Coroner Warns of Danger of Faulty Tyres

Many motorists could unknowingly be driving around with faulty tyres, Birmingham’s coroner warned after an inquest into a road death. Aidan Cotter made his comments after hearing how a pre-existing tyre defect caused a vehicle to swerve off a motorway and crash into a concrete pillar, causing the death of the driver.

Report Says “Give Motorists Data on Tyres’ Fuel Efficiency”

The Fuel Efficiency Study by the Transportation Research Board in the USA has called on Congress to allow the National Highways Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to collect data on the fuel efficiency of different tyres and to make this available to the public. The Board believes that, were they given all the facts, motorists would opt for the most fuel-efficient brands. If this were to happen, no doubt low rolling resistance and fuel efficiency would assume paramount importance in new tyre design.

Avon Tyres British GT Championship Begins

“A dream collection of exotica” is one description of the line-up of cars that will be racing at Oulton Park over the Easter weekend, as part of the Brookson DWF F3/GT Festival. Supercars from 12 manufacturers, including Aston Martin, Ferrari, Lotus and Porsche will contest the first round of the prestigious Avon Tyres British GT Championship. The front running cars in the championship are capable of reaching 60 mph in 3 seconds and have the potential to reach almost 200 mph.

US Companies Plan Tyres-to-Ethanol Facility

US companies Startech Environmental Corp. and Future Fuels (FFI) in the building of FFI’s own $84 million Waste-to-Ethanol Facility to be constructed in Toms River, New Jersey. “An important fact sometimes overlooked is that waste is an inexhaustible, renewable, ever-recurring resource.”

Joseph F. Longo, Startech Environmental Corp., president Startech also received the Letter of Intent from FFI for FFI’s purchase of a 100 ton-per-day Startech Plasma Converter System (PCS) for installation in the Waste-to-Ethanol Facility in Toms River, scheduled to go online in late 2007. Plans call for the Toms River Facility expansion to include a series of additional Startech PCSs.

Dunlop Bike Tyre Scores Well in Second Test

The new Dunlop Sportmax Qualifier scored another significant victory in its second major international comparative tyre test; this time by German magazine PS.

The test confirmed the result published last month carried out by US magazine, Sport Rider, which compared the top road tyres on the market. The Dunlop Sportmax Qualifier was pitched against the latest offerings from Michelin, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Avon, Metzeler and Continental in a gruelling assessment of traction, braking, steering response and general handling qualities.

Aeolus Industrial Tyres Expands Availability in Europe

Chinese brand Aeolus is set to introduce a range of low-loader tyres in the Netherlands and across Europe. This news represents Aeolus’ response to the ever-increasing demand for these tyres from European companies in the transport business. The expansion of this line again signifies the increasing Chinese presence in the European tyre market. Aeolus has selected Heuver Banden of Den Ham to distribute these tyres in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Denmark and France. Kirkby Tyres sells Aeolus products in the UK.

National Tyres to Double Number of Outlets

Axle Group executives have announced plans to acquire up to 200 independent retail outlets across the UK in an effort to double the number of branches in the company’s National Tyres chain. Group financial director, John Kemp told Tyres & Accessories that National Tyres is “actively looking” for the right kind of acquisition targets and is “prepared to borrow” to do this. In his words, expanding the retail network is a great opportunity to “further enhance (the) bottom line.”

The announcement coincides with the publication of the company’s financial results, which show that the company achieved £121.4 million of sales in 2005, up 7 per cent on the previous year. During the period Axle Group recorded an operating profit of £883,000, almost £9 million more than the company reported in its 2004 accounts.

SHH to Exclusively Distribute Nankang Tyres In Brunei

Sin Hup Huat Company (SHH Co.). has signed a memorandum of understanding with Nankang Rubber Tyres Corporation Taiwan, for SHH Co to exclusively market and sell Nankang’s full range of tyres for Brunei.

The tyre distribution deal will be supported by further contracts that SHH managing director Steven Kuan signed with Brunei’s Hyundai dealer Setia Motors Sdn. Bhd. This makes SHH Co. the preferred service provider for tyres, wheel services and roadside assistance for Setia Motors Sdn. Bhd. SHH simultaneously sealed a deal with 24/7 Roadside Assist, represented by its managing director Mark Adams. 24/7 Roadside Assist will join forces with SHH Co. as its official affiliate service partner and retail outlet for roadside assistance service and preferred workshop.

Bridgestone Summer Tyres Top German Tyre Tests

Bridgestone tyres have topped a number of comparative tests in some of Germany’s leading automotive publications. The Bridgestone Potenza RE050A was one of just two models to receive the top ‘highly recommendable’ rating in its category from ‘ADAC Motorwelt’. The respected journal of Germany’s automobile association compared a line-up of 17 225/45 R17 Y/W tyres running on a Mercedes C-Class 230 – with dry handling evaluated at the Nürburgring; and wet performance, comfort, noise and rolling resistance measured at the Contidrom complex near Hamburg.

Significant growth at Sapphire Energy Recovery

Whichever way you look at it 2005 was a significant year for Sapphire Energy Recovery. Not only the did the company successfully dispose of more than 100,000 tonnes of tyres, but it markedly increased industry awareness thanks to a high-profile (putting it mildly) advertising campaign. But neither achievement has gone unnoticed as the 2006 TAFF award nominations (see page 38) recognise the company on both counts. Furthermore Sapphire expects to process its 50 millionth tyre in the coming months, something that is particularly impressive when you consider that the company was only founded in 2000.

Continental AG Publishes Record Sales and Earnings

Continental AG’s consolidated sales rose by 9.8 per cent to 13.82 billion euros (prior year: 12.59 billion) in 2005. The company’s operating result (EBIT) increased at an even higher rate of 30.2 per cent to 1.5 billion euros (prior year: 1.15 billion). The return on sales amounted to 10.9 per cent (prior year: 9.2 per cent). “When adjusted for scope of consolidation and one-time effects, EBIT in 2005 rose by 165.1 million euros over the previous year,” explained Dr Alan Hippe, executive board member responsible for finances.
