Bridgestone’s impressive grip of the off-road sector

Bridgestone claims market leadership in the mining and construction tyre sector, and with the mining sector namedropped alongside electric vehicle tyres for particular attention in its recently announced 800 billion yen ($5.38 billion) round of medium-term investment over the next three years, the global tyre manufacturing signalled its intent to continue to strengthen in this segment. Bridgestone can claim an impressive grip of the off-road tyre market in more ways than one.

A strange way of price-fixing

At the end of January, the European Commission (EC) announced that it is had begun conducting “unannounced inspections” – commonly known as dawn raids – at the European offices of the world’s leading tyremakers. The investigation intends to find out whether or not “the inspected companies may have violated EU antitrust rules that prohibit cartels and restrictive business practices”. In the days immediately after that news broke, it quickly became apparent that (in alphabetical order) Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear, Michelin, Nokian and Pirelli all received those visits. All the above companies issued statements denying the allegations and confirming that they are cooperation with the authorities. The EC’s announcement was short on detail and the investigated tyremakers are being understandably tight-lipped about the whole thing, which leaves significant questions about what the grounds for such an investigation were in the first place.

Pirelli financial performance the strongest of European premium tyre brands – analysts

Initiating detailed coverage of European tyre manufacturers, analysts at Jefferies Equities Research fated Pirelli as their top pick, followed by Continental and Michelin. “Continental is trading on the largest discount to Michelin in years and the ex-tyres business is at the lowest multiple (2x EBIT) in three years. Pirelli is at a two per cent discount to Michelin versus a premium for >90 per cent of the last three years.

Arclid Transport renews Prometeon contract

Cheshire-based Arclid Transport has renewed its tyre supply and fitting agreement with Prometeon Tyre Group, a fixed pence per kilometre (PPK) contract that covers the entire 95-strong Arclid fleet of 45 trucks and 60 trailers, predominantly made up of 6×2 artics and tri-axle trailers.

ReOil pyrolysis process the template for Grimsby plant

North East Lincolnshire Council has approved plans for a pyrolysis plant for processing end-of-life tyres in Grimsby. The facility proposed by Fluid Ice FO Ltd has the capacity to process nearly 25,000 tonnes of waste tyres annually. Fluid Ice claims that the plant will use a pyrolysis process “based on the plant” operated by ReOil in Jazworno, Poland, which produces saleable fuel oil, carbon black and steel as well as pyrolysis gas.

Yokohama Rubber partners with Haupt Racing Team

The Yokohama Rubber Co., Ltd., has entered into a partnership agreement with Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing’s Haupt Racing Team (HRT), under which it will supply Yokohama Advan racing tyres to the Mercedes-AMG GT3 that HRT enters into the Nürburgring 24-Hour Race and Nürburgring Langstrecken Serie (NLS). In dry conditions, the car will wear Advan A005 racing tyres in 300/680R18 (front) and 330/710R18 (rear), and in the wet will compete on Advan A006 tyres.

Volvo truck dealer halves vehicle downtime with AES UK

Thomas Hardie Commercials Ltd is the main distributor for Volvo Truck, Bus & Coach in the North-West of England, North Wales and Lancashire. Peter Smith passes away aged 74

Peter Smith, former joint managing director of historic tyre distributor BMTR, has passed away suddenly at the age of 74. Along with his brother Paul, Peter was part of the third generation of the Smith family to run the business founded by their Grandfather Jack Smith in 1919.

Following the news that the company will be producing certain Avon-branded motorsport tyres, Nova Motorsport has announced “its acquisition of leading tyre producer, Camac”. No details relating to the terms of acquisition have been released.

Tyre mould maker EMT now a Continental operation

Continental has acquired EMT s.r.o., a mould manufacturing specialist based in Puchov, Slovakia. The tyre maker and automotive technology company obtained all shares in its long-standing supplier on 2 April 2024 after entering into an agreement with EMT’s shareholders, including majority shareholder Dynamic Design Europe. Beyond confirming the retention of all 107 EMT employees, Continental has not disclosed details of the agreement.

Apollo Tyres is expanding its EnduRace RD2 truck and bus tyre range with the launch of a new 295/80 R22.5 size option. Available across Europe from this month, this latest addition to Apollo Tyres’ Regional Drive tyre portfolio complements the 315/70 and 315/80 variants of the second-generation EnduRace RD2 line-up.

TRA: UK the ‘environmental sick man of Europe’ if government doesn’t act
