Point S Summer tyre benchmark tested by TÜV SÜD

Point S, the international independent tyre dealer and car maintenance network, has announced positive results of third-party testing of its Summer tyre. The tests, which examined the safety, quality and performance of the product, were conducted by independent technical testing organisation, TÜV SÜD, which is internationally renowned for its impartial insight into the quality of products and brands.

Carbon black: ATSM proposes rCB standard

ASTM International’s recovered carbon black (rCB) committee (D36) is developing a proposed standard for differentiating between various rCB products and providing quality control tool for producers and users. According to ATSM International member Pieter ter Haar, the voluntary consensus standards developer and implementer’s proposed WK81244 standard will aid the adoption of recovered carbon black produced from end-of-life tyres.

25% of Neumáticos Andrés sales are exports

The evolution of its International Department is behind the recent growth in exports from Iberian Peninsula-based tyre distributor Neumáticos Andrés. Exports accounted for 25 per cent of its 2021 sales, with deliveries reaching customers in more than 30 countries around the world.

Hankook exhibiting at Road Transport Expo 2022

Road Transport Expo is a new commercial vehicle trade show that will take place at the NAEC Stoneleigh in Warwickshire between 30 June and 2 July. More than 90 exhibitors have signed up, including Hankook Tyre UK, which plans to showcase its portfolio of commercial tyres including the new SmartFlex AH51 and SmartFlexDH51. Visitors can find Hankook at Stand F4.

Yokohama shares 2022 motorsports activity plan

Yokohama Rubber views motorsport engagement as “crucial” to the development of new tyre technologies for its Advan and Geolandar brands, and this focus is reflected in its motorsports activity plan for 2022. Not only will the company participate in a wide variety of motorsport events in its home market Japan and around the world, from top-level championships to grassroots racing, the tyre maker also intends to begin using its presence in motorsport to further its development of tyres that use renewable and recyclable materials.

E-bike “that’s engineered and built like a motorcycle”

Launching in early April, the SX-250 series III from Nuneaton-based e-mobility company Eskuta, combines the design features of a motorcycle with all the cost-saving benefits of an e-bike, says the manufacturer. The SX-250 provides an alternative to the more traditionally styled electric bikes currently on offer. Enhanced features include, rear view mirrors, indicators, motorcycle grade adjustable suspension, a motorcycle grade braking system, handlebar controls, LED lighting, alarm, immobiliser, keyless-go and alloy wheels with tubeless tyres.

Prinx Chengshan: Profit down 24.7% despite higher revenue in 2021

The difficulties that tyre makers are facing at present were reflected in Prinx Chengshan Holdings Limited’s financial results for 2021. Although company revenue increased 20 per cent year-on-year, a “significant increase in raw material prices and ocean freight rates” dragged gross profit down by approximately 24.7 per cent.

Grant to aid Bridgestone’s guayule research

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Joint Genome Institute has awarded Bridgestone Americas a research grant to advance its optimisation of guayule, a drought resistant, desert shrub that shows promise as a local source of natural rubber for tyre production. Bridgestone has spent more than a decade researching guayule rubber for use in tyres.

Ukraine war continues putting tyre production under pressure

At the start of the year this column predicted a positive 2022 for the tyre business on the basis that we are better prepared for the unknown because of the adaptions made during the last few pandemic years. I still believe that. But my thesis is being tested by the implications of the now month-long war in Ukraine. All our expectations are being tested. For example, never before have I received an email which switches from normal editorial matters to “our country has been invaded” from one line to the next.

Grabber GT Plus joins General Tire’s SUV range

While Continental’s General Tire brand may be best known for its off-road and all-terrain products, General Tire offers a wide range of road tyres. The Grabber GT Plus is the latest tyre to join the General Tire line-up. Replacing the Grabber GT, the Grabber GT Plus offers “a marked improvement in performance in all areas including economy and safety”, according to its manufacturer. Specifically, this means a 12 per cent reduction in rolling resistance and a five per cent improvement in mileage along with “enhanced wet-weather performance”.

Supplier of the Year: GM awards 5 tyre makers

At a ceremony held in Phoenix, Arizona this month, General Motors (GM) honoured 134 suppliers based in 16 countries. The vehicle manufacturer’s 2021 Supplier of the Year awardees included five tyre makers – Bridgestone Corporation, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Hankook Tire & Technology, Maxxis Tires and Michelin North America.

GRI gains trio of National Business Excellence awards

Sri Lankan tyre maker GRI shares that it has received three awards for demonstrating excellence in business whilst contributing to the country’s economic advancement. It accepted these honours at the recent National Business Excellence Awards 2021, which was hosted by the National Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka.

All-female front desk takes Northampton garage into First Stop network

The manager of one of the latest independent garages to join the First Stop retail network is committed to creating the most welcoming customer environment in the industry, supported by an all-female front desk. Kim Dorr decided to embark on a career in the industry to dispel common stereotypes associated with garage forecourts after feeling intimidated and undermined when taking her car to the garage. She aimed to create a warm, welcoming environment at Northampton-based In Town Automotive, featuring a children’s play area, a screen showing live video updates of technicians’ work, and bunches of fresh flowers from the local florist. Now Dorr is heralding a new chapter for the centre as it gains national sales, marketing and purchasing support from the First Stop network.
