Another new car tyre factory in Egypt?

On 29 March, the Arab Organization for Industrialization strengthened its international partnership with “major Chinese companies”. Major General, Engineer Mokhtar Abdel Latif, Chairman of the Arab Organization for Industrialization, said followed President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi directive to “strengthen partnerships with international expertise, increase local manufacturing rates, localize modern technology, increase added value, and open new areas for investment, in light of Egypt’s vision of sustainable development 2030.”

Black Star launches “Leonard” range of retreads made in Bethune

Black Star, the car tyre retreading operation owned that took over the ex-Bridgestone Bethune new tyre factory, has launched its new range of retreaded car tyres called “Leonard”. Blackstar is run by iWip, the Mobivia subsidiary dedicated to the circular economy. Mobivia also owns the ATU autocentre chain in Germany as well as the Norauto garage business in France amongst other enterprises.

Goodyear launching 2023 Drive Results tour

Russia: Chinese, Korean tyre brands sanctions winners

While tyre retail sales volumes in Russia reportedly declined 16% year-on-year in Q1 2023, to 3.2 million units, sales value dropped 42%. The growing popularity of lower-priced tyres partially explains this larger decrease in turnover, and imports from China and Korea rose significantly. An expert from one association nonetheless still recommends European tyres, even though they’re hard to find and expensive.

Dunlop’s brand value shrank three-times faster than Sailun Tire’s grew

While Michelin was found to the be most valuable tyre brand, as we previewed a month ago, the 2023 Brand Finance data also shows Michelin is the strongest brand with a Brand Strength Index score of 88.1 out of 100 and a corresponding AAA rating. However, there were also significant shifts between 10th and 15th place in the ranking of the world’s leading tyre brands. Specifically, Sailun leapfrogged Linglong into 11th place in the “most valuable” category. And MRF rose two places from 15th to 13th this year. Meanwhile, Dunlop’s brand value shrank three-times faster than Sailun Tire’s grew.

ELTs: Pyrum both upstream & downstream of Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz will soon use waste tyres removed from its vehicles in the production of new cars. German pyrolysis recycling specialist Pyrum Innovations has taken the “next step” in its cooperation with the vehicle manufacturer and anticipates recycling several hundred tonnes of used tyres from the Mercedes-Benz Used Parts Centre every year. Pyrolysis oil made from these tyres will be used in the manufacture of vehicle components.

Prinx Chengshan suspends Anhui project, looks to Europe

Recently, Prinx Chengshan revealed in its 2022 annual report that it has decided to suspend its Anhui tyre factory project. The tyre maker said that the suspension of investment was due to the domestic and foreign economic situation and the company’s forecast analysis of capacity utilisation. According to the original plan of Prinx Chengshan, the Anhui factory is its second tyre factory in China.

Norfolk-based Roger Warnes Transport and Prometeon Tyre Group have renewed their partnership for a further three years, continuing the long-standing relationship between the organisations. The deal covers the entire 222‐strong Roger Warnes Transport fleet – consisting of 108 trucks and 114 trailers – on a fixed pence per kilometre (PPK) contract.

Tyrefair integrates Fitter-Force, e-jobsheet

Kinross independent garage Tyrefair is integrating CAM’s Fitter-Force into its business. The platform will allow the business to introduce connectivity options with the four major tyre manufacturers participating on the network and to digitise its operations principally through its adoption of e-jobsheet. The company will also use the software to manage its busy retail operation.

WEC: Will Stevens first winner of Goodyear Wingfoot award

Will Stevens is the inaugural winner of the Goodyear Wingfoot award, an accolade the tyre maker introduced to “recognise sustained performance and endurance” in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). Goodyear is the exclusive tyre partner to the intensely competitive LMP2 category, and all drivers from the class are eligible for the award.
