ETB fined £100,000 for breaking tyre disposal rules

In July, Exhaust Tyres and Batteries (Worcester) Limited (otherwise known as the Bridgestone-owned ETB tyre retail operation) exceeded the amount of waste the company were legally allowed to deposit at Synergy Tyres Limited, Daventry in total depositing around 250,000 of waste tyres. As a result, ETB was fined £100,000 and ordered to pay costs of £7,463.

Ceat appoints new R&D head as focus shifts to European car tyre introduction

Ceat recently appointed Renji Issac, Senior Vice President R&D and Technology in India. Issac took over from Peter Becker, Senior Vice President R&D and Technology effective 1 May. Becker was globally responsible for quality tyre development and implementation in Europe from July 2017 to 30 April 2023.

Renewed ISCC certification for Enviro oil & carbon black

Oil and carbon black that Scandinavian Enviro Systems (Enviro) recovers from end-of-life vehicle tyres in its plant in Åsensbruk, Sweden have received new certification in accordance with the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) scheme. This is the second time that the recovered carbon black and oil from the facility have gained ISCC certification – initial certification for recovered carbon black in September 2021 delivered Enviro a world first.

Bridgestone Blizzak LM 005 continues winter tyre test dominance, but others better on snow

German consumer automotive magazine Auto Motor und Sport (AMS) has published the first winter tyre test of the season, pitting seven high-performance 20-inch profiles against each other. The clear overall winner was the reigning WhatTyre Winter Tyre of the Year, Bridgestone’s Blizzak LM 005, yet the tyre benefitted from the magazine’s decision to reduce the share of snow performance in the overall score to 20 per cent; the tyre was rated lower than all but one of the other six competitors in the test. The Stuttgart-based testers fitted 255/45 R20 105V XL tyres on both conventional and electric Kias.

Goodyear restructures EMEA: 1200 jobs cut, 500 created

Goodyear is significantly restructuring its Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) operations in measures that will result in 1200 job cuts across the salaried workforce, the creation of 500 new positions and therefore a net job reduction of 15%. Tyres & Accessories understands that the “business transformation programme” centres on Goodyear EMEA’s salaried workforce. Furthermore, it does not impact the company’s manufacturing workforce, which has been addressed separately.

Hubtrac truck tyre brand positioning itself at the heart of Europe

On 1 August 2023, the Hubtrac tyre brand relocated its European operational headquarters and production facilities to Serbia. Strategic departments were inaugurated in the UK and Germany, marking the completion of a Europe-centric operational structure. The goal? The establishment of an undeniably European tyre brand alongside the already-established product R&D centre in Germany. According to the company, “this strategic shift heralds the dawn of a new era.” Tyres & Accessories met with the director of the Hubtrac brand and marketing department, Edward Xu, in order to learn more.

TRS & LD Carbon sign MoU for tyre recycling plant

Korean waste treatment and raw material recycling company LD Carbon and Switzerland’s Tyre Recycling Solutions (TRS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to set up a facility in South Korea. This plant will process end-of-life tyres (ELTs) into TyreXol rubber powders using the TRS Water Pulse process. LD Carbon will utilise ELTs not processed into TyreXol to produce tyre pyrolysis oil and recovered carbon black products whose quality has already passed various global tyre manufacturers’ assurance tests for commercial adoptions.

Shandong relaxes restrictions on new high-end tyre projects

On 17 August 2023, several government departments in Shandong Province, China jointly issued a notice relaxing regulations for establishing high-end tyre projects. A more detailed explanation is that some new tyre manufacturing projects will no longer need to eliminate the original production lines with the same energy consumption.

The British Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to the UAE, Gareth Johnson MP, accompanied by UK Ambassador to the UAE, Edward Hobart recently visited Ras Al Khaimah Economic Zone (RAKEZ). The delegation discussed trade relations between the UK and the emirate of Ras Al Khaimah and explored avenues for future cooperation and potential support for British companies looking to expand in the region.

VW ID. Buzz gives Giti Tire first European electric vehicle OE fitment  

The award-winning VW ID. Buzz will roll off production lines on the GitiSynergyH2, as tyre manufacturer Giti Tire secures its first European electric vehicle (EV) original equipment homologation. The ID. Buzz will fit 235/60 R18 (front) and 255/55 R18 (rear) tyres, and is being produced in Hannover, Germany near Giti Tire’s European Research & Development Centre, where the tyre was designed. The ID. Buzz was recently named Overall Winner and Best Large Electric Car at the What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2023. The tyre has won previous original equipment contracts for Volkswagen Group combustion-engine powered vehicles.

The 18th CITExpo officially opens in Shanghai

On 4 September the 18th China International Tire Expo (CITExpo) officially opened in Shanghai. Tyrepress China was present and found that many well-known tyre companies, including ZC Rubber, Sailun, Prinx Chengshan, Guizhou Tyre, Doublestar, and Jiangsu General have all made appearances at this exhibition and brought their flagship products.
