Seasonal Tyres, TPMS Keep Inflation Under Control

This week Canadians are being reminded to “be smart” about tyres. A national safety awareness campaign, Be Tire Smart Week, began on May 17, and to mark the occasion the Rubber Association of Canada (RAC) has released a nationwide study that shows Canadian drivers are getting the message about the importance of correct tyre inflation and maintenance upon road safety, fuel efficiency and environmental protection. This study shows that the number of private vehicles running on improperly inflated tyres has fallen dramatically since 2003.

Earthmover Tyres to Show Tire Monitor System at Hillhead

Earthmover Tyres is to introduce its Tire Monitor System (TMS) to the UK at this year’s Hillhead show (22 – 24 June). Designed and supplied by AM Bromley, a company formed in 1997 by engineers who worked on the early concepts of tyre pressure monitoring systems, this wireless tyre pressure gauge and monitoring system has been developed for large off-road vehicles. TMS provides tyre pressure and temperature data to allow tyres to be maintained for optimal performance, reducing downtime and increasing productivity. The show will be held at Tarmac’s Hillhead Quarry, near Buxton, in Derbyshire. According to the organisers, it is recognized as “the world’s largest.”

Chevrolet Cruze Eco to Roll on Goodyear

At the New York Auto Show, Chevrolet unveiled a new, 40mpg addition to next year’s Cruze model range, the Cruze Eco. And Goodyear reports that the new model, when it hits US showrooms in the fourth quarter of 2010, will be fitted with its Assurance Fuel Max tyres in a 17-inch wheel diameter as standard. This latest news follows earlier announcements from the US of the tyre also being chosen as the exclusive fitment for the 2011 Chevrolet Volt, and for the 2010 Toyota Prius and 2010 Ford Fusion S.

Australian Magazine Recommends Maxxis Bighorn 4×4 Tyre

Australian 4×4 magazine 4WD Action judged the Maxxis Bighorn MT-762 to be the best tyre in its recent mud tyre review. 4WD Action tested 11 tyres over five terrains to determine the best type of ‘all round’ tyre for 4×4 drivers. The 265/75R16 Bighorn emerged in equal second place overall, gaining high scores in the sand, hill climb and swerve tests, and was especially impressive in the mud. “Mud is definitely what this tyre was made for, with no clogging evident. It easily drove the bog hole at low speed the first time, scoring it a perfect 10/10,” the review reported.

Best Tyres Joins ContiNetwork

Best Tyres has become a partner in Continental Tyres’ national dealer network, ContiNetwork. Best Tyres operates its ContiNetwork partnership from the company’s well-equipped depot in Sandyford, Stoke-on-Trent, which is completely focussed on the commercial vehicle sector. The family-run business also has a retail depot at nearby Cobridge, which supplies tyres for cars and vans.

Paul Byrne, who set up Best Tyres in 2003, says he is delighted to be representing Continental Tyres in the area. “Continental has made a considerable investment in their tyre technology in recent years resulting in the launch of some excellent new products during 2009. They are clearly making their presence felt in the commercial vehicle sector and we are pleased to be contributing to that success.

Cleansing Service Group Choose Big D Tyres from Bandvulc

Waste management specialist Cleansing Service Group (CSG), one of the UK waste industry’s fastest growing companies, has been fitting Bandvulc tyres to its fleet “for some months.” CSG engineering manager Mick Arnold commented: “We have been fitting Bandvulc tyres to a number of our vehicles and the ‘BIG D’ tyre is proving to be a good choice, particularly when used on vehicles going to landfill sites. An important bonus is the environmental benefit by fitting retreads rather than newly manufactured tyres.”

Apollo Tyres to Raise Prices in June

Apollo Tyres has confirmed it will increase tyre prices again by 4 per cent in June after already hiking prices by 3.5 per cent on 1 May, reports Tire Review. The company cited increases in natural rubber and crude oil costs as the reason for the successive price hikes. Citing similar input cost pressures, Apollo had increased prices 2 per cent to 4 per cent in April and 3-5 per cent in January.

