Bridgestone Present Green – Literally – F1 Tyres

Following the addition of reflective painted strips on the company’s extreme-wet and super-soft tyres at the Singapore Formula One night race, Bridgestone has announced that its rubber at the Japanese Grand Prix in Fuji will contain green-painted grooves to show its support for the Make Tyres Green campaign.

Ferrari and McLaren’s drivers, who were at the launch alongside with their Make Tyres Green tyre-shod cars, were full of praise for the initiative. Felipe Massa said that it was good that drivers “in the public limelight” could promote the movement and that Formula One “should try to lead by example with energy efficient systems.” Lewis Hamilton added that, “the messages of the campaign help to show us that we can all choose to drive in a greener way… The new Make Cars Green tyre that all the teams will be running on in Fuji is a great way to promote the campaign and a real first for Formula One. The sport can also help in other ways, especially with the launch of new energy efficient technologies next season.”

NTDA Awarded TyreSafe Awareness Prize

Tyresafe has given the National Tyre Distributors Association its tyre safety award for the NTDA’s contribution to raising public awareness of the importance of tyre safety. The NTDA was recognised for its contribution British Tyre Manufacturer’s Association (BTMA) Tyre Industry Dinner in Solihull on 26th September 2008. Rob Beddis, chairman of TyreSafe, presented the TyreSafe award to NTDA chairman Peter Gaster. The NTDA says that the award is a tribute to the association’s hard work and commitment to keeping Britain’s motorists safe on the roads.

“The NTDA has made a significant contribution to raising awareness of the importance of tyre safety and are worthy recipients of the TyreSafe award,” said Beddis. “NTDA members have given their full support to Tyre Safety Month, and have also been rigorous in running their own tyre safety campaigns, notably the recent tyre ageing campaign held in conjunction with the RAC Foundation, which reached out to motorists via TV, radio and press to raise awareness of the dangers of driving on over-aged tyres.”

Goodyear Launches 5 New Tyres to Meet Transport Industry Needs

At September’s IAA International Commercial Vehicle Show in Germany, Goodyear presented five new tyre sizes it believes provide important solutions to the transport industry’s constantly evolving demands. In particular, Goodyear says it has addressed new trends in trailer design, which have been brought about by technological evolution and changing customer requirements. Disc brakes have improved, resulting in a greater demand for them. Operators also want the lowest possible chassis heights and ‘special transport’ trailers with 12 tonnes axle load capacity at 80 km/h.

Heuver Offers new Aeolus Mega-Trailer Tyres

Aeolus, a Chinese tyre manufacturer, recently introduced a new series of mega-trailer tyres, which are now making a strong impression on the company’s market position. Since the introduction, this specific series of tyres has been filling a need in the market, as is evident from the sales statistics of its European importer, Heuver Tyrewholesale. With the Dutch wholesaler’s support – in evidence in the company’s roadshow event following the Hanover Messe event – Aeolus hopes to achieve major brand status in the coming years. A promotional bus will visit current and potential customers to demonstrate different products from Aeolus Tyres. The road show was set up to further increase brand awareness and to inform customers about the products.

Bike Tyrestore Promises “Best Trade Service”

Motorcycle tyre wholesale is a highly specialised job with relatively few players and only a handful of large operators. One of the leaders in the field is Birmingham-based national wholesaler, Bike Tyrestore, an assertion confirmed by the presentation to the company of the 2008 “Best Trade Service” award from a leading two-wheel trade magazine.

Company MD, Peter Smith, explains that the award recognised the best trade service across the whole of the motorcycle industry, not just amongst tyre suppliers, although, he says, “tyres are all we do.” Smith also explains that, unlike some in the marketplace, BTS is 100 per cent trade dedicated and has no retail arm.

This bike tyre wholesaler has always been at the forefront of the industry with a number of firsts, including a freephone customer service number, “YOUR Online Warehouse” where customers can view live stock and pricing data and place orders directly into the BTS Call Centre computers, and a customer loyalty rewards programme, aptly named “Moto-Vate.”

BTS acknowledges that relationships with leading tyre manufacturers are an important part of the package. The firm was not only the first UK importer of replacement product from the now market leader, Bridgestone – whose major UK trading partner they remain in the two wheel product sector – but has become additionally a crucial part of “Moto-Europe;” a forward-looking new business programme from Michelin.

As the catalyst between manufacturers and motorcycle dealers, BTS knows that it needs to excel in communication, offering a lively and daily-updated website, a weekly e-newsletter, and a field sales force available to call on customers nationwide.

