Tyre manufacturers expanding in a down market

June and July saw a spate of factory investment and opening announcements. First there’s the news that Linglong manufactured its first tyre at its brand-new Serbia tyre production plant at the end of June. Of course, this project has been underway for some time, but the fact that it got going just before the end of the first half of 2022 is noteworthy for two reasons. Firstly, notwithstanding the inhibiting effect of general market headwinds associated with pandemic fall-out and war in Ukraine, the project is basically on-schedule. And secondly, it demonstrates that no enthusiasm for Western and specifically European tyre production has been lost since the nullification of European import tariffs against Chinese-produced truck tyres roughly a month ago.

‘Stronger together’ – tyre and aftermarket sector gathers for 2022 Tyre Industry Conference

The Tyre Industry Conference 2022 has opened at The Vox Conference Centre, Birmingham. The National Tyre Distributors Association’s annual event, sponsored this year by wholesaler GB Tyres and Indian tyre brand JK Tyre, is presenting tyre business delegates with a stimulating programme of presentations tackling the biggest questions facing different sectors of the distribution chain; from the newest innovations in tyres for electric vehicles to the key issues affecting tyre recovery and recycling. Stefan Hay, NTDA chief executive, set the tone of the event with his opening address, calling for a collaborative effort from the industry to tackle pressing issues, such as the skills shortage and efforts to decarbonise and promote the circular economy. Meanwhile, Simon Wright used his first conference address as NTDA national chairman to pay tribute to his predecessor Martin O’Brien as “a master of the round and black,” and to celebrate the association’s success in promoting tyre technician training and accreditation, with “around 2000 commercial tyre technicians” going through its newest scheme.

EU-27 plus UK tyre imports rise 11% as winners and losers emerge from turbulent market

Since March, cumulative passenger car and light truck tyre imports to the European Union and UK have, for the first time, recovered to run above pre-pandemic levels. This is despite the well-documented impact of sharply higher ocean freight costs in this period, and disruption to production in some source countries. A newly published report by Astutus Research, “European PCLT Tire Demand and Supply Forecasts to 2026”, shows that in the first seven months of 2022, European (the EU-27 plus UK)* imports from outside the region were 11% higher than the same period last year and 5% higher than the equivalent pre-Covid period in 2019.

First Stop breaks the 150-branch barrier

First Stop’s UK tyre and autocare retail operation recently broke through the 150-branch barrier. The leap to 150 tyre centres marks a significant milestone for any tyre business, but read in light of our annual tyre retail ranking, two key facts are immediately apparent: Firstly, First Stop has added something like 26 branches to the network since the last count at the end of April 2022 (which itself followed a 65-branch increase on the 2021 total). And secondly, reaching the 150 mark means that – as things stand – First Stop is now the fifth largest tyre retail operation in the UK. First Stop’s UK management set the goat or reaching 220 branches in four years back in 2019. Reaching 150 branches in three despite the challenging circumstances that have come along with the pandemic, is all the more remarkable.

Europe PCLT Tire Market Supply & Demand Forecasts to 2028

Latest update: April 2023

Whilst demand for new cars in Europe picked up significantly in 2021 and 2022, recovery in vehicle production and the original equipment tire market was held back by major shortages of components, specifically semiconductors. Supply chain disruption was compounded by the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This has delayed the recovery in the OE tire market, and whilst the impact of supply shortages is now lessening, vehicle demand in the region is expected to be affected by the tougher economic environment.

After sharp declines in 2020, the European PCLT replacement tire market made a strong recovery in 2021 as vehicle kilometres travelled increased. The recovery slowed in 2022 and into 2023, however, as increased fuel costs put pressure on growth road traffic and now household budgets and spending are being squeezed across the region.

Meanwhile the supply of tires across Europe continues to evolve. Sanctions imposed against Russia have ended imports into Western and Central Europe from the second half of 2022. Nokian was clearly the most affected, and it is in the process of securing alternative capacity, including building a new plant in Romania. Pirelli has also adjusted its production, shifting some sourcing to Romania and Turkey. Elsewhere, Toyo and Linglong have both started production at their new plants in Serbia and Sentury Tire of China has proposed building a plant in Spain.

Global Replacement PCLT Tire Market Forecasts to 2028

Latest update: April 2023

After a major decline in 2020, the global PCLT replacement tire market started to make a strong recovery in 2021 as vehicle kilometres travelled increased. Sharply higher fuel costs in 2022 slowed the recovery in road traffic in key markets such as Europe and the US. Higher inflation is now impacting household budgets and spending in 2023. In the Asia Pacific region, Covid-related disruption continued in 2022, most notably in the region’s biggest market, China. Although the strict lock-down policy has been abandoned, consumers have not yet fully returned to their previous habits. Nevertheless, the value of the global market has risen sharply as tire manufacturers have passed on significantly higher raw material costs, with high rim diameter tires taking a larger share of the market.
