Aramid – a material for a changing industry

On average, new cars sold in the European Union last year emitted three per cent less carbon dioxide than those sold in 2014. Yet average CO2 output was still close to 25 grams per kilometre – or more than 20 per cent – above the 95 gram limit the EU has set for 2020. Achieving the 2020 goal requires a further drop in vehicle running resistance, and car makers expect tyre OEMs to contribute to this goal by offering even lighter products with lower rolling resistance. This push for greener tyres that weigh less is music to the ears of the industry’s market-leading aramid supplier.

It’s been a year since Tyres & Accessories first met the recently-appointed head of Giti Tire’s new R&D Centre Europe. At the time, R&D director Stefan Fischer shared the tyre maker’s plans and showed off the still largely-empty premises where specialists would soon be hard at work. A lot has changed in 12 months: Upon returning to the Hannover, Germany-based facility, we saw it was well and truly up and running and, in the important area of original equipment development, even further established than originally planned.

Pirelli’s Carlisle tyre plant is going 100% premium

Following the news that Pirelli is to receive funding from the UK government’s regional growth fund, Tyres & Accessories visited Pirelli’s Carlisle tyre manufacturing plant and met with industrial director, Paulo Batistini and engineering manager, Alan Wilson in order to find what this and other recent investments mean in practice.

While no official figures have been released, based on the fact that £950 million of government money is being supplied to 119 British business on the proviso that taxpayer funding is matched 5:1 with private investment it is a fair guess to assume that Pirelli is pushing millions towards the development of the latest generation of eco-tyres in Carlisle. And this fits with the company’s wider strategy. Pirelli’s latest industrial plan, published in November 2011, has the stated aim of leading what it defines as the premium market by 2015. With this in mind, the recent developments which centre on transitioning the plant towards to almost exclusively high performance output (and therefore high value products) are to be expected.

Nankang Rubber Celebrates its 50th Anniversary

The predecessor of Nankang Rubber Tire Co. Ltd, Nankang Rubber Plant, was founded in Taipei city, Taiwan in 1945, mainly producing rickshaw tyres, rubber shoes and industrial products. In 1959, the company underwent privatisation and was reorganized as Nankang Rubber Tire Co. Ltd., as it has been for the past 50 years. To meet the growth of business scale, a second plant was established in Shin-Fung, Hsinchu County in 1973. In 1997, the latest plant, Nankang International Co., was finally set up in Zhangjiagang free trade zone, Jiangsu Province, People's Republic of China, with the highest production capacity of 37,000 pieces a day. This month, as the company reaches the half century mark, Tyres & Accessories looks over the company’s five decades of history.

Back to 50 years ago, when the economic and industrial infrastructure was insufficient, and when the technology and raw material of the rubber industry was not easily accessible, Nankang Rubber Tire Co. had to rely on its own to overcome the challenges in terms of technical procedure, design and facilities.

Goodyear OTR, leadership changes and landslides

During the course of July, we all witnessed a veritable landslide of changes. In turn, these developments have implications across European and even global markets. And yes, of course, there was also that small matter of a general election and a new Prime Minister in the UK (see page 36 of the forthcoming August edition of Tyres & Accessories). But that’s not what I am referring to here…

Like many of us, in July and August, I took some time out for a family holiday. Upon my return, I learnt that two particularly headline-grabbing news items had broken. Arguably the biggest and most wide-ranging news was Yokohama’s confirmation that it is buying Goodyear’s OTR business. Clearly, that development has strategic implications for both parties. The confirmation came on 22 July, 12 days after reports suggested Yokohama was in “advanced talks” with Goodyear to buy Goodyear OTR. Yokohama subsequently confirmed those reports, so it wasn’t a surprise that they would announce the news just under a fortnight later. Indeed, as we reported at the time, Tyres & Accessories learnt that several suitors had been involved in earlier talks relating to the purchase of Goodyear OTR about a month earlier than that.