Together with the leading manufacturers, notably Bridgestone, Michelin and Avon to date, BTS arranges free track day events where customers can enjoy the freedom of riding at major circuits, while trying out some of the latest rubber. The French tyre giant recently supplied their Pilot Power 2CT and Power Race free of charge to a group of more than 40 riders at Oulton Park.

Peter Smith told us that, “these days, motorcycle dealers hold very small tyre stocks, for reasons both economic and operational. The reality is that motorcycle tyre buyers plan the event, perhaps to coincide with a service appointment, so there is plenty of time to discuss riding style and tyre expectations beforehand. On the basis that the choice of quality motorcycle rubber is so vast that it’s impossible for a dealer or bike tyre specialist to stock everything, it makes sense to rely on the next day delivery offered by BTS as standard.”

Despatching at least 1,000 tyres every working day, BTS has a fully automated system designed to provide this next day service. Operator input is required to confirm an order, whether received on the freephone number or arriving online. The rest of the job is down to that system, which prompts for labels and picking notes, so that the half-dozen vehicles collecting on behalf of the onward carrier are always full within minutes.

Enthusiastic bikers

On the subject of BTS’s customer base, Smith knows that the vast majority of riders are enthusiasts and, even in difficult times for the economy, they will find a few pounds to spend on their pride and joy. So despite all the economical doom and gloom, BTS sales are well up on last year and never a day passes without a number of new accounts being opened, with most new customers approaching the company following personal recommendation.

One factor which can certainly be explained by economic downturn is the huge expansion in scooter tyre sales, as commuters move from four wheels to two. Rumour has it that in certain parts of the country, notably London, good used scooters cannot be found “for love nor money,” Smith quips.

“We’ve certainly bucked the trend this year”, he states. “With good growth in an otherwise stagnant market the only thing that holds us back is the weather; only farmers and the bike tyre industry are so completely weather-dependant. Ask me about prospects for 2009 and I can say that I am completely optimistic, confident in our relations with the main manufacturers and looking at an expanding customer base. But we do need a warm spring to get bikers out on the road, and a long hot summer to keep them there!”

Important online presence

“YOUR Online Warehouse” is a free of charge service, available to everyone with a BTS Trade
Account and accessed through the company’s website. The, if you will, e-nitiative has – according to the company – been taken up with enthusiasm by a large percentage of the customer base. Working on a number of levels, it allows the dealer or distributor to trade 24/7 at their own convenience and be able to make a sale quickly, with secure information as to what is in stock and how much it costs. In a year when rising costs have forced producers to raise prices several times, paper catalogues tend to become out of date within days of publication. “Not so, online!” states Smith.

He continues, “Our weekly e-newsletter is a powerful tool as is the database it gives us. Anything we need to make our customers aware of can be communicated instantly, and the website at
www.worldofbiketyres.com is a daily news section along with “Features”, including product reviews, pictures of some “World of Bike Tyres” people and events, video entertainment, a special offers area and a zone dedicated to reporting the action within Bridgestone Motorsport.

Popular brands

As for Bridgestone’s market share, Bike Tyrestore reports that Bridgestone continues to exercise domination of the UK two wheel replacement tyre business, but competition is heating up between other premium bands, Michelin having achieved remarkable growth during the last two years. As for more specialist customer interests, BTS says that MotoGP has largely driven the technological development of both these manufacturer’s products with “Transfer Technology” being the philosophy both in Japan and France. Dunlop has a large traditional following to compliment similarly high-tech rubber and, along with Pirelli/Metzeler, is a specific choice for a lot of “hypersports” riders. Avon and Continental are consistent selections, while Sava – the only manufacturer producing scooter tyres exclusively in Europe – has gone from strength to strength since appointing BTS as its sole UK Trade Distributor a couple of years ago. There are newer players too, not least Maxxis, which Smith predicts will be a force to be reckoned with before long.

So, faced with a sometimes confusing range of high performance products, many machine or style-specific, and customers who are knowledgeable and interested in the available products – unlike, Smith notes, the many car-owners for whom a tyre is a “distress purchase” – BTS’ Peter Smith offers a one-stop solution: “A motorcycle tyre wholesaler, which can provide advice and technical support, ideally run by bikers, which carries the stock and delivers the goods, while offering levels of customer service and return value, like “Moto-Vate” and our Track Event programme.”

Car Ownership Becoming a Love/Hate Relationship

With more vehicles per capita than our European counterparts, some people have romantically described the UK as a nation of car lovers. However, according to a survey carried out by GfK NOP in conjunction with Nationwide Autocentre, it appears that Britain’s love affair with cars is dwindling, with nearly 30 per cent of men and 20 per cent of women now actually resenting their vehicles.

