Yokohama Rubber establishing tyre sales JV in Malaysia

From the start of next year, Yokohama tyres will be sold in Malaysia through a newly formed joint venture company. Tyre maker Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd. will hold a 51 per cent stake in the new Yokohama Tyre Sales Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., with the remaining share held by YHI (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (YHIM), subsidiary of the exclusive distributor of Yokohama tyres in Southeast Asia, YHI International Limited (YHI). Akira Nakamoto has been appointed managing director.

M&N Transport finds Michelin truck tyre longevity, fuel-efficiency ‘can’t be matched’

M&N Transport is a Wiltshire-based bulk transport firm. The company runs its growing commercial vehicle fleet of 35 trucks and 40 trailers exclusively on Michelin, having found the tyres to last significantly longer than any other truck tyre in the market. M&N is also utilising Michelin’s Effitrailer telematics package across its fleet of trailers and the company has experienced reduced downtime and cut its fuel costs since making the switch to Michelin, improving the sustainability of its operation in the process.

John Howe named Michelin UK & Ireland MD

Michelin Tyre plc has appointed John Howe as Managing Director for the UK & Ireland, with effect from 1 January 2022. He will also hold the role of B2C Sales Director, with responsibility for the company’s car, motorcycle and bicycle markets.

Carbon black: Goodyear collaborating with Monolith to reduce CO2

Goodyear Tire & Rubber may soon be utilising carbon black produced from methane and/or biomethane in its tyres thanks to a new partnership with US-based clean materials firm Monolith. The two companies have signed a collaboration agreement and letter of intent covering the development and potential use of such products, which are made through a plasma-based methane pyrolysis process.

Bolder Industries acquires former Pyrolyx plant

End-of-life tyre raw materials firm Bolder Industries has purchased a former Pyrolyx facility in the USA. It will retrofit the plant in Terre Haute, Indiana, which ceased operations in March 2020, with the Bolder Industries proprietary solution. Bolder will use the facility to increase its manufacturing capacity and commence production there early in 2023.

General Tire tailors Grabber AT3 for camper market

In response to market demand, General Tire has introduced the first all-terrain tyre with a C-identification for campers and vans. This new tyre, part of the General Grabber AT3 range, is available in size 235/65 R16 C.

Prinx Chengshan acknowledged for energy efficiency

When the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation announced its list of most energy efficient companies within the petrochemical industry (for 2020) in October, it recognised tyre maker Prinx Chengshan as a leading ‘Energy Efficiency Benchmark Company’ for the sixth year in a row. Prinx Chengshan attributes these half-dozen consecutive accolades to its focus on sustainability in recent years, including energy and materials conservation as well as efforts to promote a circular economy.

Germany: Falken further expands distribution presence

Falken Tyre Europe has further expanded its warehousing in Germany by becoming an anchor tenant of tyre wholesaler Tyroo GmbH. Located near the centre of Germany, the Tyreoo site in Neuhof enables Falken to continue developing its retail strategy, expand its customer base amongst car dealers and increase its presence in the German market.

Looking forward to a better 2022, despite “disruption”

One way our culture sums up the past year is to nominate a fitting word that encapsulates the spirit of the age. Last year our word of the year was “unprecedented”. This year the (OED) Oxford English Dictionary word of 2021 is “vax”, which offers us all – as if it were needed – a reminder of the continuing presence of Covid-19 during the last year.

Discount Tire buys Tire Rack

Discount Tire, a leading independent tyre and wheel retailer in the US is acquiring Tire Rack, which is known for its tyre tests and is a “consumer-direct source for tyres, wheels and performance accessories”. According to the company, the investment is part of Discount Tire’s vision of creating an “Easy, and Safe omnichannel, B2B, and fleet customer experience”. The transaction is expected to close on 31 December 2021.

Big Atom plans Ellesmere port expansion plus 2nd recycling site

Big Atom has big plans. The circular economy start-up, which already boasts the North West’s second-largest tyre recycling plant, is set to ramp-up capacity at its Ellesmere Port headquarters and has plans for two more additional locations as well as the implementation of its pyrolysis technology in the next year or two.
