Kumho 18-inch Nemesis Tyres Complete Maiden Rally Raid

Kumho’s new 18-inch rally raid tyre has completed its maiden event, with all four of the Bowler Nemesis 4x4s the company supplied completing the Baja Italia event. The Nemesis, a specialist V8-powered rally raid 4×4, had been due to make its debut on the Lisbon-Dakar Rally earlier this year, but the event was cancelled at the last minute, due to terrorist threats.

Four such Bowlers were entered for the Baja Italia (14-16 March), a rally centered around the dried river beds above Venice. These included the Kumho-liveried vehicle of Richard Hayward and Alex Cole; the second British entry of Greg Macleod and Oliver Ford; the French entry of Thierry Charbonnier and Quin Evans and the Belgian one of Joost Van Cauwenberge and Marc Devos.

Keegan: Goodyear Well Positioned Despite Economic Uncertainty

In his address at Goodyear’s 2008 annual shareholders’ meeting on April 5, chairman and CEO Robert J. Keegan said the company is well positioned for future success despite economic uncertainty in 2008. This, he said, is the result of the determination and innovative thinking exhibited by thousands of Goodyear associates around the world that helped turn the company around.

“Our company’s product, brand and customer mix has become considerably richer,” said Keegan. “We are more focused on the premium segments of the global tire markets, which have relatively inelastic pricing dynamics. Our ability to generate top-line growth is underpinned by our product leadership strategy. We focus our industry-leading new product engine on increasing our mix of high-value-added tyres. The introduction of impactful new products to our portfolio globally raised the bar again in 2007.”

Company Applies for Tyres to Diesel Patent

Paul Archer, a former firefighter from Durham, has applied to patent an invention that turns old car tyres into good quality diesel oil. Thanks to a suggestion from his patent attorney, his business now expects to earn millions from selling licences worldwide. From the germ of an idea in the early 1990s, Paul Archer (who now lives in the East Midlands) and his business partners have formed a company – UTD Research Ltd – and built a working prototype that is now set to process up to two million old tyres a year at their first UK plant near Wrexham, North Wales.

The UTD invention means that the environment can be spared the harmful effects of millions of tons of old tyres being tipped into landfill sites, and increasingly scarce fossil fuels can be eked out with the oil recovered from used tyres. In a recent televised test, reclaimed oil from UTD’s process was mixed with fuel-station diesel to power a standard family saloon car. With no modifications at all, the car performed normally.

Kumho Recommended by Leading European Publications

Kumho reports that its products scored very high marks in independent tyre tests recently conducted by two of Europe’s top motoring magazines – Germany’s ADAC motorwelt and the Russian publication Za Rulem.

ADAC Motorwelt, a magazine with a monthly print one of 13.8 million copies, tested two strong-selling sizes, 175/65R14 T and 195/65R15 V, and of the 18 makes of tyre on trial only four obtained the top three star rating of ‘highly recommendable’ – the new Kumho Solus KH17 (due to reach the UK market later this year), the Pirelli Cinturato P4, the Continental EcoContact3 and the Fulda Eco Control. The magazine bought the tyres without the manufacturers’ knowledge and subjected them to a range of rigorous challenges. They evaluated driving stability, handling, braking and noise performance in the dry and carried out additional braking, aquaplaning, handling and cornering tests in wet conditions.

Second Tyrexpo Africa Grows in Stature

The second Tyrexpo Africa exhibition has been voted a success by exhibitor companies who, according to exhibition organisers, welcomed an increased number of industry buyers and delegates to Johannesburg’s Sandton Centre at the beginning of March. Exhibiting for the second time at the show, Stamford Tyres European trading division – Sumo Firenza reported a successful show with particular interest being shown in the Firenza range of tyres by visitors from both Africa and throughout the world.

Independently audited figures released by show organiser ECI International confirm a healthy six per cent increase in visitor numbers, up to 2,478 compared to the inaugural event in 2006 130 exhibitors occupied around 5,000 sq.m of exhibition space in the Sandton Convention centre, with a 40/60 split between domestic southern African suppliers and those from overseas. China, with 35 individual exhibitors, was the major presence, heading a truly international line-up made up of more than 60 different countries.

Avon Tyres Supply British GT for Third Year

Avon Tyres celebrated the launch of the company’s third season as control tyre supplier to British GT racing at the beginning of March. Tyres & Accessories met Avon Motorsport sales and marketing manager, Roger Everson; and development manager, Mike Lynch, at Silverstone and found out how the Cooper Tire Europe division’s involvement in the series and motorsport in general has grown over the last 25 years.

