New lightweight bicycle inner tubes from Pirelli

Pirelli SmarTUBE is now on the market: the new inner tube with technology derived from the developments for World Tour team tubulars is available for all the brand’s clincher tyre models. In the custom version for tubular tires, the SmarTUBE was the subject of a long and careful development project, which required several months of engineering to perfectly match the inner tube to the handmade structure of the P Zero Race Tub SL. The clincher version – introduced today – incorporates much of the feedback from the World Tour project, with the aim of enhancing the performance of Pirelli clincher tyres and reaching a wider range of consumers and lovers of the brand.

Hankook continues Supercar Fest partnership

Hankook Tyre UK is the official tyre sponsor at Supercar Fest for a second year. After the event’s successful debut in 2019 at Shelsley Walsh, event organisers will be hosting two events in 2021. Supercar Fest: The Runway will take place on 30 May at Sywell Aerodrome in Northamptonshire, which will see the supercars go head-to-head on a one kilometre runway whilst Supercar Fest: The Hill Climb will be returning to the historic Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb, in the heart of the picturesque Worcestershire countryside on 29 August 2021. Both events will offer exclusive supercar, classic car and motorsport demo runs, trade stands, live music, and close-up experiences in ‘The Paddock’.

TRA supports West Mercia Police tyre-tagging scheme

The Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) is supporting a West Mercia Police anti tyre fly-tipping initiative. The campaign, which involves retailers and others handling waste tyres, offers special marker pens to identify the origin of tyre. TRA-branded handouts and posters promoting the campaign will also be available.

Germany: Goodyear cancels public holidays to clear OEM tyre backlog

Germans can forward to a number of public holidays in the coming weeks, but part of the workforce at the Goodyear Dunlop tyre plant in Hanau won’t be taking these days off. Local media sources report that the plant is responding to production backlogs by declaring the Ascension, Pentecost Sunday, Whit Monday and Corpus Christi holidays to be “compulsory work days” at the Hanau facility.

Hankook Tire’s Q1 figures show increased turnover and operating profit

Hankook’s 2021 Q1 financial results show consolidated global sales rising 12.6 per cent YoY to KRW 1.61 trillion (EUR 1.203 million) and an operating profit of KRW 186 billion (EUR 138 million); an increase of 75.5 per cent YoY. As the global market recovers from the impact of the pandemic, Hankook’s business has also been steadily recovering since the second half of 2020. The company is seeing sales stabilise in several major markets that include Europe, North America, and China, particularly in the high-inch tyre sector (tyres with diameters 18 inches or higher.) Global sales of high-inch tyres accounted for 38 per cent of total tyre sales, which is up 4 percentage points compared to the same period last year.

Pirelli introduces new lightweight tubular cycle tyre

A little more than three years after returning to professional cycling, Pirelli is preparing to launch an innovation that will redefine the bicycle tubular tyre; the P Zero Race Tub SL. The new rubber, equipped with a special inner tube, guarantees a reduction in overall tyre weight of more than 10 per cent, while maintaining the same grip, smoothness and reliability characteristics.

Goodyear back with BTCC Wingfoot award

As Goodyear returns for another season as tyre supplier to the KwikFit British Touring Car Championship (BTCC), it is also bringing back the Wingfoot Award for the 2021 season. In addition, the tyre maker will launch a competition that gives BTCC fans the chance to present the Goodyear Wingfoot Award to the 2021 season’s winner and also bag a set of Goodyear’s award-winning Eagle F1 SuperSport tyres for their car.

TBC Brands president Marty Krcelic retires

Marty Krcelic, president and chief operating officer (COO) of TBC Brands and executive vice president of TBC Corporation is set to retire effective 30 June 2021. Under his leadership, TBC Brands has become one of the largest distributors of proprietary brand tyres in North America. Geoff Doster will succeed Krcelic to lead TBC Brands as senior vice president of sales. His responsibilities will be expanded to include oversight of TBC Brands operations, customer service, commercial truck tyre sales and equipment and non-tyre sales.
