Online tyre pricing trends to June 2023

During the last few years, tyremakers have repeatedly increased prices. The combination of pandemic-related complications, lower car production rates, higher shipping costs as well as higher raw material costs meant that was inevitable. More recently, the situation was compounded by unusually high rates of general inflation driven by increased energy costs that came as the result of war in Ukraine. However, shipping costs are now lower than they were and industry sources report that tyre manufacturers are beginning to change their previously one-way price movement policy. But is that reflected in sell-out pricing? Specifically, what about the stereotypically more price-drive online etail tyre business? Tyres & Accessories got in touch with Encircle Marketing, which specialises in the kind of market research that can answer those questions, in order to find out.

Hankook exhibiting its iON tyre family at the London EV Show

Hankook will showcase its iON range of specialist electric vehicle tyres at the London EV Show (28-30 November, ExCel London, Stand number ES11). The London EV Show is the largest international trade show and conference focused on the electric vehicle industry in Europe. Hankook launched the iON range in 2022, tyres with a technological emphasis on EVs leading to reduced rolling resistance, low noise, and high resilience. This means that compared to conventional tyres, the tyres offer increased range per battery charge. Hankook iON products are also designed for the high torque immediately produced by powerful electric vehicles. Overall this means a better driving experience for EV drivers.

Import glut ripples across European truck tyre market

The ups and downs of European retreading continued last year. According to current figures from the European Tire & Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA), the association members retreaded and marketed a total of 4.298 million truck tyres in Europe (excluding Turkey) in 2022. This corresponds to a decline of at least 6.2 per cent compared to the previous year, but is still 4.9 per cent above the figures for the previous year. However, since the new tyre business of the ETRMA members was largely stable (down 0.5 per cent), the importance of retreaded truck tyres fell again significantly compared to the new tyre market and was only 37.2 per cent at the end of last year. The association’s figures also show something else very clearly: the EU tariff effect, which had reduced imports of truck tyres (by non-ETRMA members) for a number of years, has now completely fizzled out.

The top tyre e-tail websites 2023 (UK)

Following on from our analysis of the leading tyre retail web sites of bricks and mortar businesses, we now turn our attention to tyre e-tail operations. As it did in the retail side of things, Halfords once again tops this table, but with the integrated Halfords Autocentres name out of the equation, this time we were able to break down the component parts and quantify that traffic (see chart and separate breakdown column). That breakdown clearly shows two things: firstly, the scale of the different Halfords online tyre retail operations; and secondly, that Halfords acquisition of Axle Group Holdings/National Tyres brought significant online assets with it.

The UK’s top 10 tyre retail web sites 2023

There’s no denying that the tyre business has become more digital and connected than ever before, but there are a number of sides to that equation. We know that between 60 and 80 per cent of tyre-buying consumers were doing pre-sale research online before the pandemic. Similarly, industry insiders have been saying that 10 per cent of tyres are bought online for something like a decade now. But anecdotal evidence from tyre retailers themselves reveals that, amongst those working for the large chains at least, many customers walk through the door to receive a tyre change that has already been booked online. Apparently, some of the younger generation just walk in and hold up a QR code on their phone! This month’s Tyres & Accessories looked into these kinds of questions, asking what it means for the tyre business to be digitally native. And it starts with a brand-new ranking of the leading tyre retail, e-tail and tyre comparison websites.

‘Stronger together’: the Yokohama TWS off-highway tyre integration delivers many opportunities – Pompei

In May, Yokohama officially completed the acquisition of Trelleborg Wheel Systems. As a result, the well-respected off-highway tyre and wheel manufacturer rebranded as Yokohama TWS. With any acquisition, questions of integration are front-and-centre. In Yokohama’s case, the previous acquisition of Alliance Tire Group, which now runs under the Yokohama Off-Highway Tires (YOHT) banner, brings with it further questions relating to the integration of the businesses and their respective brand portfolios as well as how the different operations will be organised and practically structured in relation to one another. With all this in mind, Tyres & Accessories recently spoke to Paolo Pompei, president and CEO of Yokohama TWS, in order to hear the latest on the integration process.