Avon’s British GT supply contract means the manufacturer has been involved in races that have seen Aston Martin DBRS9, Ferrari 430 and Dodge Vipers battling similar 500bhp machines at a number of UK racing circuits. This year race organisers have introduced a new GT4 category based more closely on production models than the specifically race-designed GT3 machines that make up the bulk of the series.

“Last year’s championship was fantastic as it went down to the final round, and 2008 looks set to be even better,” said Julian Baldwin, managing director of Cooper Tire Europe. “As well as a good entry of GT3 cars already signed up to fight for the overall title, there has been a lot of interest in the GT4 category, both from new and existing teams. It all helps to add even more evocative sports cars to the grid and showcase our products in the most spectacular way.”

The 2007 championship was won by Bradley Ellis and Alex Mortimer, whose Team RPM Dodge Viper narrowly beat the bio-ethanol-powered DBRS9 of Barwell Motorsport’s Jonny Cocker and Paul Rayson. But none of the could have got off the starting grid, let alone win anything, without the right tyres.

Avon Racing (Avon Tyres Motorsport) was founded during the tremendous growth of interest and participation in motorsport that took place in the 1980s. And, according to company representatives, the company was able to “fill a void” in the manufacture, distribution and supply of motorsport tyres left by the other market participants at the time. With this in mind, the business was from the beginning run as a commercial venture. And in order to satisfactorily fulfil the race teams demands for short lead times and great flexibility, the business unit ran separate to, but in parallel with, general passenger car production at what is now Cooper Tire & Rubber Europe at its Melksham headquarters. According to Roger Everson, this decision gives Cooper significant flexibility when it comes to producing high quality racing products without having to satisfy the economic demands that are part and parcel of volume passenger car tyre production. “We are willing to work out programmes with particular customers or special products,” Everson explains referring to a particular project that saw Avon partner with Tyrell in the production of a six-wheeler tyre, based on 10-inch diameter wheels.

The tyre production facilities are based on some of the most modern machinery, adapted for motorsport needs. This however does not mean that the plant is a fully automated facility, instead certain parts of the process still receive the human touch, allowing for the kind of flexible approach that is necessary in this business.

During the earliest days the operation was known as International Race Tyre Services. What you may not know is that at this point a certain Bernie Eccleston had his finger in this motorsport pie. Avon went it alone in 1983, following a strong growth trend in take-up of the company’s motorsport products across the board.

Today the dedicated motorsport tyre production department produces a total range that covers some 400 sizes. Avon Racing’s wide range still supplies bias tyres to certain international markets where these products remain popular. All Formula 3 and national GT races run on radial tyres. In the UK, some classic vehicle series specifically request the kind of authenticity that comes from running on bias tyres. However, race series that feature high power and high down-force vehicles all opt for radial tyres.

Until recently Avon Racing’s speciality had been single-seater lightweight open wheel racing series (Avon supplied the Formula 3000 series, for example, from start to finish), but when the opportunity to enter British GT came along the company job at the chance, stepped up to the challenge and has expanded into this role. Despite it being a quite different series to the open-wheel racing Avon had mostly been involved with before, company representatives told T&A that the development team was able to get up to speed quickly.

Fast moving [non]consumer goods

And they had to. Avon manufactures race tyres as close to race date as possible in order to ensure that customers get fresh, appropriate product. To illustrate the lengths that the 70-strong team goes to: it is not unknown for tyres to arrive at the track still warm from curing process. Now that really is hot off the press!

Having proved its ability to meet the challenges of the GT racing, Avon racing is now looking forward to other potential opportunities. The company is, for example, now in the second year of supplying champ car Atlantic series and the motorsport team manager doesn’t rule out the possibility of even entering NASCAR in the US. Avon representatives say their products proved themselves in ASCAR (the company designed a bespoke tyre from scratch in this instance, with development taking place at Rockingham). So, Cooper is definitely in a position to produce tyres capable of meeting the challenges of NASCAR. “Always looking for new emerging markets to buy our products,” explained Avon Racing sales and marketing manager Roger Everson.

Speaking on the subject of 2008 British GT series, technical manager Mike Lynch summed up the adaptable Avon racing philosophy: “Equivalency is the key change here. We are very confident this will be our best year yet. The tyre is not fixed for the year, as it is in some other series, so we can introduce a new tyre at any point, so long as we give the same to everyone. The key is to be very fair with everyone.”