Michelin Releases Porsche Cayenne Specialist Tyres

Michelin has launched three new ranges of tyres designed and homologated to fit the new Porsche Cayenne. While Michelin’s continuing branding and product development pursuit of ecological savings seems to chime oddly with the SUV, Porsche’s latest strategy, which it calls “Porsche Intelligent Performance”, involves manufacturing vehicles that deliver enhanced performance while also consuming less fuel and are therefore more efficient and less polluting. This strategy, the French giant explains, “corresponds perfectly with Michelin’s strategy of designing and producing tyres that provide the most balanced performance.” Michelin says its tyres, “especially those that will be fitted on the new Porsche Cayenne, are designed for superior performance in terms of safety-enhancing grip as well as fuel-efficiency and total mileage”.

Vipal to Present Fuel Saving “ECO” Retreads

Vipal has announced that the company will launch a new range of fuel saving retreading products at Reifen, 2010. The new treads, named ECO reportedly form part of Vipal’s Transport Sustainability Project. According to the company, these are products that go “far beyond the savings from retreading: they also contribute for the environment and for the success of the transport activity.”

After fuel tyres represent the second highest product cost for the transport sector. “This is why we heavily invest in technology in order to produce treads that can help to reduce operational costs besides offering quality and safety. Furthermore, we have most recently achieved another pioneering landmark: we developed the first fuel-saving tread lines”, highlights João Carlos Paludo, CEO of Vipal.

Marangoni Promotes Marix Retreaded Tyres’ Zero Oil Compounds

Marangoni is promoting the green benefits of its Marix ecology range of retreaded clean oil 4×4 tyres, with the launch of the new Panther four-season studdable tyre, bringing the total number of lines in the range to nine.

According to company representatives, “mobility off the road and protection of the environment are aspects that are seemingly – yet only seemingly – incompatible.” As a result the Marix Panther features the combination of a studrable tread, zero (aromatic) oil compound, non-directional tread pattern with “very low noise and good driving comfort” and Q, S and T speed ratings (approved for up to 160, 180 and 190 km/h respectively).

S&H Tyres Signs Zeetex Distribution Deal with Kossen BV

S&H Tyres BV has signed a contract with Kossen BV to exclusively distribute the company’s Zeetex truck and bus tyre range in Western Europe. According to S&H representatives, the company has more knowledge in PCR, UHP and SUV tyres than in the truck tyre sector, leading to the decision to choose “a trustful and respectful distributor in this field.”

Multistrada Reports Record Domestic Sales

PT Multistrada Arah Sarana Tbk, the Indonesian tyre manufacturer, reportedly achieved record tyre sales in the first quarter of 2010. Local news sources quoted “a source familiar with the matter” as saying Multistrada sold 1.5 million passenger car tyres in the first three months of 2010, with motorcycle tyres sales totally over 600,000 units. These figures are more than fifth up on the same period last year when the company sold 1.2 million of car tyres and half as many motorbike tyres (300,000 units). Multistrada produces the Achilles, Corsa, and Strada brands.

Bridgestone Survey Reveals Cost of Under-Inflated Tyres

Europeans’ concern about the spiralling cost of fuel is being exacerbated by the state of motorists’ tyres according to research conducted by Bridgestone. According to the manufacturer, four billion litres – worth approximately £4.6 billion – of fuel are being wasted every year due to the under-inflated tyres of four in every five motorists. This inadequate tyre care does not just affect motorists’ wallets; the wasted fuel equates to 9.3 million tonnes of unnecessary CO2 emissions, and therefore increases the harm to the environment caused by motoring. The findings come from safety checks carried out on 52,400 cars in 15 E.U countries in 2009.

Goodyear Launches ‘New Generation’ Mixed Service Tyres

At the Bauma show in Munich, Goodyear unveiled the first products in what it describes as being a “brand new generation of mixed service tyres.” The Omnitrac MSS II and Omnitrac MSD II form the foundation products in a range designed specifically to meet the needs of the construction industry and operators who encounter both on and off road conditions. Goodyear comments that the tyres have been developed to deliver users enhanced mileage and traction, along with greater damage protection.
