Rally Japan to close ‘spectacular’ World Rally Championship 2023 season – Pirelli

Tyre supplier Pirelli is expecting a “heartfelt and hard-fought race” as well as an interesting event “from a technical point of view” at the eighth edition of Rally Japan (16-19 November), which ends the World Rally Championship season. Pirelli will supply the P Zero Hard as the prime tyre, with the P Zero Soft and Cinturato Wet also available to teams.

Pirelli expands Bari Digital Solutions centre

A years after opening Pirelli’s Digital Solutions Center in Bari is celebrating its first year of activity increasing its workforce to 80, up from the planned headcount of 50. Currently, Pirelli’s digital centre, which is run as a public-private-academic partnership totals 30 employees, mainly from the Apulia region. So far, Pirelli has invested about 4.5 million of the 9 million euros originally earmarked for the project up to 2024, part of which will be financed by the Apulia region.

Mongrip and Keep Fighting Foundation make bracelet from Schumacher F1 tyre

Roughly four years after Mongrip made jewellery out of some of late F1 star Ayrton Senna’s tyres, the company has partnered with the Keep Fighting Foundation to make a new collection of limited edition bracelets made from some of Michael Schumacher’s F1 tyres. Specifically, the bracelets are being made out of legendary 1996 Monza GP tyres in a bid to pay homage to “the extraordinary seven-time Formula 1 World Champion.”

Goodyear EMEA: Transforming the organisation, optimising manufacturing and focusing the brand portfolio

Repeated loss-making quarterly results paired with global cost-cutting and headcount-reduction efforts throughout 2023 mean Goodyear has, understandably, received more attention than usual. Most of this has come from our own research, in response to third-party action – such as Elliott’s now-infamous letter – and off the back of the aforementioned financial results. Since all of the above reasons for writing about Goodyear particularly impact Europe, in mid-October Tyres & Accessories visited the Goodyear EMEA headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, to hear more about exactly how executives are leading the business through its current tumultuous times. The group of executives Tyres & Accessories met with specifically included David Anckaert, Goodyear EMEA vice-president, consumer; and Troy Scully, vice president, communications and public affairs EMEA. Not only does such an opportunity give Goodyear the right-to-reply, it also provides additional insights into the company’s current “transformation” plans. Indeed, that is where our discussion began, with David Anckaert explaining what is meant by transformation in EMEA.

Bridgestone debuts algorithm-based mining solution

Bridgestone Corporation has introduced a new mining solution service that uses a proprietary, Bridgestone-developed algorithm to estimate tyre durability. It first introduced this offering in July 2023 to the BHP Group’s Spence copper mine (Pampa Norte operation) in Chile, which also uses the service to propose the optimal timing for tyre timing as well as driving routes for the mine.

Anlas debuts new products at EICMA

Several new Anlas tyres have arrived and are currently enjoying their public debut at the EICMA show in Milan. These are the Anlas Capra RD 2 and Tournée 2. The new arrivals share stand space with the 2022-launched Anlas Capra XR and numerous other products.

Black Donuts – Europe a ‘unique opportunity’ for Chinese tyre makers

rCB – Bridgestone & Michelin share progress in white paper

Following on from their call to action at the 2021 Smithers rCB conference, Bridgestone Corporation and Michelin Group have updated progress on their goal of increasing recovered carbon black (rCB) utilisation in tyre production. A joint technical white paper, titled Bridgestone & Michelin: Recovered Carbon Black Guidelines, shares the results of their work with other stakeholders to develop a global standard to this end.

Pyrum Innovations gears up for capacity boost at main site

Capacity at Pyrum Innovations AG’s main plant in Dillingen/Saar, Germany will soon increase following the successful warm commissioning of the site’s two new pyrolysis reactors. With licensing authorities having given the green light for production to start, Pyrum will soon begin recovering oil from end-of-life tyres within Reactors 2 & 3.

Korean firms launch ELT consortium

The inaugural meeting of the Tire-to-Tire Circular Economy Model consortium took place at Hankook Tire & Technology’s Technodome facility in Daejeon, South Korea on 1 November. The Hankook Tire-initiated consortium aims to create a sustainable business model for end-of-life tyres in Korea by “designing innovative upcycling processes” for turning them into new tyres.

Toyo agrees sustainable raw materials research partnership with Serbian university

Toyo Tire Holdings of Europe has formed an industry-university partnership for the research and development of sustainable raw materials with the University of Novi Sad in Serbia. Toyo Tire corporate officer Kenta Kuribayashi and University of Novi Sad faculty dean Biljana Pajin signed the agreement on 3 November in Serbia’s second-largest city. Toyo Tire produces tyres in Serbia. The Japanese manufacturer said that it intends to promote technology development through this industry-university partnership and wishes to contribute to educational policies in Serbia.

ReOil contracts Zeppelin Systems for major expansion

Polish end-of-life-tyre (ELT) recycler ReOil is increasing its pyrolysis activities in Bukowno and has contracted Zeppelin Systems to build a second plant there. Construction is scheduled to start in February 2024 and when completed the new plant will treble plant capacity at the 11-hectare (27-acre) site to around 60,000 tonnes of ELTs annually. Zeppelin Systems intends to provide solutions it can later offer as part of license arrangements.

Hankook Tyre UK team celebrate NTDA Tyre Industry award double

The National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) held its annual conference along with dinner and tyre industry awards on 19 October at the Hilton Double Tree, Stadium MK, Milton Keynes. Around 640 guests witnessed the event as well as presenters English actor, comedian and impressionist Jon Culshaw, NTDA chief executive Stefan Hay and national chairman Simon Wright.
