Exhaust supplier Klarius is continuing to supply garages with exhausts, catalytic converters, diesel particulate filters and mountings. The company said it is supporting the aftermarket supply chain to ensure that critical vehicle repairs can still be carried out when needed, helping members of the public and key workers alike to stay mobile for essential journeys during the COVID-19 outbreak.

IGA urges against MOT discounting

Many garages have responded to the drastic decline in business under lockdown conditions by offering discounts on MOTs. However, the Independent Garage Association (IGA) argues that such a measure cannot be sustained. The associations says that it is campaigning against the practice of discounting MOTs to help garages recuperate costs from the loss of revenue throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

Which tyre garages are open during lockdown?

The word unprecedented has been used a lot recently. However, it is true to say that the UK tyre industry has never experienced a set of circumstances like this and hasn’t witnessed national action on this scale since the second world war.  So, which tyre garages are open during lockdown?

Will tyre dealers stay open in a lockdown?

While the government has introduced significant social distancing measures including closing schools, and while tyre businesses are offering innovative contactless solutions, garages are still open for business. Are truck tyre technicians key workers?

Today (Friday 20 March 2020) is the last day at school for most children after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that all schools in England will close in a statement given on Wednesday 18 March 2020. However, schools won’t close entirely. Children of so-called key-workers will continue to go to school – something has led many parents to grapple with the question of what exactly a key worker is.

Trailblazer tyre technician training gets underway

Ask anyone involved in tyre industry training and they will say two things. Firstly, there is a growing need to develop a sustainable career path in the technical end of the tyre business. The good news is that, after months and years of hard work by key industry figures, there is now an appropriate answer to both questions. So, with this in mind, in mid-November Tyres & Accessories visited the first cohort of trailblazer Licence Commercial Tyre Technician (LCCT) training, which incorporates an accredited apprenticeship standard and the NTDA’s REACT licence.

Michelin: Wet grip testing at 1.6mm will provide greater transparency

The debate over how much tread depth is sufficient and recommendable has been going on for years. While some tyre makers and motoring groups support changing the legal minimum tread depth to 3mm as a move towards greater peace of mind, Michelin has been a vocal advocate of not only keeping 1.6mm the legal minimum but of actually using tyres right down to this tread depth. It is also one of a growing number of parties calling for legislation that informs consumers how tyres perform when worn. Earlier this month, Michelin shared the latest developments in the quest for ‘Long Lasting Performance’.

Tyre aging law could take effect in 2020

The UK government is consulting on plans to ban old tyres for buses, coaches, lorries and minibuses and a new law could be introduced this year and come into force early 2020. Tyres aged 10 years and older would be banned from use on buses, coaches, lorries and minibuses under the new proposals. However, further clarity about precisely what the new rules will cover is needed.
