Nokian Tyres: 116.2-million-euro loss down to Russian car tyre production gap

Nokian Tyres reports that its fourth-quarter 2022 net sales totalled 411.3 million euros, down 19.8 per cent from 512.6 million euros in October–December 2021. Operating profit was 13.5 million euros (Q4 2022: 88.0 million). Despite that, the company’s full-year 2022 net sales grew 3.6 per cent to 1,776.1 million euros (2021: 1,714.1 million euros). However, that wasn’t enough to prevent a full-year 2022 loss of 116.2 million euros (2021: 268.2 million euros profit). Executives put the fourth-quarter declines down to “lower passenger car tyre supply volumes…”, something that is a veiled reference to the fact that the company is wrestling with a serious passenger car tyre production gap.

Higher rim size car tyre sales rising in UK’s stratified recovery – GfK

Challenging trading conditions persist in the UK thanks to various interlocking crises, though 2022’s replacement tyre market demonstrates the way some segments resisted the strong headwinds better than others. While overall tyre sales (units) were basically flat versus 2021, any anticipated surging recovery from a pandemic induced nadir was, broadly speaking, put off for another year. Contrastingly, the value of the overall market surged, though this effect was more due to inflation and increasing prices than a switch towards higher-value products. Having said this, the picture painted by analyst GfK’s data, based on the company’s “panelmarket” of tyre retail sell-out sources from January to December, is also one of stratification.

Britishvolt, UK car manufacturing and OE tyres

In May-2020, we needed a lift. We’d all been through the first and arguably harshest lockdown and Prime Minister Boris Johnson modified the COVID-19 message from “stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives” to “stay alert, control the virus, save lives”. In other words, not knowing that further lockdowns would follow, the PM was working towards easing restrictions and reopening the economy. Within the automotive sector many tyre specialists, garages and fast-fits had closed along with OEM factories and car dealerships. One result of the latter was that car production figures fell to post-war lows. What better time to back a British electric vehicle battery manufacturing gigafactory? Several projects came to the fore. There was even talk of Elon Musk considering a Tesla gigafactory in the UK. But it was BritishVolt that Boris Johnson put his name to.

Extending first MOT deadline ‘will increase defective vehicles, tyres’ – TyreSafe

Road safety charity TyreSafe has joined a growing chorus of automotive industry opposition to the latest proposal to extend the intervals of the MOT test. The organisation, which has members from all spheres of the UK tyre business sector as well as councils and emergency services, said that plans to require a first MOT after four rather than three years would increase the number of defective tyres and vehicles on the country’s roads. It explained that while new vehicles are often safer than ever, the advanced safety systems they incorporate often rely on the roadworthiness of tyres. Research by TyreSafe and its members suggests that putting more responsibility for ensuring tyres’ roadworthiness on UK motorists could lead to illegal and unsafe tyres remaining fitted to vehicles for longer, as many motorists do not check their tyres frequently enough.
