Richard Lyons becomes Kumho Tyre UK MD

At the start of April, Richard Lyons became executive managing director of Kumho Tyre UK. Lyons joins the company after roughly seven years with Trelleborg Wheel Systems in a variety of roles, latterly as managing director UK and Ireland. Before that, Lyons spent around 11 years with Giti where he oversaw significant growth at the company and rose to the role of managing director Europe and director – International sales and marketing, passenger car.

Key appointments aiding growth at Ascenso Tyres CE

During what it refers to as a “successful” first quarter 2023, Ascenso Tyres CE has added to its team with the appointment of Pawel Kopinski, who takes over responsibility for the business in Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia, and Olaf Sandeck, who joins the company from Mitas to expand original equipment activities. The aim of generating sales of 50 million euros within five years is “thus gaining momentum.”

Liberty Hall Capital Partners, the aerospace and defence industry-focused private equity firm that purchased Dunlop Aircraft Tyres in 2017, announced on 12 April that Susan McKenna has taken on the role of CEO whilst Shashank Dhawan becomes CFO.

Metzeler becomes Official Tyre of Isle of Man TT

The Metzeler tyre brand has entered into a long-term deal to be the sole Official Tyre of the Isle of Man TT Races from 2023 until 2027, building on a supply relationship with several leading riders in prior years that is set to continue in 2023 with John McGuinness MBE, Dean Harrison, James Hillier, Lee Johnston, Jamie Coward and David Johnson riding on Metzeler tyres.

Tyres not a commodity – Goodyear

Goodyear wishes to address the “common misconception” that drivers view tyres as a pure commodity and don’t differentiate among different types and brands. Looking at the outcome of the Ipsos Category drivers and segmentation study 2022, which took place in France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the UK, Goodyear sees that a growing number of consumers believe having the right tyres is crucial. These tyre buyers look at performance characteristics before making their choice.

Russia: 40-50% of tyres recycled

Around 40-50% of end-of-life tyres removed from vehicles in Russia are currently recycled, reports public company Russian Environmental Operator. This means that around 500 thousand tonnes of old tyres are recycled, mainly into low-grade products such as large rubber crumb and rubber chips for floor surfacing.

TyreSafe joins National Road Safety Committee

TyreSafe now sits on the National Road Safety Committee, run by the Royal Society of the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) as part of its ongoing wider strategy to increase the awareness of tyre safety. RoSPA’s National Road Safety Committee is a UK-focused network working towards a vision of zero deaths and serious injuries on our roads. It is the principal RoSPA advisory committee on matters of road safety.

2022 Tyre Industry Awards Truck and Agricultural Tyre Supplier of the Year, GB Tyres has announced the latest phase of its commercial vehicle tyre portfolio development with the introduction of its own exclusive brand, Aerotyre. The company states: “Aerotyre is more than another brand in our portfolio. It is made specifically for us and is our own tyre brand, Aerotyre products are only available from GB Tyres. TyreSafe launches spring safety campaign – ‘Do you drive and hope?’

TyreSafe has launched its spring tyre safety message, asking drivers, “Do you drive and hope?” The road safety charity wants to spread its message, supported by its ACT acronym, that drivers should check their tyres’ air pressure, condition and tread on a regular basis. Spring is a particularly good time to get this message out, with unpredictable driving conditions due to inclement weather, more heavily laden cars as families travel over the long bank holiday weekends (of which there is one more in 2023 thanks to the coronation of King Charles III), and busier roads.
