Conti: HTL 2 Eco-Plus Offers ‘Top Economy’

The introduction of the new HTL 2 Eco-Plus long-distance trailer tyre sees Continental complete its new tyre product range for international long-distance transport that the firm has been successively launching since 2009. By using a casing and tread pattern that is configured for long-distance transport, this trailer tyre is designed to combine further optimized furl consumption figures with “considerably extended life.” According to the company, Continental’s latest truck offering also complements the HSL 2 steer axle and HDL 2 drive axle tyres that have already been successfully launched. The latest development sees the company add the XL extra load carrying designation to its product line, enabling it to carry heavier axle weights.

Michelin: Political and Economic Instability Slowed UK CV Tyre Recovery

Following the recession of 2008 and 2009, in the most recent part of this year there has reportedly been “an about turn” in market truck tyre demand. However, the commercial vehicle sector’s recovery is said to be much slower in the UK than in Europe. Tyres & Accessories spoke to Michelin UK’s head of marketing – Truck, Earthmover, Martin Covington, who explained how the market’s recent history has been “a very competitive 18 months.”

While Michelin reports that truck tyre volumes in Europe shot up 28.7 per cent during the first half of 2010. The UK market recovery appears to be much more gradual, rising just 6 per cent in the same period. (The niche Republic of Ireland market flew up 42 per cent, but this figure is based on the market’s relatively small volumes rapidly recovering from a low base). “OE has obviously been poor, but replacement hasn’t been as much better as it should have been,” Covington commented, pointing out that economic and political instability hit haulier confidence in the first half of the year. Interestingly (happenstance or not) the market’s return to form appears to have coincided with the formation of the current coalition government following the general election.

Baxters Chooses Continental Forklift Tyres

Baxters, the famous soup maker, has choosen Continental’s SC 20 solid tyre on its fork lift truck fleet at its production and distribution facility in Fochabers. Fitting the SC 20 has reportedly improved safety, cut vehicle downtime and the whole life costs of tyres at the business. According to the company, the new tyres return three times the tyre life expectancy of the firm’s previous brand.

Baxters’ Fochabers production and distribution facility runs 25 Hyster trucks, a mixture of both gas and electric from 1.75 up to 3 tonnes. Trucks are maintained onsite on a three month service cycle by an engineer from Barloworld Handling Ltd.

John Pease, stores and warehouse manager is responsible for the forklifts at the Fochabers plant: “We had been using the standard Original Equipment solid tyres that came fitted to the trucks but they were performing very poorly. Vehicle downtime was excessive which made the operation very costly. Our plant is very demanding, running round the clock but the tyres just weren’t returning the performance that we expect. Tyres were wearing quickly and unevenly and were occasionally chunking leaving trucks unstable and creating a safety issue for both products and trucks.”

Cooper Encourages Staycationers to Inflate Tyres Correctly

Cooper Tire Europe has urged motorists to check tyre pressures at least monthly and before long trips, and to refer to the vehicle manufacturer’s handbook for the correct pressure when travelling fully laden, with the trend for overseas holidays down 15 per cent amongst Britons last year. The company suggests the average family car carrying a full family on holiday will have to transport an additional 201kg in passengers and luggage, compared to the typical ‘driver-only’ car journey. Cooper says many do not realise they need to set their tyre pressures to compensate for the additional load being placed on the tyres in order to reduce the risk of accidents and premature tyre wear.

Interview: Retreading Key to Dunlop Aircraft Tyres Global Expansion

In its centenary year, Dunlop Aircraft Tyres is part of the way through an expansion plan designed to double the size of the company in terms of new tyres made. With a view to achieving this, the company has set up a joint venture in China with the Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company, named Dunlop Taikoo. Before the recession hit the world’s economies, Dunlop AT had planned to set up a similar facility to cater to the North American market; plans that are still very much at the forefront of the current expansion strategy. It has also recently purchased tyre-making and testing equipment from Yokohama Rubber following the Japanese manufacturer’s decision to withdraw from aircraft tyre production at the end of March 2009. The purchase and installation of the equipment at Dunlop’s Fort Dunlop plant has enabled the Birmingham-based company almost immediate access to the Boeing 777 market for example, an aircraft used heavily in domestic flights.

Analysis: Saying All Budget Tyres are Lethal is an Unfair Generalisation

What Car?’s tyre test team make a good point highlighting the differences between some premium and budget products in their recent tyre test. But it appears they went a step too far when they entitled the feature “why budget tyres could kill” lumping the three cheaper products (Arrowspeed, Ovation and Sunew) together in the their final conclusion. It might sound a touch pedantic, but the addition of the word “some” in the headline may have been fairer as this would have avoided generalising about the overall quality of tyres.

It didn’t take long after Tyres & Accessories reported on the tests on our daily e-Newsletter for the manufacturers involved to take up their right to reply. The Korean manufacturer behind Kwik-Fit’s popular Arrowspeed tyre brand arguably has the best case for disputing being tarred with the saw low-budget brush as the Ovation and the Sunew tyres.

Tyre Rubber Filler Manufacturer to Build Asia Eco-Mineral Plant

Fly ash recycling technology firm RockTron has announced it will launch RockTron Asia at the IGEM Conference in Malaysia between 17 and 24 October. Malaysia will provide the British company’s first Asian facility, which will be able to recycle 100 per cent of both fresh and stockpiled coal-fired power station waste (otherwise known as fly ash) through its closed wet system, without any waste stream, according to the company. The processed “eco-minerals” can be used to manufacture tyre rubber filler, as a company representative explains: “RockTron’s product MinTron is a filler for tyre rubber and costs a fraction of the market price (approximately 25-40 per cent less). The amount destined for tyre application is limited to how much a client wishes to order (i.e. it is limitless). Our UK plant at fiddlers ferry is capable of recycling 800,000 tonnes of fly ash and turning it into fillers for rubber in tyres.”

Report: Budget Tyres Could Kill, But at Least They’re Quiet

What Car? has named and shamed budget brands in a test warning that tyres like these “could kill.” In the test published online on 4 August 2010 What Car? measured the performance of the Arrowspeed CP661, Continental Premium Contact 2, Goodyear Optigrip, Michelin Pilot Sport 3, Ovation VI-182 and Sunew YS112 in dry braking, wet braking, lateral grip and noise tests. Despite Challenges, Bridgestone Rides Recovery in H1 2010

For Bridgestone, the first half of the 2010 financial year presented an operating environment “plagued by rising prices for raw materials.” Yet, despite these challenges, the Japanese tyre maker saw signs of a slight recovery in its domestic market plus a gradual recovery in the US and accelerated recovery in Asia and particularly in China. Bridgestone acknowledges that conditions in Europe remain “challenging”, but notes that the business climate there showed signs of bottoming out. In these operating conditions, Bridgestone states that during the six months to June 30, 2010 it stepped up efforts to improve manufacturing productivity, increase sales of highly competitive products, strengthen supply capacity and effectively utilise its management resources.
