How tyre companies are navigating Trump’s trade war

As the global business landscape shifts under the weight of geopolitical tensions and economic recalibrations, recent developments at Pirelli are emblematic of how the context is forcing tyre businesses to be strategically agile.

On 27 March 2025, Pirelli CEO Andrea Casaluci addressed the press following an already-postponed board meeting, signalling ongoing negotiations with its largest shareholder, China’s state-owned Sinochem, which holds a 37 per cent stake. The messaging was clear: Pirelli must adapt to new realities, particularly in the US market, where President Donald Trump’s escalating trade war threatens to put the economic brakes on companies with significant Chinese ties. Here I examine how Pirelli’s predicament reflects broader challenges for multinational firms, intertwining Trump’s tariffs, parallel Italian governance, and economic headwinds in the UK, while spotlighting opportunities for agile businesses.

In other words, the various indicators of tyre companies in the second half of 2024 declined compared with the growth rate in the first half of the year. In this regard, Shen Jinrong attributed the reasons to the following four aspects:

How the electrification of SUVs is being reflected in the tyre market

In recent years, the SUV tyre market has evolved significantly, reflecting growing consumer demand for versatility, performance, and sustainability across diverse driving conditions. Professionals in the automotive and tyre industries can’t miss the surge in popularity of all-season and all-terrain tyres, such as the highly praised Michelin CrossClimate 2 (which was, of course, WhatTyre’s all-season SUV Tyre of the Year 2023). Larger tyre sizes, like 19-inch variants, are also trending, offering improved handling and stability, while the rise of electric SUVs has fuelled demand for low-rolling-resistance tyres—often paired with noise-reducing technologies—to maximize battery range and enhance cabin comfort. Staying competitive in this dynamic market requires a keen understanding of these intersecting trends, which is why the April edition of Tyres & Accessories pays particular attention to the SUV tyre segment.

Double today’s footprint: Hoosier expands into EMEA motorsport tyre markets

For many, the justification for investment into motorsports is the potential race-track-to-the-road transmission of both technology to consumer car tyres as well as overall brand awareness. Not so with Hoosier, which became part of the Continental Group back in 2016.  For Hoosier, the brand’s single-minded focus on motorsports irrespective of the fact that they have no pure road going tyres is a strength. As company executives put it, Hoosier is the only brand that is all-in on motorsports. As a result, the emphasis is on making the best-performing motorsport tyres as well as focusing on the motorsports tyres customers themselves. Nevertheless, to communicate such messages across continents and even around the globe with a series like FIA WRX, which Hoosier became exclusive official tyre supplier to in 2023, requires marketing and raising brand awareness. With that in mind, as well as Hoosier’s stated aim of expanding into the EMEA region, Tyres & Accessories spoke with executives including Joerg Burfien, president and CEO of Hoosier Tire and Martin Heckers, head of Hoosier Europe.
