White Grooves to Differentiate F1 Tyres

Bridgestone has confirmed it will use white markings to distinguish the softer compound tyre options used in the Formula One Malaysian Grand Prix. The marking, applied to the bottom of the tyres’ second inside groove, was one of a number of options tested during practice days in Sepang following complaints about the red dots used during the Australian Grand Prix.

Rockwell Automation Names New Automotive and Tyres VP

Rockwell Automation has named John Genovesi vice president of its automotive, tyre and rubber industry initiative. In his new role, Genovesi will lead the company’s global sales efforts directed at helping automotive, tyre and rubber machine builders, components suppliers and end manufacturers compete on a global basis. Since joining the company in 1989, Genovesi has served in a variety of sales positions including branch manager in both Rochester and Buffalo, N. Y. Most recently, he served as the district manager in Cleveland, Ohio.

“John’s previous management positions gave him the opportunity to clearly demonstrate his superb leadership and communication skills,” said Keiran Coulton, senior vice president, Rockwell Automation. “His passionate drive for results and extensive sales experience make him uniquely qualified to lead our automotive, tyre and rubber industry initiatives, enhancing our ability to deliver high-value solutions to our global customers.“

Old Tyres Find a New Home

Tyres & Accessories have reported on a range of uses for discarded tyres, including as matting for children’s playgrounds and as nappy and laptop computer bags, but as far as we’re aware this is a UK first….

‘Earthship Brighton’, the first house in the UK to employ old tyres as a major building material, has recently been completed after a construction project lasting several years. The eco-friendly home is entirely fabricated from recycled materials and considerable use has been made of recycled tyres in the construction of its walls. The American based organisation and pioneer of the concept, Earthship Biotechture, state that the tyres are used to “form a rammed earth brick encased in steel belted rubber.” They claim that this brick and the walls thus formed are virtually indestructible.

Kumho Tyres to Sponsor MSA British Rallycross Championship

Kumho Tyres will be the title sponsor of the MSA British Rallycross Championship (BRC) for the next three years. The company’s contract will also see the introduction, for the first time, of a control tyre for the British championship’s Supercar and SuperModified categories. The British Rallycross Drivers Association (BRDA), which organises the MSA British Rallycross Championship has negotiated the deal under which Kumho tyres will become specified equipment.

BRDA chairman John Horton said “Kumho will back the MSA British Rallycross Championship for the next three years and offer considerable financial and promotional support. This partnership with Kumho will bring stability to the BRC and the resources to promote the championship to a wider audience.”

Federal Tyres Looks to Middle East Markets

Taiwanese tyremaker Federal Tyres has entered into an agreement with Dubai-based tyre distributor Al Saeedi Middle East to import tyres into the United Arab Emirates, a market into which more than six million tyres are imported each year.

Federal Corporation president Chen Da stated that not only have the levels of imports entering the UAE been growing annually, but the country is also an important re-export hub for global tyre manufacturers. “So we believe it is time to strengthen our presence in the UAE as well as in other GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) countries in association with a strong local partner. In Al Saeedi Middle East, which has more than two decades of excellent track-record in the UAE tyre business, we have found a strategic partner.”

Viking Pledges its Support for TyreSafe

Viking International has pledged its support for the work of the recently formed safety organisation, TyreSafe.

Since its January launch TyreSafe has acquired an impressive list of supporters from across the industry including retailers, manufacturers and wholesalers, and has become recognised as a leading industry voice on issues relating to tyre safety. Its aim is to increase public awareness about tyre safety issues through high profile media campaigns.

F1 Teams Have a “Good Understanding” of 2007 Tyres – Bridgestone

With the F1 Australian Grand Prix – the first of the 2007 season – taking place on March 18 drivers are getting ample opportunity to get a better feel for the Bridgestone tyres during practice sessions. The March 16 practice sessions saw Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa shine through as the best overall performers. The first practice session began on a wet circuit, which meant that Bridgestone’s wet and extreme wet tyres were given an airing. With the second session run in much drier conditions the medium and soft dry compound tyres were put into use.

Check Your Tyres and Save the World

Speaking at the Geneva motor show, the director general of the London-based FIA Foundation, David Ward, has reiterated the significant financial and environmental impact of driving with under inflated tyres.

As part of the ‘Think Before You Drive’ campaign the FIA Foundation has conducted in partnership with Bridgestone, the foundation has been privy to the results of numerous studies. “In doing this campaign, where there’s been a huge number of tyre testing around Europe, we’ve actually discovered the whole environmental story,” commented Mr. Ward.

With Hankook’s 105,000 square metre production facility in Hungary complete and ready to commence production, the Korean tyremaker is already looking ahead to the day when its global production will reach 100 million tyres a year.

Apollo to Import OTR Tyres into India

Apollo Tyres is considering sourcing OTR tyres from its acquired South African production facilities in order to meet increased demand from the construction and mining sectors. These tyres will most likely come from the 252,000 sq ft Dunlop plant in Durban, which Apollo acquired in April 2006 along with another facility in South Africa and two in Zimbabwe. Ten thousand tyres are produced every day at the Durban site.

Sixth Consecutive Record Year For B-Quik

2006 was the 6th consecutive record year for B-Quik, the Thailand-based tyre and car services retailer. The company serviced 250,000 customers through its total of 45 centres, of which three were new stores opened during 2006.

Hi-Q Becomes Approved Supplier to Avonline Telecoms

National fast fit operator, Hi-Q Fleet, has secured a major contract to supply the tyre management service to an expanding telecommunications installation company. Avonline plc, based in Ashton Vale in Bristol, is one of the UK’s leading installation contractors and has a fleet of over 600 vehicles which cover the length and breadth of the UK.

Tyre Recovery Association Elects Two New Officers

The UK’s Tyre Recovery Association has elected both a new President and a new Vice President / Treasurer each to serve two year terms. The Association’s new president for 2007/08 leading industry figure Tim Stott, general manager of Sapphire Energy Recovery Ltd, the Lafarge/Michelin joint venture. Tim replaces Roger Hicks, managing director of Charles Lawrence International Ltd and the TRA’s first ever President, who also served a two year term.

New Winter Tyres from Nokian

Nokian Tyres has developed a number of new products for the fast growing European winter tyre market. These tyres have been produced with Central European driving conditions in mind and therefore their design and construction features place maximised safety especially in winter conditions as their number one priority.

New legislation and improving economic conditions in Eastern Europe have been two of the main factors behind the rise of the winter tyre market, a market in which about 67 million passenger car winter tyres were sold in 2006, some 12% more than the previous year.
