Tyres Stolen from Pirelli Delivery

On 16 Friday December 2005 12 Pzero Nero M&S tyres went missing from a transport vehicle destined for Gothenburg. The 225/50R17 94V PZero Nero, M&S tyres were loaded at Pirelli, Burton-on-Trent but failed to arrive at their destination.

Nokian Launches New Studded Winter Tyres

Nokian Tyres’ added two new studded tyres to its Hakkapeliitta product range. The Hakkapeliitta 5, a studded winter tyre for passenger cars, and Nokian Hakkapeliitta Sport Utility 5, for SUVs, are both designed to promote safe winter driving.

The tyres feature what Nokian describes as the ”bear claw”, which is intended to enhance performance and together with the further developed square stud, improve grip properties. The bear claw is a claw-like projection on the front edge of the tread blocks, which holds the stud in position during braking. The stud has been further developed by enhancing its square design. Several improvements to tyre structure and tread pattern are also said to improve the reliability of winter driving.

Ecosystem Takes on Evashred UK Distributorship

Ecosystem Ltd has become the UK distributor for Evashred tyre shredders made by FV Evans & Sons NZ. These machines may be new to the UK, but they have been successfully sold into New Zealand & Australia for many years. According to the new UK distributor, the machines can be built with electric or hydraulic motors and can be supplied static, or mobile in a truck for on site shredding.

Rubber Recovery and Crumb Rubber win WRAP Tender

The results of WRAP’s (the Waste & Resources Action Programme) open tender are now in and Rubber Recovery Ltd, based in Barnsley, and Crumb Rubber Ltd, from Devon, have been named as winners. The tender asked potential applications to come up with new products made from used tyre. One of the winning suggestions uses retreading, while the other is based on a new concept.

Corrupt Malaysian Dealers Selling Re-Grooved Tyres as Retreads

Confusion over the difference between retreads and re-grooved tyres means retreads may not be phased out of the Malaysian market after all. The news comes after Malaysian transport Ministry Secretary General Datuk Mohd Safaruddin raised the hackles of retreaders worldwide, by reportedly saying that the use of retreaded tyres would be phased out of his country. Digging deeper it appears that the combination of the dishonest sales of regrooved tyres as re-treads and some language confusion has clouded the issue.

Pirelli Tyres has announced that Mill Tyres, Boston has been awarded Pirelli Performance Centre status. Mill Tyres becomes the 50th centre to achieve this prestigious award since the introduction of the PPC concept in the late 1990s.

Record US Tyre Shipments

Passenger car replacement tyre shipments are expected to reach a record total of 205 million units this year, according to the latest RMA figures. The previous record was 198.9 million units, set in 2000. This will be the first time shipments have exceeded 200 million units in any given year. Similarly, tyre shipments for the combined original equipment (OE) and replacement consumer and commercial sectors are expected to increase by 2.2 per cent compared to 2004 as a result of continued steady economic growth.

Stamford Tyres First Half 2006 Net Profit up 114 per cent

Singapore’s Stamford Tyres has published first half 2006 results which show the company is ahead of schedule as far as net profits are concerned. In the six month period ended 31 October the company recorded a 114.3 per cent rise in net profits to S$6.5 million.

Ruia Acquires Dunlop India and Falcon Tyres

The privately owned Ruia Group has closed a deal to buy Dunlop India Ltd and Falcon Tyres Ltd, from the Dubai-based MR Chhabria group for a reported 2 billion rupees (£25 million).

“An agreement has been reached between Mr Pawan Kumar Ruia and the (Chhabria) Jumbo Group to hand over both Dunlop India and Falcon Tyres,” said H Sandu, a Chhabria group spokesman, confirming the development took place at a meeting in Mumbai.

TIC: ‘Part Worn Tyres a Cause for Concern’

The sale of part-worn tyres is still a cause for concern, the Tyre Industry Council has reported. These concerns are backed-up by the environmental protection services at Glasgow City Council who found in checks at tyre dealerships, that a high percentage of the second-hand tyres checked did not meet the legal requirements and therefore could have posed a risk to an un-suspecting motorist.

Kumho Launches New Ecsta AST, Road Venture MT Tyres

(Akron/Tire Review) At the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Kumho Tire USA Inc introduced its new Ecsta AST high performance, all-season tyre as well as its new Road Venture MT, reportedly the widest and tallest light truck tyre the company has ever offered.

The Ecsta AST tyre, designed for sports cars and tuned sedans, according to Kumho, features a directional tread design with dual-angle cross grooves and asymmetrical lateral grooves for cornering grip, hydroplaning resistance and wet traction.

Hankook Launches Numerous Tyres at SEMA

(Akron/Tire Review) Hankook Tire America Corp unveiled a host of innovative tyre products and its new model at the SEMA Show last week.

Among the new tyres on display was the Dynapro MT RT03, the latest addition to Hankook’s off-road and light truck tyre line. The Dynapro MT RT03 features a V-shaped center block to firmly grip the road surface for added traction and better handling, as well as a side protection block that protects against the shock of foreign objects and pothole damage while improving traction in mud and soft terrain. The Dynapro MT RT03 will be available in sizes ranging from 15 to 22 inches.

20 per cent of Tyres Illegal

Data from the NTDA’s TyreCheck survey shows that just under 20 per cent of tyres are not replaced until the tread depth is worn to below 1.6mm. Members of the association inspected over 10,000 cars brought into their premises during the period of the TyreCheck. All the tyres, including the spare, were checked for tread depth, visual condition and pressure.
