of the first quarter – at least far enough ahead to sidestep the issues entirely. Even armed with the expectation of disruption, the pressure has built at British ports throughout the year, especially in the last quarter as Covid began to spike again. As a result, Honda UK’s suspension of production became a high-profile symptom of the catalogue of issues causing bottlenecking and ultimately delays in the supply chain. With the end of the Brexit transition coming amidst the second spike of Covid-19 transmissions on 31 December, T&A asked MCS again about what difficulties distribution businesses need to plan for this winter.

Pirelli develops bespoke Scorpion Zero for Land Rover Defender

Pirelli has created a bespoke new Scorpion Zero All Season SUV tyre as original equipment for the latest Land Rover Defender. The new development reinforces the manufacturer’s partnership with Land Rover. Work on the bespoke tyre was begun at Pirelli’s factories in Carlisle and Milan, with Pirelli engineers working closely with their Land Rover counterparts. Over the full course of the intensive development programme, testing was conducted all over the world in the most extreme conditions possible, Pirelli adds.

BKT introducing 4 new Agrimax V-Flecto sizes

Agrimax V-Flecto is the flagship tyre within the BKT agricultural range, and BKT is broadening its application with the addition of four further sizes. One dimension – VF 710/70 R 42 – is already available and will soon be joined by VF 750/70 R 44, VF 710/75 R 38 and VF 710/55 R 38 tyres. Their introduction will increase the range to 22 sizes in total.

Vision 2030: Continental targets tyre markets in Asia, North America

The Tires business may have been an area of strength for Continental in 2020, but this doesn’t exempt it from the company’s recently-expanded restructuring plans. Upcoming changes include the closure of the tyre factory in Aachen, Germany, a facility Continental calls its “most cost-intensive” site in Europe. Continental covers these changes, and indeed its overall roadmap for the tyre segment, in its new Vision 2030 strategic programme.

Micheldever expands tyre distribution with new Exeter warehousing

Micheldever Tyre Services (MTS) has expanded its tyre distribution capacity with the addition of a new warehouse in Exeter and the expansion of its Nottingham and Walsall sites. The new 22,078 square foot Exeter location became fully operational in the summer. According to the company, the site expands stock-holding capacity by roughly 50 per cent from 11,000 to 16,000 tyres, whilst also providing an improved stock-keeping unit (SKU) range of 2,518 SKUs.

Giti Tire reviews 2020 motorsport season in new video

Giti Tire is showcasing its 2020 motorsport achievements in a new video. Despite Covid-19 restrictions, the manufacturer still set tyres on the tarmac in the Nürburgring 24-Hour Race and Endurance Series, the F3 Asian Championship, the British Truck Racing Championship (BTRC), and VW Fun Cup UK, among others. Its longstanding partnerships were joined by a growing Esports team, with 40 international drivers driving 30 different cars in online events around the world.

National Police and Ambulance tyre consumption compared

TVS Srichakra doubling off-highway tyre capacity

TVS Srichakra Ltd., the two- and three-wheeler as well as off-highway tyre manufacturer, is planning a 10 billion rupee (£102 million; 112 million euro; US$135 million) investment programme. According to the company, the investment will increase two- and three-wheeler tyre production capacity by 25-30 per cent and double of off-highway tyre capacity from current levels.

ChemChina entrusts Aeolus with Prometeon Tyre Group shares

Aeolus Tyre Co Ltd and its controlling shareholder, China National Tire & Rubber Co. Ltd (CNRC, which is itself owned by Chinese petrochemical giant ChemChina) executed a “share entrustment agreement” on 30 November 2020. According to the agreement, CNRC will “entrust” its 52 per cent shareholding in Prometeon Tyre Group Srl to Aeolus for three years. But the three-year term will be automatically renewed upon expiry.
