Goodyear Steer Tyres Clock Up 266,000 Miles

A truck driver from well-known UK haulier Stan Robinson Ltd has been named Britain’s top driver by Goodyear after managing to achieve a remarkable 425,000 kilometres (266,000 miles) on the same set of Goodyear steer tyres.

Nigel Brown took delivery of his new Scania in April 2003, fitted with Goodyear Marathon LHS 385/65R22.5 steer tyres. Three years later, he had clocked up a mileage equivalent to driving ten times around the Equator and the set of Goodyear steer tyres had yet to be changed.

Falcon Tyres posts 300 per cent growth in net profit

Falcon Tyres Ltd has recorded a 300 per cent increase in net profit since it was bought by the Indian Ruia group. Falcon Tyres registered a net profit of 36.3 million rupees compared with 9.2 million in 2004 – 2005. Total company turnover stood at 2.55 billion rupees against 2.19 billion the same time last year. The company announced 25 per cent dividend for its shareholders, which was 2.50 rupees per share, the highest in its history.

Don’t Try This at Home – Two More World Records for Terry Grant

International stunt driving ace Terry Grant drove himself into the records books yet again recently, by performing two car control records for the Guinness World Records TV show in Madrid, Spain. He used his new TVR Sagaris to break the 2005 Guinness World Record set by Dale Morrison for 69 consecutive and uninterrupted ‘donuts‘. (360° on the spot spins). Terry coaxed the standard road-going Sagaris and its Yokohama tyres to a total of 71 to snatch the record.

John O’Groats to Land’s End on Flat Tyres

Goodyear has set eccentric British challenger Lloyd Scott, a new challenge – drive the length of the nation on flat tyres. Lloyd, 48, from Essex, who has previously cycled across Australia on a Penny Farthing bicycle and completed this year’s London Marathon in a full suit of armour, has agreed to take the wheel throughout May for Goodyear’s RunOnFlat Rally. The RunOnFlat Rally will see Lloyd drive the more than 1600 miles in distance across the British Isles, from John O’Groats, where he started yesterday, to Land’s End in a Mini with flat tyres.

Goodyear Has Record First Quarter

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. reported a net income of $74 million for the first quarter of the year against record first quarter sales of $4.9 billion. Sales for the quarter were up 2 per cent compared to the same period last year, while the net income results were up 9 per cent versus the first quarter of 2005.

Sales declined 5 per cent in the European Union Tire business compared to the first quarter of 2005, which was the strongest first quarter in the unit’s history. Price and product mix improvements were not enough to offset unfavourable currency translation of approximately $98 million and lower volume in the consumer replacement market.

C-Tyres Scoops TAFF Environmental Award

The environmentally-friendly credentials of retreaded tyres have been given a major boost following the news that C-Tyres Ltd, one of the UK’s leading retread manufacturers, scooped the Environment Award at the prestigious TAFF (Tyre and Fast Fit) Awards, organised and presented by the National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA). C-Tyres managing director Gary Oliver was presented with the award by Renault Vans National Fleet Sales Manager (LCV), Mark Lovett on 26th April at the NTDA’s Annual Dinner held at the Birmingham Metropole Hotel.

Record Recovery Levels for Responsible Recycler Scheme

Statistics newly released by the Tyre Recovery Association show that for the first time members of the Association (all of whom are affiliated to the TIC Responsible Recycler Scheme) collectively recovered over 320,000 tonnes of waste tyres in 2005. This represented more than a 12 per cent increase over the 2004 figure (285,000 tonnes) and is the first time the Scheme has passed the 300,000 tonnes barrier. Indications suggest this figure will rise even further in 2006. The UK industry is estimated to generate 475,000 tonnes of used tyre arisings annually.

Apollo Tyres Ltd Concludes Acquisition of Dunlop South Africa

Apollo Tyres Ltd has formally concluded the process of acquiring Dunlop Tyres International (Pyt) Ltd (Dunlop South Africa) in a £36 million all cash deal. Apollo’s board of directors had approved this acquisition on January 31, 2006, at a board meeting in Mumbai, India. All regulatory approvals in India and South Africa alongside the transfer of shares have already been completed.

Federal Reports Record Shipments

Federal Corporation shipped 1.7 million tyres in the first quarter of 2006 – the largest quarterly total in the company’s 52-year history. The figure reflects increased production at Federal’s Taiwanese and Chinese bases. In March alone the company delivered 670,000 tyres.
