First look: Linglong Tire’s Serbia tyre factory

The opening of its new tyre factory in Zrenjanin, Serbia, makes Linglong Tire the first Chinese tyre manufacturer to build a production base in Europe. Truck tyre production represents the first phase of the enormous overall 999-million-euro project that represents the largest single foreign investment in Serbia and will soon feature car tyre production followed by the manufacture of agricultural and OTR tyres. Ahead of its official opening, as well as an interview with Linglong Tire chairman, Wang Feng, Tyres & Accessories had an exclusive tour of the site including a close-up view of the truck tyre production line.

First tyre rolls off Jiangsu General Cambodian factory production line

On 18 March Jiangsu General’s Cambodian factory produced its first tyre, which means the tyre maker’s second overseas factory is now ramping up its production capacity. Jiangsu General said that the products of the Cambodian plant are mainly produced under the Celimo brand and are sold in the United States, Europe and Brazil.

ZC subsidiary invests in waste tyre treatment project

On 10 March, Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province’s environmental protection department accepted the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) document of Zhongce Qingquan’s waste tyre treatment project. After completing this project, the subsidiary of ZC Rubber will be able to process 20,000 tons of waste tyres (crumb rubber) per year.

Falken e.Ziex debuts in Europe

It’s more than a year since Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) first announced an upcoming electric vehicle tyre for Europe. Visitors to The Tire Cologne gained a sneak preview of Falken e.Ziex last May, and a further sign of the tyre’s impending arrival came earlier this month with a strong tyre test result. SRI now confirms it is launching Falken e.Ziex as a “new line of replacement tyres for electric vehicles in Europe, where the market for EV has been growing at a rapid pace.”

Minister calls for “swift end” to T8 Exemptions

After lobbying regulators to do more to prevent rogue operators using T8 exemptions as a cover for the illegitimate handling of Britain’s end-of-life tyres, the Tyre Recovery Association (TRA) has welcomed DEFRA’s February announcement suggesting the government department would act to end the current exemptions regime.

Continental’s SportContact 7, WhatTyre Tyre of the Year 2022, added to its impressive tally of test victories as it was named the “outstanding” tyre in the Sportauto summer tyre test 2023. Elsewhere there was a very notable showing for the “very good” Firestone Firehawk Sport, one of only two tyres to record above-average ratings in all three disciplines rated in Sportauto’s final analysis – wet, dry and environmental. The tyre infiltrated the group of five premium brands in the top half of the rankings, beating its Bridgestone stablemate, the Potenza Sport, and the Pirelli P Zero PZ4. The magazine tested eleven tyres in size 225/40 R18 92Y XL mounted on an Audi S3.

Prinx Chengshan: Intelligent manufacturing the basis of future success

China-based tyre manufacturer Prinx Chengshan is in the process of expanding in the wider Asia-Pacific area, having revamped its four major brands Prinx, Chengshan, Austone and Fortune for 2023.

That revamp was achieved by “relying on the company’s national-level enterprise technology innovation centre and new energy collaborative research centre”, Prinx Chengshan reports, adding that it has “vigorously conducted cutting-edge tyre technology research, created an international standard new product matrix, and achieved fruitful results.”

First MOT date extension to increase tyre-related road safety risk

The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), which represents more than 90,000 automotive professionals, has conducted in-depth analysis of MOT data to formulate what it calls a “considered and balanced response” to the Department for Transport’s MOT Consultation. Working with Garage Industry Trends to examine root causes in current patterns of MOT failure, the IMI analysis provides clear evidence that extending the date for the first MOT will significantly increase road user risk.

Apollo seeking European TBR tyre market share boost with new products, increased production

Apollo Tyres wants to build its European market share alongside the development of the commercial vehicle tyre production line at its advanced Hungarian plant. Hosting Tyres & Accessories in the final quarter of 2022, the growing manufacturer detailed its strategic five-year plan to build its presence in Europe’s truck and bus, radial (TBR) tyre market alongside the launch of its EnduMile LHT, a long haul trailer tyre targeting the continent, its first to feature A-grade fuel efficiency on the European tyre label. Apollo is taking measures to double its TBR tyre production output from the Gyöngyöshalász facility, with the target of covering up to 90 per cent of the TBR segment’s total size and specification requirements by 2025.

SK Incheon Petrochem partnering LD Carbon tyre-derived oil project

SK Incheon Petrochem, a petrochemical wing of South Korean conglomerate SK Group’s intermediate holding company SK Innovation, has made an equity investment into LD Carbon, uses pyrolysis to extract oil from end-of-life tyres. The news confirms earlier reports that LD Carbon was being backed a South Korean petrochemical firm.

Giti relocates Hefei tyre factory

On 6 March, the authorities of Hefei City, Anhui Province, released reported that they they had reached a consensus with Giti headquarters on relocating the Hefei factory. The chairman of Giti Tire will go to Hefei soon to inspect the address of the new factory.

Is Continental about to launch the AllSeasonContact 2?

At the end of last year, it emerged that Continental is planning to introduce a new car tyre this year. Because both Continental’s WinterContact TS 870 and WinterContact TS 870 P are young in terms of product cycle, and because the SportContact 7 and PremiumContact 7 are also new on the block, the new tyre is likely to be a successor to the AllSeasonContact. And our eagle-eyed German colleagues have once again found evidence that supports this theory.
