Tire Cologne: Making a European exhibition of the tyre business

Pirelli celebrates the Miami Grand Prix with a special Podium Cap

With Max Verstappen seemingly unstoppable, and already a two-time winner in Miami, Formula 1 exclusive tyre supplier Pirelli has found one way to bring some novelty to the podium at the Miami grand prix. Whichever three drivers take to the podium, they will wear a special edition of the Podium Cap Pirelli supplies to the top three finishers and the representative of the winning team. Pirelli says the turquoise cap is inspired by the waters that border the city’s beaches, featuring a stylised palm tree and the stars and stripes of the United States flag.

Hankook Tire – operating profit up 109% in Q1 2024

Hankook Tire & Technology has disclosed its financial performance for the first quarter of 2024, reporting sales of KRW 2,127.2 billion (£1.2 billion) and an operating profit of KRW 398.7 billion (£230.8 million) based on global consolidated financial results. Year over year, sales saw a modest increase of 1.1 per cent, while operating profit surged by 108.8 per cent.

Motorrad magazine test rates Dunlop RoadSmart IV ‘Very Good’

The Dunlop RoadSmart IV has been recognised by leading German magazine Motorrad as ‘Very Good’ in the publication’s latest motorcycle tyre test. The sports touring tyre was praised in particular for its feedback on country roads in the 06/2024 issue test, which tried out six tyres in sizes 120/70ZR17 (front) and 180/55ZR17 (rear) on a BMW R 1250 RS. The latest test follows similarly strong results in 2022 and 2023 tests. The same tyre won Motorrad’s 2022 touring tyre test in the same dimensions, while the tyre’s 19” front tyre long-distance touring specifications impressed last year.

European replacement tyre sales mostly down in Q1 2024

The European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) has published its members’ Q1 2024 replacement tyre sales figures, and the general trend remains towards lower sales volumes. “The general inflationary context continues to affect the demand in all tyre product lines,” comments Adam McCarthy, ETRMA secretary general.

Falken to display extensive range at The Tire Cologne

From energy-efficient EV tyres to robust off-road rubber to inspiring UUHP and commercial vehicle treads - Falken is presenting the most extensive range to date for all seasons - including the new Ziex ZE320. Visitors to the Sumitomo Rubber Industries flagship tyre brand will see its latest innovative tyres, such as the UUHP tire Azenis RS820, approved for speeds of up to 300 km/h, at the almost 400 sqm exhibition stand (Hall 6.1/C010 to D019). The Falken Ziex ZE320, the successor to the Falken Ziex ZE310 Ecorun, is also presented here. Even without the Ecorun designation, the new tyre is still more environmentally friendly than its predecessor.

Dunlop-shod teams’ 24h Le Mans performance ‘proves motorcycle tyre performance’

The 24 Heures Motos at Le Mans opened the 2024 FIM Endurance World Championship (EWC) season in mid-April. The race offered more success for the Dunlop brand at the famous French circuit, as the tyre supplier shod 35 of the 48 teams that entered. Using the Dunlop tyres, the BMW Motorrad World Endurance Team took the second podium step overall, while Dunlop Superstock winner, National Motos Honda, finished in P5 overall. The fastest laps were set towards the end of stints, demonstrating enduring tyre performance in demanding conditions, Dunlop said.

One less headache – let MFS keep your fleet on the road

After the doldrums of the “COVID years”, new vehicle sales are slowly recovering. The SMMT reports that the UK new car market clocked up its 20th consecutive month of growth in March, with a 10.4% year-on-year rise in registrations, adding 320,000 new cars – the best March since 2019; whilst 53,000 new light commercial vehicles also joined UK roads in March as more fleet owners upgraded to the latest models than in any other month in the last three years – an increase of 11.1%.

Michelin reports 4.6% lower Q1 2024 sales

Michelin Group has disclosed its financial results for the first quarter of 2024, reporting total sales amounting to €6,642 million. This figure marks a decline of 4.6 per cent compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. The decrease in sales can be attributed to various factors, including a decline in tyre volumes, driven by weaknesses in certain markets, including construction and agricultural tyres, as well as mining tyre inventory drawdowns.
