China’s biggest tyre maker wants to grow even larger and expand its manufacturing footprint to Europe and North America, producing tyres that approach the premium market. To finance these ambitious plans, ZC Rubber will debut on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in the not-too-distant future.
Norwegian tyre recycler Wastefront is cooperating with energy storage infrastructure provider VTTI in a partnership that will bring with it investment of up to $43 million and an agreement to reach a final investment decision for eight global sites within a five-year period.
One of the key messages the Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. announced at its recent Nurburgring event was that they tyremaker is applying a new “E+” mark to its passenger cars, from the second half of 2023. An official announcement from Yokohama Rubber’s Japanese headquarters has since confirmed that the same marking will also be applied to trucks and buses equipped with the same properties required by electrified vehicles. That 12 July official statement specifies that the term “Electrified vehicles” includes battery electric vehicles (BEVs), electric vehicles (EVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), and fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). In other words, the new E+ marking is Yokohama’s bid to bring clarity to exactly what an electric vehicle (EV) tyre is.
Protyre’s Liam Healy and Hometyre’s Craig Schwartz were crowned TPMS Experts in the large and small retailer categories respectively, while Lewis Marshall from Formula One Autocentres prevailed in the under-23s category of Autogem’s second competition to find the country’s leading tyre pressure monitoring system technicians and raise standards and awareness within the industry. The finalists were praised for detecting various TPMS faults in a quick and efficient manner and communicating them clearly thereafter. Following a successful first outing, Autogem expanded the competition with its third award, focused on young and emerging talent.
Giti Tire has appointed Lars Ohnsorge as senior manager automotive engineering Europe OE. The company said the appointment of the experienced tyre professional would further strengthen its original equipment operations, following the recruitment of Nicolas Kluson as key account manager Europe OE in April, with both providing in-depth technical support and direction from the company’s European R&D Center in Hannover, Germany. Giti said its new OE team will immediately focus on the manufacturer’s existing OE relationships with BMW Group, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), VW Group (Audi, Seat, Skoda, VW) and VW Commercial Vehicles as well as introduce the Giti brand and business philosophy to other key vehicle manufacturers.
The entire Conti Urban bus tyre range is now kitted out with the latest generation of sensors from Continental. From August 2023, Conti Urban HA3, Conti UrbanScandinavia HA3+ and Conti UrbanScandinavia HD3 smart tyres will be available to purchase, making Continental the first manufacturer to offer an entire family of tyres with sensors.

The Apollo EnduRace RT2 truck trailer tyre range is growing with the introduction of a new 385/55 size option for 22.5-inch rims later this month. Apollo Tyres developed the EnduRace RT2 for Europe and manufactures it here too; the tyre maker says the range “delivers superior standards of all-weather performance, rolling resistance, and enhanced mileage and durability.” It adds that the tyre “remains a highly cost-effective solution in an intensely competitive segment” despite premium performance.

The Tyre Industry Federation says that more than 300 brands sourced from more than 45 countries are on sale in the UK alone, the majority of them targeting van operators for whom a low purchase price is a key consideration. T&A also spoke to several representatives from the brand’s European team, including the manufacturer’s European CEO Thomas Wohlgemuth who is heading up the rollout of the brand around the continent, about its new products and aspiration to make its mark on the European tyre segment.
Greenergy International Ltd. has submitted a planning application for two renewable fuel plants in Teesside, including a facility that utilises the company’s Green Tyre Technology (GTT) to produce recovered carbon black and low-carbon road and marine transport fuels from end-of-life tyres. The other facility will see Greenergy enter the Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) market, creating SAF from waste oils.
Kal Tire’s Mining Tire Group reports that its mining tyre recycling plant in Chile has gained International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS certification, verifying it meets the circular materials standards for reclaimed oil, carbon black and syngas using a mass balance chain of custody approach. It thus becomes one of just a handful of mining tyre recycling facilities in the world to generate outputs that are 100 per cent ISCC PLUS compliant.

Goodyear’s recent Sustainable Reality Survey has shown that UK fleets are more focused on sustainability than their European counterparts, with higher-than-average knowledge and application of sustainable solutions, including fuel-efficient tyres. Goodyear surveyed more than 1,400 fleets from 33 countries, asking about their current efforts and targets for the future. It found that 93 per cent of UK fleets are committed to sustainability goals, compared to the European average of 83 per cent. The UK industry is also in a position of strength when it comes to investing in sustainable solutions, including fuel-efficient tyres, telematics and driver training.
