i247 Group tells fleets not to base tyre policy on unit price alone

Fleet tyre choice should be based on real world data, not just unit price, with the potential to make substantial savings on maintenance budgets, according to i247 Group, the outsourced fleet management provider. The Poole-based company, which maintains over a million vehicles on UK roads, says that fleets can make significant cost savings with a tyre policy based on the right tyre for their vehicle and operating behaviour (including load, start-stop and how they drive). In one recent tyre spend analysis, i247 Group found savings in excess of £1million.

Fitch upgrades Pirelli’s credit rating to ‘BBB’

Fitch Ratings has upgraded Pirelli & C. Spa’s Long-Term Issuer Default Rating (IDR) and senior unsecured debt rating from ‘BBB-’ to ‘BBB’, with a Stable outlook. The credit rating agency attributes this upgrade to Pirelli’s strong profitability and robust free cash flow (FCF), which have enabled significant deleveraging below Fitch’s previous positive rating sensitivity.

New Formula E world champion to be crowned at the Hankook London E-Prix

Season 10 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship concludes this weekend (19 to 21 July) with a final event in the UK. The final two races of the season at the Hankook London E-Prix will determine the new Formula E world champion. Leading the standings going into the final round is New Zealander Nick Cassidy of the Jaguar TCS Racing team, who currently has 167 points. Close behind are fellow New Zealander Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing) and German driver Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche), both with 155 points. Fourth-placed António Félix da Costa (TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team) has also been performing strongly, winning four of the last five races. Seven drivers remain in the running to win the championship at the end of the weekend.

Top Chinese Tyremakers: Manufacturers ranked by tyre production capacity in 2023

In 2023, Linglong’s various factories had a production capacity of 91.34 million tyres. Including the production of PCR products at the Serbian factory, in 2025 the tyre manufacturer’s annual production capacity will likely exceed 100 million tyres. Linglong’s tyre production base in Zhaoyuan, Shandong, has an astonishing production capacity of 36.1 million sets, including 30 million PCR, 5.85 million TBR, and 250,000 OTR tyres. The Dezhou base in Shandong has capacity for 9 million PCR and 3.2 million TBR tyres a year. The Guangxi production base can make 11 million PCR (1 million more than the designed capacity), 2 million TBR, and 140,000 OTR annually. The Hubei production base has capacity for the construction of 9 million PCR and 2.4 million TBR tyres. That opeartion’s designed PCR capacity is 12 million, and further under-construction capacity is expected to be completed in 2024. The Jilin production base can make 1.5 million PCR and 1 million TBR tyres. The company said that the capacity of the Jilin factory’s PCR production lines is expected to reach 6 million tyres a year in 2024. The company’s planned two production bases in Shaanxi and Anhui have not yet released their production capacity in 2023. The Thailand factory has 13 million PCR and 2.2 million TBR among overseas factories. Linglong said that its Thailand factory reduced its PCR production capacity by 2 million in 2023. The Serbian factory achieved a production capacity of 800,000 TBR tyres in 2023, and the designed scale of 1.6 million tyres is expected to be completed in 2024.

Contec bolsters growth plans with new CFO

Polish firm Contec, developer of the proprietary ‘Molten’ pyrolysis process for recovering carbon black, oil and steel from end-of-life tyres, has appointed Dominika Żelazek to the position of CFO. Referring to this “strategic move” that underscores the company’s “commitment to innovation and sustainable growth,” Contec says Żelazek comes on board at a time when it is preparing for “international expansion and fundraising efforts.”

Goodbye Continental & Bridgestone – hello Gislaved

At the start of July, Russian tyre maker JSC Cordiant announced completing rebranding of the former Continental tyre plant in Kaluga. The facility is now producing Gislaved tyres, thanks to a brand rights deal negotiated with Continental in May 2023. It appears the Gislaved name will also take centre stage when tyre production at the ex-Bridgestone factory in Ulyanovsk restarts.
