Al Dobowi Group chairman Surender Singh Kandhari’s spoke on “the emergence of budget tyres” at the recent Automechanika Middle East his argument that there is no such thing as a bad tyre may have raised some eyebrows, but it certainly got the audience thinking. Falken Tyres’ mixed 24 hours at the Nürburgring

With a huge contingency of auto- and tyre manufacturers and a crowd estimated to be close to a quarter of a million, this year’s ADAC Nürburgring 24 hour race was won by Manthey-Racing – the works team’s fifth in the last six years – as Marc Lieb, Timo Bernhard, Romain Dumas and Lucas Luhr drove the team’s Porsche 911 GT3 RSR to victory, completing a record 156 laps (3958.968km) of the Nordschleife. Tyre manufacturer and main sponsor of the event, Falken Tyre Europe – a company inaugurated in 2009 to distribute the Sumitomo-manufactured brand in the continent – also ran a highly competitive Porsche 911 GT3 R with its own team in the event, and while a change of engine and gearbox made for ultimate disappointment in terms of its finishing position, persistent top ten lap times meant the team occupied positions between 176 and 14 during the course of the 24 hours, eventually finishing 48th. Falken also supplied specially developed tyres to its eponymously named team.

Treadsetters celebrates another record year

Treadsetters may not have been the ultimate winner of the HSBC competition (see "Treadsetters mentioned in HSBC annual report") , but it really is true – winning isn’t everything. The company took the opportunity through the competition to focus more on its business direction and the increased awareness that has been generated both internally and externally has resulted in some clearly positive outcomes for the firm. While the final figures for 2010/2011 have not been audited or published, with sales exceeding the £42 million mark, it was clear that the company was going to be at least 20 per cent ahead of its £35 million target for the year”

Talking winter tyres in the desert with Deldo

With temperatures ranging between 39 and 47’C during the week of this year’s Automechanika Middle East, Dubai might seem like a bizarre place to talk about winter tyres, but that’s the position Tyres & Accessories found itself in during a conversation with Deldo Autobanden NV’s international sales and marketing manager, Rutger Veerman. In addition there was also news of a new Deldo private brand tyre.

But first the winter tyres. According to Veerman, 2011 is the first year the well-known Belgian tyre wholesaler has pre-sold winter tyres to distributors in the UK. Sales of the ironically cold weather products are also said to be booming in general with many companies across Europe failing to get enough stock during the last winter season.

TyreSafe supports MOT campaign

TyreSafe has become the latest motoring body to come out in support of maintaining current MOT frequency along with other road safety organisations such as the AA and consumers Association “Which”. Tyre Safe pointed out that over 2 million MOT failures annually are attributed to illegal tyres and any extension would lead to thousands of cars running around on our roads with unsafe, and in some cases dangerous tyres.

In a fact sheet published today and sent to Tyres & Accessories, TyreSafe outlined its position: “Tyres are safety critical items which constantly wear with vehicle use and it is imperative that they are regularly inspected and properly maintained. As many motorists rely on their annual MOT for the inspection of their tyres, any extension or lengthening of the MOT frequency is likely to have a significant detrimental effect upon driver and road safety. For these reasons TyreSafe does not support any extension to the frequency of the MOT test.”

Cooper Avon range supplying “strong demand” for mid-range UHP tyres

The high performance segment’s continued importance in Europe at a time when price consciousness is at a premium gives Cooper Avon’s brands an opportunity. Representatives of the company told Tyres & Accessories that: “The performance tyre sector of the market continues to be a core part of the brand strategy for Cooper and Avon. There is still a very strong demand from UK and European customers for products that deliver optimum grip and performance but at a less than premium price. Our commitment to this sector is illustrated by the development and introduction this March of the brand new Avon ZZ5 tyre. This is a UHP product that has been designed and manufactured in Europe for European roads and conditions… As another indication of Cooper’s commitment to the market, the Avon ZZ5 was also developed and tested on some of Europe’s most challenging roads and race circuit, including the famous Nürburgring, to help to ensure excellent high-speed durability.” The tyre will receive an official launch later in the year, but is currently available on the UK market, where it is also manufactured.
