Hankook announces Q2 2022 results

During the second quarter of 2022, Hankook Tire grew its sales by 12.9 per cent year-on-year to KRW 2,039.9 billion (£1.3 billion). Operating profit, squeezed by world events, rising raw material costs and inflation, shrank 6.3 per cent year-on-year to KRW 175.2 billion (£109.9 million). This result nonetheless represented a 39.0 per cent increase compared with the operating profit of KRW 126.0 billion (£79.0 million) achieved in Q1 2022. Hankook attributes this quarter-on-quarter improvement to a growing share of sales attributable to high-value-added products as well as effective pricing strategies.

Nexen OE on 2 Series Active Tourer

BMW has selected Nexen as an original equipment fitment for its second-generation 2 Series Active Tourer. The MPV will be available with Nexen N’Fera Sport tyres in size 205/65 R16, a dimension that lower spec models wear in some markets.

‘Born for the electric age’ – Prinx debuts latest products

When Prinx Chengshan presented its flagship Prinx tyre brand at The Tire Cologne in May, talk was of its introduction in European markets later in 2022. The tyre maker also displayed a pair of Prinx tyres scheduled for launch in China ahead of the brand’s arrival here. These tyres have now hit the market in the People’s Republic and signal the brand’s repositioning as a range “born for the electric age.” Prinx Chengshan will show them off the China International Tire & Wheel Fair in Qingdao this week.

Ceat offering broad summer, all-season & winter line-up

Fighting unfair trade: South Africa’s SATMC defends tariff application

South Africa is currently contemplating anti-dumping tariffs for tyres imported from China, and an investigation is currently in its preliminary phase. A healthy head of steam has already built up on both sides of the argument, with the recent debate including a claim from the Tyre Importers Association of South Africa (TIASA) that the tariffs will simply result in Chinese imports being substituted for tyres from Europe or Japan. The South African Tyre Manufacturers Conference (SATMC) has issued a statement countering assertions such as this.

Fleets are facing tyre cost rises at an unprecedented rate, placing additional strain on already stretched SMR budgets, warns i247 Group, the outsourced driver support and asset management provider. The Poole-based company reports average tyre costs are likely to continue rising due to a rapidly-changing fleet portfolio mix and double-digit percentage cost increases from tyre manufacturers to its customer base.

Goodyear buying German wholesaler Reifen Burkhardt

Goodyear is expanding its wholesale presence in southwest Germany with the acquisition of local player Reifen Burkhardt GmbH & Co. KG. The purchase of this family-owned tyre wholesaler brings into the Goodyear fold an operation with space to store 250,000 tyres and wheels in a 40,000 square metre warehouse facility. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close in the third quarter of this year.

Michelin publishes H1 2022 results, maintains full-year guidance

In a market hit by the systemic impacts of the conflict in Ukraine and the health crisis, the Michelin Group reports that its net income fell by 18.3 per cent despite a year-on-year increase in sales. The tyre maker nevertheless considers this a good result “in an extremely unsettled environment.”

The York-based crop farming operation Wharram and Kay is getting ‘fantastic results’ from its new Bateman RB35 self-propelled crop sprayer having fitted the vehicle with Michelin AxioBib 2 tyres. 2 new Apollo EnduRace RD2 sizes

Apollo Tyres says its EnduRace RD2 has proven a great success since its launch last year. The existing size 315/80 R22.5 tyre will soon be joined by two further dimensions. As of this month, Apollo EnduRace RD2 is also available as a 315/70 R22.5 product, while a 295/80 R22.5 version will arrive next March.
