Olympic Skier Harvests European Tractor Record

Sometimes you just have to do something to prove it can indeed be done. Olympic medallist Giorgio Di Centa may have had this thought in mind as he steered his tractor, a Same Silver3 110, up to a height of 3,175 metres at the Pirovano ski hut in Italy’s Stelvio Pass. Di Centa achieved this unusual goal using CGS manufactured Continental AC70 T agricultural tyres fitted with König snow chains. Upon his arrival, he could warm himself with the thought that he had driven a tractor higher than anyone else in Europe, a feat attested to by the Italian Timekeepers Association (Federazione Italiana Cronometristi). On his way to this dizzying height, Di Centa encountered terrain that varied between paved road, stone and ice.

Should VOSA Call Time on Old Tyres?

The news that Alan Crickmore, a Gloucestershire coroner has written to the Secretary of State for Transport (Rt Hon Philip Hammond MP) calling for a ban on vehicle tyres that are more than 10 years old lends new support to a cause that has been a topic of discussion within the industry for some time. The case Crickmore referred to was the death of Nazma Shaheen, whose Toyota Lucida was travelling northbound along the M5 when a tyre burst and the car clipped a kerb and rolled over, throwing Mrs Shaheen clear of the vehicle on 6 May 2009. Tyre age was said to have precipitated the accident. What stood out for me the first time I read about this case, apart from the tragic circumstances that initially caused the coroner’s involvement, was the fact that this was the first time that a completely non tyre-related party has publically called for an overhaul of the tyre aging rules.

Veyron Tyres Last Just 37 Miles at Top Whack

While everyone else was drooling over the Bugatti Veyron Super Sports’s jaw dropping 267 mph (431 km/h) performance on the BBC’s Top Gear programme last night, Tyres & Accessories was observing the tyre geek angle – at those kinds of speeds even the best tyres simply don’t last very long. During his report, May pointed out that Bugatti engineers had told him the car’s tyres lasted for around 37 miles a speeds of up to 258 mph (414 km/h). At speeds beyond this, however, the tyres’ life expectancy is somewhat more opaque: “Ask an admiral how deep his submarine goes,” Top Gear’s May was told.

Lorenzo Sets Records on Asymmetric Rear at MotoGP US Round

Jorge Lorenzo rode his Fiat Yamaha to a new fastest race time in Round 9 of the 2010 MotoGP Championship on Sunday, tearing around the United States’ Race Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, furthering his lead and seemingly inexorable rise to this season’s title. Tyre supplier Bridgestone was quick to explain the advantage its hard front and softer asymmetric rear slicks had given the field: every rider favoured the softer option asymmetric rear slick tyre which featured the improved medium compound rubber to offer better warm-up performance. “Its increased level of performance at higher temperatures was the reason it was sufficiently durable for race distance even as the track temperature reached 44 degrees,” a Bridgestone statement read.
