Nokian Promotes Safety & Eco Benefits of WR G2

There’s been a nip in the air of late, and Nokian Tyres has recognised this as the perfect time for a reminder that fitting eco winter tyres can help reduce vehicle fuel consumption. “Car drivers even can cut their fuel consumption even by half a litre on 100 kilometres with the environmentally friendly low rolling resistance tyre Nokian WR G2 if the air pressure is right,” commented Teppo Huovila, vice president of R&D at the Finnish manufacturer. “A rolling resistance lowered by 40 per cent saves six per cent fuel.”

CITExpo Organiser Reports a Record Year in 2010

This year the China International Tire Expo – CITExpo for short – once again broke records. The show’s organiser states that the three-day exhibition was visited by more than 7,400 tyre experts. Last year Reliable International Exhibition Services registered the attendance of 6,320 visitors, which means that this year’s CITExpo, the eighth held, enjoyed 17 per cent visitor growth. This year’s numbers also well exceeded the show held in 2008 – before the global crisis – for which only 6,860 visitors made their way to the Shanghai Everbright Convention & Exhibition Center. At this year’s show, 60 per cent of visitors came from various regions throughout China, and the remaining 40 per cent from 92 countries around the world.

TyreSafe Launches iPhone Tyre Pressure App

iPhone users in the UK now have a useful tool to assist with correct tyre pressure inflation at their disposal. As part of October’s Tyre Safety Month, TyreSafe has launched a free iPhone application that provides a manufacturer’s recommended tyre pressure settings in both psi and bar upon entering vehicle registration details.

Stoner Takes Second Straight Victory at Motegi

Ducati Team’s Casey Stoner took his second victory in a row today at Motegi from third on the grid, catapulting himself into an early lead that he never relinquished, despite pressure throughout from pole man Andrea Dovizioso of Repsol Honda who crossed the line in second. In third, Valentino Rossi was victorious in a tooth-and-nail battle with his Fiat Yamaha teammate, Jorge Lorenzo after trading paint in the closing stages of what was the most nail-biting fight of the race.

TyreSafe Releases Video to Illustrate Tyre Test Simplicity

With October’s Tyre Safety Month of October upon us, the organisation behind the initiative, TyreSafe has released a campaign video stressing the simplicity of testing the suitability of tyres. The video, posted on YouTube and embedded in the page below, features 7 year-old faux-mechanics Kyanne and Finlay showing drivers how simple it is to check their tyre tread depth with a 20p coin. The organisation also states that Department for Transport figures published in its latest road casualty report show that more than 200 people were killed or seriously injured (KSI) in the UK in 2009 as a result of an accident where illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres were a contributory factor.

Peter Tye Becomes Goodyear Dunlop UK Retail Director; Heads up HiQ

Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK Ltd has announced the appointment of Peter Tye as retail director, including heading the company’s HiQ tyre and vehicle servicing network. Tye, who was previously franchise development manager, replaces Juergen Titz, who was appointed director of Goodyear Dunlop’s consumer tyre business unit last month.

Peter Tye joined Goodyear Dunlop in 2006 when the company relaunched and revitalised the HiQ brand, its service standards and franchise model. Before joining Goodyear Dunlop, he had 14 years franchising experience, most notably on the Volkswagen Group brands including Audi and Seat.

Bush Tyres Opens Goole Retail Centre

With the opening of a new depot in Goole, near Selby, tyre retail group BA Bush & Son has increased its network of outlets in Lincolnshire, Humberside and East Yorkshire to 17. The family-owned company – whose wholesale arm B.A.B. Distribution is a member of Grouptyre – is continuing its strategy of investing for the future with this new centre, which represents the fourth new Bush Tyres site in the last 18 months.

Driver Chooses Infinity Tyres for Dutch Drifting

Drifting driver Oliver Harrsch recently competed in a round of the Dutch Open Drift Championship held in Kalkar, Germany (held 11 – 12 September) equipped with Infinity tyres. Harrsch was supplied the tyres by Venlo-based Infinity distributor Euro-Tyre and according to the company, the small and technical course was suited to lower powered cars and the more skilled drivers.

On the first day, dry conditions allowed Harrsch to push the Infinity 050 UHP tyres to their limits and to experiment with tyre pressures. He commented: “Lots of grip and very smokey! Infinity are unbelievably good tyres!" In extremely wet conditions on the second day, Oliver took a very commendable fourth position.

European Launch for Bridgestone Ecopia Truck Range

In early September, Bridgestone released its latest European market Ecopia passenger car tyre. The introduction of this environment-oriented product has now been followed up with the European launch of an Ecopia truck tyre range. At the IAA Commercial Vehicle show in Hannover, Germany, Bridgestone Europe CEO Mac Ohashi formally announced the line-up’s debut in our region.

Mitas Tyres on Tractor Drag-Racing Champion

A “New Bufalo” Landini tractor fitted with Mitas 65 series tyres won the classic Italian tractor-pulling contest held in San Pancrazio, near Parma on 12 September 2010. The 14 teams featuring such poetic names as Baby Tornado (second), Cobrabite (fifth) and Speedy (last) met for the 11th time since 1999 to match their power tractors in this “nerves of steel” battle for primacy.

“This extreme tractor sport is electrifying,” said Gaetano Mellia of CGS Pneumatici Italia. CGS Tyres produces Mitas-brand tractor tyres. “Unlike in other sports, the sportsmen compete with end-user machines driving on end-user tyres with the lugs cut off. The tractor’s horsepower preserved by the tyre is one secret ingredient of victory.”

Michelin Becomes 50th Driving for Better Business ‘Champion’

Michelin has become the 50th ‘business champion’ to join government-backed Driving for Better Business campaign. In doing so, the company has committed to help promote at-work driving safety initiatives to other public and private sector fleets. The tyre maker’s involvement with the campaign comes after reducing its road crash rate by more than 50 per cent in the last five years and adopting a target of zero incidents. Michelin says improving safety has helped reduce accident damage costs by 46%. It has also seen significant savings on indirect costs, such as vehicle hire and driver time.

Chinese-made Dmack Tyres to Join Michelin in WRC

Shandong Yongtai Chemical Group Co., Ltd, part of the Yongtai Chemical Group, has become the first Chinese tyre manufacturer to supply a top flight motorsport series after being named as the WRC’s second supplier after tyre giant Michelin was confirmed yesterday. The tyres will be branded Dmack and are aimed at privateer racing crews. The products themselves are being manufactured at Yongtai’s factory in Dongying, China. The plant reportedly produces 22,000 tyres a day for global distribution.

Eurotire Becomes Global PressurePro Distributor

Following the signing of a definitive agreement, Eurotire Inc. has become a global distributor for the PressurePro range of TPMS products produced by Advantage PressurePro. According to Advantage PressurePro, distribution of its TPMS product line is a “natural extension of Eurotire’s focus on providing their mining customers with the OTR tyre service and support tools they need to maximise tyre productivity.” The US headquartered company lists facilities in every continent amongst its worldwide operations.

CGS Tyres Confirms US Plant for Ag Radials

CGS Tyres has today confirmed it will build the production plant for agricultural tyres reported on tyrepress.com over the past two months. A $43.81 million investment will allow the Czech company to build its new plant in Charles City, Iowa. Company representatives and the Iowa Department of Economic Development signed an investment agreement at the Farm Progress Show in Boone, Iowa, marking the end to negotiations that begun in 2009. The company said the plant would create at least 159 new jobs for local residents. Production is scheduled to commence by 1 January, 2012.
