ADAC tests winter tyres for compact SUVs – 7 good performers

In addition to evaluating the performance of 16 winter tyres in size 225/45 R17, European motoring clubs ADAC, TCS and ÖAMTC have tested a further 16 in size 205/60 R16, a dimension primarily worn by smaller SUVs. The test team fitted the tyres to a VW T-Roc and appraised their performance in dry, wet and wintry conditions as well as for environmental and sustainability-related factors such as noise, wear and rolling resistance.

TyreSafe connecting with driving instructors at ADINJC & Intelligent Instructor conference

TyreSafe exhibited at the ADINJC & Intelligent Instructor National Conference & Expo (Newark Showground, Nottingham; 8 October), continuing its mission to connect with road safety stakeholders. Almost 1,000 driving instructors and trainers from across the country attended, with a wide range of educational seminars, presentations, and dedicated zones covering various aspects of the driver training industry. TyreSafe has committed to supporting the promotion of road safety information and resources within the driver training community, and said that it welcomed hundreds to its stand, from which it was sharing tips, guidance and information about the crucial role tyres play in overall road safety. The organisation recently formed a new partnership with Intelligent Instructor, signalling its intent to build its relationship with instructors.

Top Auto Bild Sportscars rating for 4 winter tyres

Winter tyres are niche products in the UK but make a lot of sense in particular situations. High-powered performance cars, for example, may benefit from the added grip that season-specific rubber provides. Auto Bild Sportscars has evaluated 11 brands of tyre in size 225/40 R18 to gauge performance in snowy, wet and dry conditions. Four tyres gain the motoring publication’s highest recommendation, but Auto Bild Sportscars also warns against bad eggs in the basket.

Jiangsu General Thailand plant begins second phase

On 27 September, Jiangsu General’s Thailand factory held a groundbreaking ceremony for the second phase. The new production capacity project involves an investment of 1.884 billion yuan (approximately £210 million; €240 million) and plans to add 6 million semi-steel radial tyres and 500,000 all-steel radial tyres yearly.

5 exemplary tyres in Auto Bild all-season test

As promised, Auto Bild has further tested the 16 tyres remaining in its 2023 all-season test following the elimination of 19 products whose combined wet and dry braking distances didn’t make the grade. The motoring publication’s test team gave five of the size 225/45 R17 tyres their highest ‘exemplary’ rating and they declared a further three ‘good’ tyres. The remaining eight products finished testing with ‘satisfactory’ or ‘conditionally recommended’ ratings.

CITExpo 2023: Recovery and transformation of China’s tyre industry

In early September, the 18th China International Tire Expo (CITExpo 2023) was held in Shanghai. After three years of waiting, this year’s show attracted many dealers from overseas. An exhibitor from Jiangsu General told Tyrepress China: “The results of this year’s China International Tire Expo are quite good. We made appointments with 60 customers before the exhibition. Basically, all of them came. At the same time, we also met many new customers at the exhibition today.” At the popular CITExpo 2023, Tyrepress China noticed that China’s tyre industry is showing two new trends: recovery and transformation.

Former Continental Russia boss Barvinok heading Ikon Tyres’ R&D

Vladimir Barvinok, who was previously general director of Continental Tires Rus, is Ikon Tyres’ new director of product development. He joined Ikon Tyres on 25 September 2023 as head of the company’s new Product Development functional area, which includes product portfolio management, technical regulation and certification, innovation, as well as research and development.

Maserati Grecale SUV features Continental OE tyres

Maserati has selected Continental tyres as original equipment on its Grecale SUV. 19-inch Continental CrossContact LX Sport tyres as well as 21-inch CrossContact RX tyres have received worldwide approval for the model. 20-inch Continental EcoContact 6 tyres have also been approved. The latter tyre is designed for energy-saving and noise-optimised driving, making it especially suitable for the hybrid version of the SUV, according to Continental.

Kirkby Tyres warehouse, mezzanine expansion enables increased stocks of ATV, turf tyres

Kirkby Tyres’ investment in additional warehousing space at its central site in Speke, Liverpool over the past couple of years was recently completed, further extending its specialist mezzanine flooring facilities. This increase in warehousing footprint brings its total mezzanine facilities to 30,000 sqft. The space has been designed specifically to hold ATV and lawn & turf products. The wholesaler told Tyrepress that this has allowed it to invest in an increasing number of specialist sizes and deeper stock levels. The warehouse expansion project also included several sustainability measures recently recognised by ISO 14001 certification.

Russian army tyres being held together with repair patches

As the war in Ukraine continues, so do the Russian Army’s tyre problems. We have previously reported on the observations of military analysts that the Russian military has been let down by the combination of low-quality and very old tyres. More recently – and bizarrely – we learnt that presumably end-of-life tyres were being used as defensive camouflage for Russian air force jets. Now, the problem is just lack of supply.
