Hankook Tire brings Laufenn home

First presented at the SEMA show in Las Vegas back in 2014 and subsequently launched in Europe and dozens of other markets, Laufenn is Hankook Tire’s second brand. After introducing Laufenn to the world, Hankook is now bringing the brand home and offering it in South Korea for the first time. By debuting Laufenn locally, the tyre maker aims to “further accelerate” its domestic market penetration with a multi-brand strategy that satisfies “the diverse tastes of consumers.”

Toyo debuts Proxes Sport 2 at Autopromotec 2022

Occupying one of Autopromotec Hall 20’s largest stands, Toyo made the second generation of its top-selling UHP summer tyre, the Proxes Sport 2 the centrepiece, alongside two recently launched products, the Proxes Comfort summer tyre and the Celsius AS2 all-season tyre. Toyo said the newest tyre marks an important evolution in terms of innovation and technology. “The new UHP summer tyre… has been designed using the most modern technologies known in the sector that have made it possible to produce a highly innovative tyre that aspires to become the technological leader in its segment,” said Dr Davide Dell’Aquila, Toyo Tire Italia.

Autopromotec makes strong return with ‘enthusiastic’ exhibitors, visitors

The biennial exhibition of automotive equipment and aftermarket products Autopromotec returned for its 29th edition between 25 and 28 May in Bologna following its Covid-induced postponement in what would have been its regular position in 2021. While the challenges to the European automotive industry continued to be evident – the show was reduced in length by one day to four days for this event, and the absence of Italy’s own Nexion Group are evidence of difference to pre-pandemic events – there was a notable buzz around the halls. Conversing primarily with tyre industry colleagues situated in Hall 20, the general feeling from exhibitors and visitors conveyed to Tyres & Accessories was that it is positive to be back at such events after a prolonged absence, though challenges remain, whether related to the emergence from the pandemic or tied to more recent developments, such as war in Ukraine.

Kordsa cooperates with SES RFID Solutions in tyre tag supply

Kordsa is cooperating with SES RFID Solutions GmbH to provide RFID tags for vehicle tyre identification and tracking. According to the company, Kordsa’s collaboration with SES RFID Solutions combines the patented SES technology with Kordsa’s materials to develop “a small, flexible RFID tag to embed in vehicle tyres before vulcanization.” The two companies announced their collaboration on 5 July.

RH Claydon opening warehouse in Carlisle

BKT supplier and family-run tyre wholesaler RH Claydon (RHC) has announced the official opening date of its new depot in Carlisle’s Kingmoor Park North enterprise zone. From Monday 1 August the site will be open for deliveries and collections between 8 am and 5:30 pm Monday and for collection 9 am to 12 pm Saturdays. This depot is the company’s eighth site and will allow a greater coverage of the north and border areas.

Stop, the revolution: Orbis Brakes presents new innovation

US start-up Orbis Brakes has launched brake technology developed in partnership with NASA which uses “advanced aerodynamics to provide superior surface cooling, reduce dangerous brake fade, and extend vehicle range and fuel efficiency.” The first product in Orbis Brakes’ Periodic Wave disc brake line will arrive in the third quarter of the year and is expected to “change the standard for price, performance, safety, and sustainability.”

35 years: Kwik Fit reaches fleet milestone

This summer sees Kwik Fit Fleet celebrating the 35th anniversary of opening its first fleet account. Following that first agreement in 1987, the Kwik Fit Fleet operation has grown year on year and now comprises a team of more than 200 people supporting over 4,000 fleet customers and 1.5 million drivers.

Michelin-led WhiteCycle consortium launches

WhiteCycle, a project coordinated by Michelin, officially got underway on 1 July with the aim of developing a circular economy for converting complex waste containing plastic textiles into high-added-value products. Co-financed by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe programme, this public/private European partnership includes 17 organisations.

Guizhou Tyre Vietnam plant officially put into operation

Guizhou Tyre Vietnam plant’s first-phase project has officially begun operation with an annual output of 1.2 million all-steel radial tyres. This equates to between 2500 and 2800 units and the products are mainly sold to the United States, Europe and other regions that have implemented anti-dumping and anti-subsidy investigations on Chinese tyres or imposed special tariffs. The tyre maker said that the first-phase project’s production and sales are still in the ramp-up stage.

Enviro given REACH, Uddevalla green lights

Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) has received approval as an intermediate for its pyrolysis oil according to EU chemicals regulation REACH, and will thus now execute the previously announced order for pyrolysis oil to the subsidiary of a leading US oil firm. The company also reports it has gained an environmental permit for the planned recycling plant in Uddevalla, Sweden.

Yongsheng Rubber fined for environmental violations

Guangrao County, Shandong Province’s environmental protection department announced recent administrative penalty information in June. Tyrepress found that tyre manufacturer Yongsheng Rubber received six fines of 1.2 million yuan (£149,560; 173,892 euros; $178,830). Meanwhile, the person in charge of the related projects was fined 300,000 yuan.

Hankook boosts European Alphatread offer with expanded plant

Hankook Tire has marketed its Alphatread range of mould cure or ‘hot’ retreaded tyres for almost a decade now, and today satisfies demand for these products from plants in the UK, Spain, Italy, France and Germany. The last of these is the former Reifen Müller facility in Hammelburg, some 60 miles east of Frankfurt am Main. Hankook recently expanded its Alphatread operation at this site by setting up a separate mould cure retreading operation, significantly increasing capacity.

Synthos’ Marchisio joins TRS board

At its annual general meeting on 29 June, Swiss firm Tyre Recycling Solutions (TRS) appointed Matteo Marchisio to its Board of Directors. Marchisio is director of the Synthetic Rubber business unit at Synthos, the chemical company that took a minority stake in TRS following its acquisition of Trinseo’s synthetic rubber business late last year.

Lee Hutchings named Michelin’s Director of Services & Solutions

Michelin has appointed Lee Hutchings as Director of Services and Solutions for the UK and Ireland. In this capacity he oversees a division that looks after some of Michelin’s biggest customers and manages the tyres on more than 80,000 commercial vehicles. Hutchings will also play a key role in the growth of the company’s “with and around tyres” concept by linking in with Michelin Connected Fleet, the recently launched Fleet management brand in the UK.

Michelin: Clarivate innovation honour “goes to all of our global teams”

Analytics firm Clarivate has published its 100 Top Innovators 2022 list, and several familiar names are present. Continental debuts as a new entrant, whilst Bridgestone and Michelin both return to the list for a fourth time. Michelin shares that it received this recognition from Clarivate during yesterday’s R&D forum at its technology centre near Clermont-Ferrand, France.
