Following the inauguration of its Serbia plant, Linglong switching truck tyre production to Europe

Linglong Tire is relocating the production of truck tyres for the European market to its newly inaugurated factory in Serbia from their previous production base in China and Thailand, Tyrepress sister website Reifenpresse reports. According to the Chinese manufacturer, the Serbia plant is “one of the most modern tyre factories in the world.” With four new tyre series and a total of 47 new products or product sizes, the product range includes truck tyres for all purposes, all of which were “developed specifically for the European market.” Serbian president Aleksandar Vučić told Chinese media that Linglong could become the country’s “fifth or sixth-largest exporter” thanks to the new plant.

Goodride Solmax 1 performs in 2024 ADAC test

In this year’s summer tyre test, German automobile club ADAC took a close look at 16 current 215/55 R17 models – including the Goodride Solmax 1 for the first time. The ZC Rubber-produced summer tyre scored well in several criteria. Indeed, in the overall ranking, Goodride Solmax 1 beats at least one European brand.

Spring 2024 debut for UUHP segment Vredestein Ultrac Pro

Apollo Tyres has officially launched its new Vredestein Ultrac Pro ultra-ultra-high-performance (UUHP) tyre. Available in 18- to 24-inch rim diameters, the tyre caters to a wide range of high-performance vehicles. As evidence of the Ultrac Pro’s performance credentials the tyre maker points to independent testing conducted by Applus+ IDIADA, and aesthetics come courtesy of Apollo Tyres’ collaboration with Italdesign, a partnership that celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

Bridgestone’s full-service tyre and fleet management proposition for van fleets

Van fleets are also exploring more ways to balance the books against a challenging economic backdrop, and Bridgestone offers one of its “most advanced tyre products,” which it says could help them save thousands of pounds per year. The Bridgestone Duravis Van tyre simultaneously offers downtime minimisation and a contribution to a lower cost of ownership for the vehicle. 2022 tests carried out by independent testing organisation TÜV SÜD show that the Duravis Van offered best-in-class mileage versus its premium brand competitors for extended tyre life as well as best-in-class dry and wet braking performances. It also achieves the highest EU label rating for wet grip, helping to keep drivers safe on the road, even in challenging wet-weather conditions.

Thailand now supplies more than a quarter of European truck tyre imports – Astutus Research

The rapid growth of a manufacturing base largely across Asia has seen a swift evolution in the source of truck tyre imports in the European Union and UK. A new analysis conducted by leading tyre market analyst Astutus Research for Tyres & Accessories shows that Thailand has soared into a leading position in this segment, accounting for 26.3 per cent of truck tyre imports in 2023. Turkey (20.6 per cent) and more recently Vietnam (15.0 per cent) have also overtaken the previously dominant China (14.5 per cent) as leading sources of truck tyres in Europe (defined as the EU27 plus UK).

Continental is extending the reach of its digital tyre management system with the latest version of its ContiConnect Lite app. Integrating tyres into the vehicle network via sensor technology and data transfer, the tyre manufacturer and technology solutions provider is using ContiConnect Lite to create a bridge between tyre sensors and professional tyre management. Continental is also extending the  sensorisation of its commercial tyre products; since the end of 2023 it has been supplying its latest-generation of tyre sensors within all models in its Conti Urban city bus tyre range.

Enviro in the red in 2023, now positioned for profitability

Scandinavian Enviro Systems AB (Enviro) has published its financial results for 2023, and these figures reflect the expense involved with setting up a new recycling solution for end-of-life tyres. The Swedish firm achieved net revenues of SEK 13.9 million (£1.1 million) during the year, a 73.8 per cent increase on 2022 revenues. Operating results were still in the red at SEK -93.6 million (-£7.1 million) and earnings after tax were SEK -92.3 million (-£7.0 million) (2022: SEK -83.6 million).

Former Cooper Avon managers James Weekley, Matthew Vincent join Nova Motorsport team

Nova Motorsport has continued its recruitment of former Cooper Avon managers previously based at the company's erstwhile European headquarters in Melksham. James Weekley, former general manager at Avon Tyres Motorsport, leads Nova Motorsport as commercial director. Ex-Cooper Tire/Avon Motorsport product technology manager Matthew Vincent has also become Nova's senior product category manager. The two appointees join Paul Coates, Cooper Tire/Avon Motorsport general manager, whose appointment was previously announced, and who has become Nova's contracts manager. The experienced team has been assembled by founder and managing director of the brand’s parent company, SPC Group, Paul Hallas.

GRI appoints former Conti leader Barry Guildford global commercial director

Speciality and agricultural tyre manufacturer GRI has appointed Barry Guildford as its new global commercial director (GCD). The appointment bolsters the company’s increasingly international leadership team as the Sri Lanka based company proceeds with its global growth strategy. Guildford arrives with a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success in strategic leadership and sales management roles within the tyre industry over the last 23 years. He has held a variety of leadership positions within Continental, most recently as head of region Northeast Europe & head of sales ContiTrade. He joined GRI officially on 1 March. GRI has made significant strides in integrating sustainable materials in its flagship tyres in the last year, and demonstrated its leading sustainability position and expanding manufacturing base in Sri Lanka to Tyres & Accessories – see Tyrepress next week for more details.

Michelin joins Antin, Enviro announcing first end-of-life tyre recycling plant in Sweden

Michelin has finalised its shared investment plan alongside joint venture partners Enviro and Antin for the construction of a first end-of-life tyre recycling plant in Uddevalla, Sweden. The project, which broke ground in February, is based on Enviro’s pyrolysis technology. It has secured a series of multi-year contracts for the supply of used tyres and the upcycling of recovered carbon black and pyrolysis oil. The first plant has targeted a capacity to recycle approximately 35,000 tons of used tyres annually and to create up to 40 green jobs in the local community in its first phase.
