Smithers & Stackpole release Virtual Tire Lab

Testing, consulting, information, and compliance services firm Smithers has, together with tyre and vehicle development technology specialist Stackpole Engineering Services, debuted the Virtual Tire Lab. Announcing the launch, Smithers describes Virtual Tire Lab as a “unique, comprehensive toolset for analysing raw data and comparing, contrasting, and adjusting virtual tyre models for use in design analysis, simulation, and model certification.”

Sumitomo Rubber reports strong Q1 2024 profit growth

Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI) reports a 5.3 per cent year-on-year increase in sales revenue during the quarter ending 31 March 2024, to ¥291,360 million (£1,482.03 million). Business profit surged by 190.7 per cent to ¥23,183 million (£118.04 million), operating profit rose by 166.5 per cent to ¥20,696 million (£105.31 million) and profit attributable to owners of the parent jumping by 520.2 per cent to ¥24,841 million (£126.47 million).

New sizes join Avon WX7 winter range

Avon has expanded its WX7 winter tyre range with the addition of 12 SKUs for 17- to 19-inch rim diameters. The new dimensions grow the range to a total of 29 sizes to give increased access to a “broad spectrum of cars.”

ETRMA joins GDSO as associate member

The European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers' Association (ETRMA) has become an associate member of the Global Data Service Organisation (GDSO) for Tyres and Automotive Components, a non-profit organisation established in 2022 with the aim of standardising tyre-related data and facilitating access to and exchange of this data. Adam McCarthy, ETRMA secretary general, comments that the association’s decision to join GDSO “underscores the European tyre industry's commitment to driving technological advancement and sustainability within the sector."

Goodyear Blimp returns to European skies from new base

“A new era” began at Mülheim/Essen Airport in Germany towards the end of last week with the launch of the new Goodyear Blimp/Zeppelin season from a new location. Zeppelin NT, hangar operator WDL Group, and the tyre maker, represented by Frank Titz, Goodyear’s general manager of replacement consumer sales in the DACH (Germany, Austria & Switzerland) region, invited media and local dignitaries to welcome the airship and inaugurate the first flights over the Ruhr region.

Genan: “Back on track” in 2023 following “annus horribilis”

Danish firm Genan, the world's largest mechanical tyre recycling group, achieved a turnover of €58.7 million in 2023. This represents a seven per cent decrease compared to the previous year. However, despite the lower turnover, the company increased its EBITDA by over 50 per cent to almost €9.4 million, while operating profit (EBIT) multiplied from just over €750,000 to €3.2 million. Net profit, influenced negatively by exchange rate fluctuations, increased from €1.5 to €2 million.

Pirelli outperforms expectations in Q1 2024 results, pointing to better Q2

Financial analysts have said Pirelli’s first quarter 2024 results feature “strong sales”, which outperformed consensus estimates by 1 per cent. During the same period pre-tax profits (adjusted earnings before interest and taxes [EBIT] outperformed expectation at twice that rate [+2 per cent compared with the analysts consensus].

Circtec to supply bp with tyre-based marine fuel

Within the framework of an eight-year offtake agreement, UK-based tyre pyrolysis specialist Circtec will annually supply energy company bp with up to 75,000 tonnes of fuel and feedstock recovered from end-of-life tyres. Circtec will process these tyres at a plant it will set up in The Netherlands. In support of this offtake agreement, bp is providing Circtec a €12.5 million debt finance facility to contribute to the capex for expanding this plant into a commercial-scale operation.

Tyre and automotive investments key to China’s Ironclad friendship with Eastern Europe

When Chinese premiere Xi Jinping landed in Belgrade on 7 May 2024, the Serbian government literally rolled out the red carpet. As well as providing security, the president Xi’s escort of MIG-29 fighter jets was another way of honouring what has become known as the ”ironclad friendship” between the countries. After Serbia, Hungary is the next stop on president Xi’s tour of Eastern Europe. Since both countries have also become home to significant tyre and automotive manufacturing investments in recent years, it appears that the influence of China and Chinese companies in Eastern Europe is growing.

Sailun sets sights on 100% sustainable material usage by 2050

Yuan Zhongxue, director of the National Engineering Research Center for Rubber and Tire and honorary chairman of the Sailun Group, announced sustainable development goals (SDGs) for the tyre maker during the recent 2024 China Rubber Conference. The SDGs aim to progressively increase the utilisation of sustainable materials in tyre production, targeting 40 per cent by 2030 and striving for 100 per cent by 2050. Additionally, Sailun aims to reduce per tyre energy consumption and carbon emissions by 30 per cent, compared to 2022 levels, by 2030.
