Pirelli Announces Guaranteed Casing Allowance on New 01 Series Tyres

Pirelli has announced that, for a limited period, it will offer selected fleets a guaranteed casing allowance. The move is designed to demonstrate that Pirelli’s end-user partners can rely on the company’s truck tyres being guaranteed against any manufacturing defects from cradle to grave and then onto a second retreaded life. According to the company, “Pirelli’s confidence in the sheer quality of its new R01 Regional product lines and the ST01 Trailer fitment will ultimately be translated into extremely high retread casing acceptability and then prolonged second lives.”

Indian Anti-Dumping Body Recommends Hefty TBR Duty

The Press Trust of India writes that the country’s government is “likely” to implement an anti-dumping duty on bus and truck radials imported from China and Thailand. The Commerce Ministry’s Directorate General of Anti-dumping and Allied Duties (DGAD), it reports, has recommended a US$90 duty per tyre.

Dexel Tyres Joins ContiNetwork

Dexel Tyres has been appointed as a partner in Continental Tyres’ national dealer network, ContiNetwork. Director Glyn Cainey says that he is delighted to be representing Continental Tyres in the area: “Continental is a highly regarded brand with excellent products at competitive prices which are becoming increasingly in demand from discerning operators keen to cut their annual tyre bill. When these high mileage tyres are managed using the ContiLifecycle five-stage process, costs can be cut by as much as 25 per cent over the lifetime of a tyre.”

Fuel Economy Takes Centre Stage As VW Launches 80.7 mpg Polo

Volkswagen has released its latest Polo BlueMotion, an 80.7 mpg fuel economy wonder, to order from Volkswagen Retailers. Prices start at £14,445 on the road, but the main news is the fuel economy and its subsequent low emissions.

The new Polo BlueMotion features a new 1.2-litre TDI three-cylinder common rail diesel engine offering 75 PS, and 133 lbs ft (180 Nm) of torque available from 2,000 rpm. The new engine, combined with longer gearing through the five-speed manual gearbox, regenerative braking and an automatic start/stop system, help the new Polo BlueMotion emit just 91 g/km of CO2 while returning an impressive 80.7 mpg on the combined cycle. This grants the new Polo BlueMotion a theoretical range of over 800 miles on one tank of diesel.

According to the e-tailer’s website, the company’ s communications and promotion manager covered over 1000 miles in five days, visiting selected Tesco stores. His objective was to introduce the company to Tesco Staff, while delivering A5 fliers, putting up posters and checking air pump advertising fascias which had been put up the previous week.

Analysts Increase Michelin Share Price Target Following Second Half Results

In the wake of financial results that Michelin characterised as being “more agile than ever,” financial analysts have raised their price targets for the tyre manufacturer by 7 euros from 29 to 36 euros. The Morgan Stanley analysts wrote in their investors note that they had upped estimates from the 2010 to 2011 earnings per share from 3.15 to 4.30 and 3.90 to 4.76 respectively. At the same time they issues a new 2012 earnings per share prediction of 5.98 euros.

Four Additional Yokohama Tyres Earn SmartWay Verification

Four more North American market Yokohama commercial vehicle tyres have been added to the US Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay list of verified fuel-saving technologies for tyres. This brings the number to seven of Yokohama products that are recognised as SmartWay "low rolling resistance tyres." SmartWay Transport, a collaboration between the EPA and the freight sector, is designed to improve energy efficiency and energy scrutiny, and reduce greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions.

Michelin Interested in Showing Eco-Characteristics in Formula One

Reports starting with Bloomberg suggest that Michelin is seeking ways to re-enter Formula One on the condition that the tyres’ ability to affect fuel consumption positively. Jean-Dominique Senard, a Michelin managing partner, said that the company was in “formal discussions” with the FIA, telling Bloomberg that the company’s ability to supply the sport’s tyres would hinge upon new rules to show the ecological benefits tyre technology can achieve – one of the mainstays of Michelin’s corporate message.

Apollo Tyres Pulls Out of Mission 2018

Apollo has ended its key sponsorship deal of India’s quest to find the country’s first tennis Grand Slam singles champion by 2018. A statement issued by the company praised the “stellar performances” of the children taken on by the programme, and said the decision to end its sponsorship was “regrettable” and “extremely unfortunate”, according to The Hindu in India.

Strathclyde Tyres Wins Exel Scotland Contracts Supported by Cameo

Tyre supplier Strathclyde Tyres has won the West Dunbartonshire and South Lanarkshire local authority Exel contracts. Strathclyde reports that the use of Cam Systems’ Cameo software platform has assisted Strathclyde’s account management and reporting, allowing it to develop its communication with customers. Cameo provides a foundation line-of-business application suite for tyre wholesalers and retailers. Debbie Tracey, manager at Strathclyde Tyres says: “Our partnership with Cam Systems has enabled us to improve the way in which we manage accounts and streamline our reporting process. This has allowed us to improve the way we communicate with our clients and, in turn, make us more marketable. We selected Cam as we had been looking for a software package which is specifically built to meet our needs and have been impressed with the increased visibility it has given our company.” Cameo reportedly helped to increase visibility across its two divisions – private and commercial – provided by Cam Systems, the leading software solutions provider to the independent tyre industry.

Dunlop Aircraft Tyres Signs First China Agreement

A three-year deal for the supply of bias tyres will see Taiwan based Mandarin Airlines become the first customer to utilise Dunlop Aircraft tyres’ new distribution and retreading facility in China. Dunlop Taikoo (Jinjiang) Aircraft Tyres Company Limited will supply tyres for the airline’s fleet of eight E-190/195 twin-engine medium range jets.

Michelin to Field Aromatic Oil-Free Race Tyres at Le Mans

This year’s Le Mans 24 Hours, the 78th running of the famous endurance race, takes place on 12 and 13. Michelin says the weekend event will mark a new step in the firm's “commitment to protecting the environment”. The French tyre major’s participation in the Le Mans 24 Hours will, it says, feature an all-new range of eco-friendly tyres. In addition, Michelin will organise, for the second time, the "Michelin Green X Challenge" which has now become an integral part of the regulations that govern the discipline.

Continental RoadAttack Bike Tyre Sequel Available Now Through Cambrian Tyres

Distributor Cambrian Tyres has announced that it has introduced the ready to ride Continental RoadAttack 2 to its range. The latest bike product from the German tyre manufacturer is its first tyre to offer complete riding safety as soon as it is fitted, according to Conti. The ContiRoadAttack 2 is available now from Cambrian Tyres, coinciding with the start of the 2010 season. Continental will be producing the tyre in six front sizes and seven for the rear (see below). Approvals have already been obtained for over 250 bikes (from manufacturers including BMW, Honda, Kawasaki and Yamaha).

Off-Road Tour Company Selects Cooper Discoverer STT tyres

All Terrain Tours, an off-road tour company (as the name suggests) has chosen Cooper’s Discoverer STT tyres for use in the Northern English countryside. Started earlier this year by Tony Newton and Mark Langley, All Terrain Tours allows owners of off-road vehicles to use them away from asphalt roads on legally accessible “green lanes”, with prices starting at around £45. Langley’s Land Rover Defender and Newton’s Land Rover Discovery will have the Cooper tyres fitted as they lead tours across some of England’s most remote and beautiful countryside. The company promotes safe and responsible use of four-wheel drive vehicles in the countryside, with routes available for most 4x4s.
