Giti-sponsored British Truck Racing Championship heads to Thruxton

Giti Tire will travel to Thruxton this weekend as the 2021 British Truck Racing Championship, of which the manufacturer is the sponsor, prepares for its second round. Last time out at Brands Hatch (5-6 June), Giti’s drivers secured the team’s first victory and four further podium finishes over five races. Martin Gibson, Giti Tire’s manager – EU Testing Centre and Motorsport UK, and Stuart Oliver of Team Oliver Racing, are competing in Giti Tire Motorsport designed trucks. Gibson won the fourth race at Brands, while Oliver finished in second place, repeating his achievement in race one.

Growing EV/hybrid tyre demand: Bridgestone investing in Brazil

In order to meet increasing local demand for high-tech and premium tyres and in response to national and regional market share gains, Bridgestone is investing in its manufacturing facility in Camaçari, Brazil. The more than R$700 million (£101.7 million) investment will go towards modernising the plant and increasing production capacity by more than 20 per cent. The project will begin by the fourth quarter of 2021.

RRG raising the profile of major repair and retreading businesses

At the end of March, UK trade association, the National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) announced that it is launching a new Responsible Repairer Group (RRG) for companies providing major repairs for commercial vehicle, OTR, agricultural as well as plant and equipment tyres. The establishment of the new RRG picks up on the precedent of a similar committee that ran for 20 years until a decade ago and sought to represent the views of those offering major repairs and the companies supplying them – two areas of the tyre business that overlap with the wider retreading segment.

Sailun developing ERange EV specific tyre line-up

Sailun Tire Group is developing the ERange EV, tyre line-up in order to cater for growing demand for electric vehicles. According to Sailun Tire Americas, the new range is expected to reach the (US) market in 2022. At the point of its launch, the ERange EV portfolio will offer 90 per cent coverage of the electric vehicles on sale.

Supercomputer grant aiding Continental’s research into tyre & road wear particles

Together with the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) and the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon in France, tyre maker Continental has received a grant worth 43 million core hours of supercomputer time. This grant comes through a Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe (PRACE) initiative and will speed up and expand the partners’ research into the decomposition of rubber polymers, a key aspect of the joint research they’ve conducted on tyre and road wear particles since 2014.

Hankook Tire describes its receipt of a General Motors Supplier of the Year award as an honour. The company is one of 122 suppliers around the world, including five tyre makers, acknowledged for exceptional performance in the 2020 calendar year.

Goodyear introduces DrivePoint TPMS

Goodyear is launching a new and “very user-friendly” tyre pressure monitoring system for HGVs and trailers. With DrivePoint joining the existing TPMS and Drive-Over-Reader smart tyre monitoring solutions within Goodyear’s Total Mobility portfolio, the company can now offer three alternatives.

Michelin introduces AGV-specific port tyre

Michelin has launched what it calls the “first tyre specifically designed for automatic guided vehicles (AGV) operating in ports.” This is the Michelin X AGVEV, which the tyre maker currently offers in one size – 18.00 R 25 – through its dealer networks in Europe and Asia. Michelin intends to extend availability to other regions at a later date.