Rising fuel costs and road tax (74 and 53% respectively) were cited as the main reason for the ill feeling. However, those in the tyre industry will be interested to hear learn that 39 per cent of motorists resent their car due to its environmental impact more than even the congestion charge. In addition to the growing trend towards smaller new car sizes, it seems that economical tyres are also likely to grow in popularity – 50 per cent of the country is spending money on essentials like food and clothing instead of maintaining their vehicles.

Continental Industrial Tyres Warns Against Wrong Fitments

Speaking at the Fork Lift Truck Association’s (FLTA) Safety Conference on 25 September, Continental Industrial tyres warned against incorrect fitments and poor maintenance of tyres on industrial vehicles. Industrial vehicles have evolved over the past 20 years, becoming faster, more powerful and being worked harder than ever before. These advancements mean that higher demands are being put on the vehicles only contact with the road, making good tyre selection all the more important.

Gary Banks from Continental Industrial tyres explained why: “Tyres are an essential part of the forklift truck and if the wrong tyres are fitted or the tyres are not maintained properly then this can have serious consequences both on running costs and fleet safety…It is important that the right choice is made when fitting Industrial tyres to your forklifts, especially when lifting heavy loads and when loads have to be raised to a great height.

eTyres Seeking New Franchisees

At the time of going to press, the US government failed to back President Bush’s $700 billion bailout plan and banks seemed to be dropping like flies. With the UK economy inevitably affected by the knock-on effect of the credit crunch starting your own virtual business may seem like scary thing to do. However, if you did want to start up an online mobile tyre franchise, etyres reports that it has the consumer hook of charging up to 40 per cent less than the leading tyre depots.

However, some areas of the country are not yet covered so etyres is looking to expand its franchise. “Everyone wants to save money on essential purchases like car tyres,” says Tony Bowman, managing director of etyres, adding: ” Even though we have over 70 franchisees across the country we still have some key areas available and are looking to fill these. Priority locations include Manchester, South East London, Southampton and Liverpool.”

Tyre Inflation Message Still Ignored, Says TyreSafe

The message is still not getting through, says TyreSafe. Motorists are continuing to place their own lives, as well as those of passengers and other road users at risk by ignoring the dangers of incorrect tyre inflation. As Tyre Safety Month gets underway, the safety organisation has reported on Department for Transport statistics showing that illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres were a contributory factor in the death of 43 motorists in 2007, and played a part in a further 984 accidents.

Conti Winter Tyres Well-Rated in Tests

Continental reports that its tyres have faired very well in a number of winter tests. Specifically, experts from the Germany’s ADAC automotive association, from the Stiftung Warentest consumer reporting institute, from the ÖAMTC (the Austrian Automobile, Motorcycle and Touring Club), from the TCS (the Swiss Touring Club) and from two of Germany’s leading motoring magazines, “AutoBild” and “auto motor und sport” compared the ContiWinter-Contact TS 800, TS 810 and TS 830 against over sixty competitive tyres. The result of this host of tests, reports Conti, was glowing: All Continental products received the highest ratings assigned – “highly recommended”, “exemplary” or “good”. Furthermore, each of the test committees emphasised Continental’s position with regard to safety-relevant criteria and performance on wet roads.

Dunlop Aircraft Tyres to Supply Fast Growing Turkish Carrier

The decision by Pegasus, Turkey’s fastest growing airline, to double its fleet with the purchase of 24 new Boeing 737-800 aircraft has been well received at Dunlop Aircraft Tyres. The Birmingham based operation has been selected to supply tyres for the new airliners.

“The news that Pegasus Airlines is doubling the size of its Boeing 737-800 fleet is positive for the company and our workforce in Birmingham,” said Dunlop Aircraft Tyres’ chairman, Ian Edmondson. “Tyres made at our site in Erdington are among those fitted to the fleet by a company in Turkey that carries out maintenance, repair and overhaul to the aircraft.”

Tyre Slasher Ordered to Knit Jumpers as Recompense

Local yob youths in malicious tyre shredding frenzy? Nope. Teenage punks slash defenceless parked cars in drug-crazed rampage? Not even close. Forget the community rag hyperbole, tyre terror recently took on a very different shape and form…

In the German city of Kaiserslautern, an 89-year-old woman has been told to take up knitting as a means of avoiding prosecution for slashing more than 50 tyres. This news was delivered by prosecutor Helmet Bleh, the man faced with the unenviable task of presenting the case against the senior slasher. “We’ll drop the case if she knits a few pullovers,” Bleh said sagely. “We can’t send her to prison, and she doesn’t have the money to pay a fine.”
