Yokohama Rubber debuts mid-term management plan

Under its new YX2026 management plan, Yokohama Rubber intends to combat growing sales of budget consumer tyres with a strengthened focus on OE supply and also rapidly bring new and efficient plants online. Within the OHT segment, it will turn to mergers and acquisitions to bolster market share in specific areas. By fiscal 2026, the company aims for sales revenue of ¥1,150 billion (£6.1 billion), business profit of ¥130 billion (£688.9 million), a business profit margin of 11%, and ROE of more than 10%.

Pirelli extends F1 in Schools partnership to Italy

F1 in Schools is an international STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) competition for school students in which teams work together to design a miniature, compressed air-powered F1 car. The programme originated in the UK a quarter century ago and currently operates in more than 40 countries. Pirelli is a partner of the UK competition and has now announced becoming an Official Partner of F1 in Schools Italy.

SRI quadruples profit in 2023

Despite significant interest rate hikes, geopolitical tensions, inflation and economic stagnation in some regions, modest signs of global economic recovery appeared in 2023. Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) reports experiencing notable improvements in the financial year ending 31 December 2023, including a “significant reduction” in freight costs compared with the prior year as well as a “lull in the soaring raw material and energy costs,” leading to significantly improved profitability.

UNECE adopts tyre abrasion measuring methodology

On 8 January, the UNECE’s World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations endorsed a proposal outlining two methodologies for assessing tyre abrasion within the framework of UN Regulation No. 117. The proposal adopted by the Working Party on Noise and Tyres entails measuring the reduction in tyre weight caused by abrasion, with results quantified in milligrams per kilometre per tonne of load on the tyre.

High costs & bureaucratic hurdles – Michelin on Germany factory closures

Germany’s days as an industrial superpower are coming to an end, opined Bloomberg on 10 February. The media firm blames competition from the USA, the energy crisis and declining Chinese interest in German products for this development, but there are further factors to consider. Michelin, which plans to close several plants within the country, suggests that an excess of bureaucracy is contributing to Germany’s unattractiveness as a manufacturing site.

Michelin most prominent and best sentiment tyre brand in 2024

In 2005, Tyres & Accessories published the first in what would become a 12-year series of online brand prominence and sentiment analyses relating to the best-known tyre brands. That research was conducted in association with Envisional and latterly NetNames. Now, one of the brains behind the original data has developed “a new and improved methodology for quantifying brand prominence and sentiment”. Tyre recycling: Work to start on Enviro & Antin JV plant

Uddevalla Municipality in Sweden has authorised Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) to proceed with the construction of its new joint venture end-of-life tyre recycling plant. This clearance comes after Enviro, Antin Infrastructure Partners, and Michelin reached a final decision on the project’s investment on 7 February. Having secured all essential environmental and construction approvals, Enviro anticipates commencing construction in the first quarter of 2024.

L4T Group extends tyre recycling remit to USA

Ireland-based end-of-life-tyre recycling company Life for Tyres Group (L4T Group) is establishing its first processing facility in the USA. Government agency Louisiana Economic Development shares that L4T Group will set up shop at the Port of South Louisiana, investing US$46 million to build a plant on a 10-acre (4-hectare) site.

Tyremakers sued in US class action antitrust  lawsuit – public communications and high prices at centre of case

Days after the European Commission announced that it is investigating a number of leading tyre manufacturers in relation to allegations of price-fixing, the same companies have become the subject of a similar class-action lawsuit in the USA. The class action relates to “…purchases of tyres within four years prior to the filing” – which clearly relates to a potentially enormous number of tyres. The case basically alleges that the named tyremakers colluded to raise and sustain higher tyre prices and that such action was at least partly facilitated via public communications. The named tyremakers have all already denied price fixing and stated their compliance with the law and their cooperation with investigations in relation the EC investigation.

Romain Sartorius named Chairman & CEO of Mobivia

French automotive and mobility sector company Mobivia, which operates 11 brands and some 20 start-ups in several countries, has a new Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. Following its election on 27 January, the company’s Board of Directors chose Romain Sartorius to lead the firm for the next four years.

ZC Rubber building factory in Mexico

Not only is Zhongce Rubber Group Co., Ltd (ZC Rubber) setting up a new factory in Indonesia, the Hangzhou, China-headquartered tyre maker has also unveiled plans for a plant in Mexico. The company is looking to establish a manufacturing facility in Saltillo, in the state of Coahuila, with a potential size of up to 600,000 square metres. It will also build a North American warehouse centre adjacent to the factory to improve the local distribution network and optimise cost efficiency.

New Pyrum Innovations reactor already at 75%

Pyrum Innovations is working to bring two new reactors into operation at its main Dillingen plant in Germany’s Saarland, trebling the facility’s capacity. It began a second test run of the first of these, reactor 2 (TAD 2), on 30 January and reports “initial successes” towards the reactor’s commissioning.
