Pirelli launches completely renewed Scorpion SUV tyre range

Earlier today Pirelli launched a totally overhauled Scorpion SUV tyre range. In short, the company is taking great steps towards a leading position in the future electric SUV tyre market and is already dominating in the SUV/CUV tyre sector of today. With the new tyres scoring 100 per cent AB tyre label ratings as well as upwards of 7 per cent improvements across the range in wet and dry braking, the company is making a strong case that it can achieve its goals.

Hankook Tire 2021 results

Tyre maker Hankook has released its results for the 2021 financial year. The company achieved global sales of KRW 7.142 trillion (£4.4 billion), 10.7 per cent higher than in 2020, and a year-on-year increase in operating profit of 2.2 per cent to KRW 641 billion (£395.1 million). Momentum slowed in the second half of the year as the global economy collectively tackled issues such as global supply chain disruption, semiconductor shortage and rising raw materials costs.

Vesper: Maxion, Taskmaster extend collaboration

In autumn 2020, global tyre and wheel assembler Taskmaster Components introduced the Vesper by Maxion Wheels, a complete line-up of steel trailer wheels developed with and manufactured by Maxion Wheels. The two companies have now announced a three-year extension to their supply agreement.

Drivers lack basic safety knowledge – Halfords survey

Halfords’ Tyre Safety video game, 20,000 Miles in Two Minutes, launched in October for tyre safety month, was aimed to test driver’s knowledge and raise awareness around tyre safety standards. As of today, the game has been played over 7,000 times, revealing that many drivers lacked basic safety knowledge.

Road Hero supplying Kwik Fit

Road Hero is supplying its spare wheel solution to Kwik Fit. The deal means over 600 Kwik Fit centres are able to “both tailor and equip Road Hero kits for their customers, ensuring that the dread of getting a puncture when you travel becomes the stuff of mere inconvenience…”

India’s competition body shares news of tyre maker cartel

Yesterday the Competition Commission of India (CCI) finally made public the news that back in 2018 it found five tyre makers and India’s tyre industry association guilty of contravening the provisions of India’s Competition Act by indulging in cartel activities in 2011 and 2012. All protagonists have been fined for their actions.

Expansion – production has changed, but it is certainly ramping back up again

Last month, this column suggested that “acquisitions, consolidation and sustainability” were three words that will sum-up developments in the tyre business in 2022. Judging by what has taken place in the weeks since that text was published, the overall argument was pretty sound. However, in retrospect it also seems pretty clear that we could have, and perhaps should have, added in a fourth term – “expansion”.

OE deals demonstrate expanding Yokohama Advan range’s qualities

Yokohama’s flagship Advan tyre range has secured original equipment approvals from some of the world’s leading vehicle manufacturers, such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche. The manufacturer will launch a new flagship replacement market tyre in 2022, the Advan Sport V107, developed for premium vehicles in an initial range of 30-plus sizes between 18 and 23 inches. Versions of the tyre developed alongside leading OEMs, have already been specified for fitment on a variety of new models, such as the Brabus Off Roader range and BMW’s first fully electric “sports activity vehicles.”