Bridgestone Greatec Tyres Earn US SmartWay Certification

Bridgestone Firestone North American Tire, LLC (BFNT) announced its Greatec wide base drive and Greatec wide base trailer radials have been added to the EPA SmartWay-certified list of commercial tyres. Besides meeting SmartWay’s fuel efficiency specifications, BFNT says that Greatec radials offer the additional advantage of allowing fleets to increase payloads.

Tyres that earn EPA SmartWay certification must achieve at least three percent better fuel economy than the average new tyre. Last summer, four Bridgestone-brand commercial truck tyres were approved for EPA-certified SmartWay tractors and trailers. The R287 steer, R280 steer, M720 drive and R195F trailer radials – and now Greatec drive and Greatec trailer radials – have earned EPA SmartWay certification.

VTS Testing 2 New Beaded Edge Tyres

Vintage Tyre Supplies is the process of testing two new Waymaster Cord beaded edge tyres. Recognising that beaded edge products are increasing hard to come by, it apparently was an easy decision for the company to begin making its own products for this niche segment. “It seemed quite natural for us to take the brave step and develop our own brand, the,” company representatives reported in a customer newsletter.

The two new tyres currently being tested are: 760 x 90 and 895 x 135, which will soon be added to the range which also includes: 710×90, 810×90, 815×105, and 820×120.

New Michelin Agilis Offers Van Drivers Performance & Economy

In mid-March Michelin unveiled its latest tyre for medium and heavy commercial vehicles, the new generation Agilis range. With certification to equip the Iveco Daily and Renault Master already secured and certification for Citroën, Mercedes and Peugeot currently underway, the replacement market debut sees the new Agilis initially available in 13 sizes. The line-up will be extended to 20 sizes by 2009, by which stage the new tyre will, reports Michelin, cover 95 per cent of the European cargo van segment.

The introduction of the Agilis comes at a time when the utility vehicle market is experiencing rapid growth throughout Europe, reports Michelin. According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association vehicle registrations in the 25 countries of Europe, plus Iceland, Norway and Switzerland, rose by 7.1 per cent in 2007 over the previous year. This represents a total of 2,245,062 registrations last year, versus 2,095,382 in 2006. By comparison, the number of passenger cars increased by 1.1 per cent over the same period. Forecasts show that utility vehicle registrations should continue to rise at least until 2009.

TyreSafe Says Motorcycle Safety Leaflet Proving Popular

Since the start of the first ever Bike Tyre Safety Month, which extends throughout the month of March, TyreSafe has witnessed a surge in the popularity of its “Motorcycle Tyres and Your Safety” leaflet, one of several information guides on tyre safety downloadable from the TyreSafe website. In February alone, there were nearly 2,000 downloads, highlighting the fact that the TyreSafe online portal, launched in January 2007, has now become an importance resource for the motoring and motorcycling public.

The motorcycle tyre safety leaflet provides essential information to bikers on the different types of motorcycle tyres which are fitted by manufacturers, how to interpret the information on the sidewall of a tyre, and the importance of running with the correct tread depth and pressures. After all, only two very small contact patches connect the rider with the road, therefore maintaining tyres in good condition and using the correct levels of tyre pressure is critical to safety. Furthermore, TyreSafe also warns motorcyclists that in certain European countries it is illegal to use replacement tyres which differ in certain respects from those fitted originally by the vehicle manufacturer.

Tyres Northampton Named Pirelli Performance Centre of Year 2007

Pirelli Tyres has crowned Tyres Northampton as Pirelli Performance Centre (PPC) of the Year for 2007. The award is the culmination of a four month assessment programme which included the PPC technical audit followed by an onsite video “mystery shop.” The PPC technical audit covers a wide spectrum of areas including working practices, standard and maintenance of equipment, housekeeping and tyre/wheel removal procedures. In contrast, the video “mystery shop” focused on the consumer experience and levels of customer service. A tyre dealer gaining PPC status can justifiably claim to be amongst the most professional in the UK as expectations are high and audit standards stringent.

Pirelli Tyres Top Which? Test

It was double success for Pirelli recently, when the Pirelli Cinturato P4 and the Pirelli P6 achieved the highest scores in the 2008 Which? magazine tyre test. Which? tested two sizes of tyre: 175/65 R14T, typically fitted to superminis, for which the Pirelli Cinturato P4 was the overall test winner and 195/65 R15V, fitted to popular medium/large cars, where the Pirelli P6 achieved the joint highest score. The tests consisted of seven disciplines; dry braking, dry handling, wet braking, wet grip (straight), wet grip (bend), wear, noise and eco rating. Each tyre performed well across all disciplines, resulting in Pirelli being awarded the Which? “Best Buy” status for both sizes.
