Conti to boost pcr production in Slovakia by almost 50%

On 10 April the head of Continental’s Tire division, Nikolai Setzer, and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico signed a Memorandum of Understanding concerning Continental’s consumer tyre factory in Púchov. The signing of the MoU at Continental’s headquarters in Hannover, Germany paves the way for an expansion project that will see passenger and light truck tyre capacity in Púchov rising by more than 5 million pieces a year.

Kwik Fit director of communications elected NTDA VC

The National Tyre Distributers Association (NTDA) has elected Roger Griggs, director of communications at Kwik Fit, to the role of vice chairman, working with Stephen Callow, who succeeded Kwik Fit’s David White as NTDA chairman in March 2012. Griggs has spent 34 years in the tyre industry, starting in a Jersey tyre centre in the late 1970s. Richard Edy, director of the NTDA, says: “We are delighted that Roger has joined the board. His experience in all areas of the industry means he has a great deal to offer and we look forward to supporting him in developing future campaigns.”

Hankook expands European Technical Centre

Hankook is expanding its Europe Technical Centre (ETC) and will officially inaugurate its new facilities in Hannover this Friday. Hankook’s European R&D focuses on the development of tyres for the European markets as well as original equipment. According to the company, the expansion reflects the growing importance of Hankook’s OE supplies in Europe.

Alcoa introduces 4 new wheels at IAA

Alcoa Wheel Products Europe has introduced four new wheels for truck and trailer applications at the IAA trade show in Hannover, Germany. The fitments comprise: 22.5×11.75”, 45mm offset wheel for inloaders; a 22.5×11.75”, 80mm offset wheel; 22.5×11.75”, 135mm offset and five ton load index; and a 22.5×13.00” lighter wheel with higher load capacity.

Speedline Truck launches new light alloy wheel

Speedline Truck has launched a new ET 135, 22.5×11.75” light alloy wheel with 5,000kg payload for use with DAF, IVECO and SCANIA vehicles. The SLT 3063 wheel further bolsters Speedline Truck’s programme of 5,000kg load bearing wheels. The wheel spans the 26 and 32mm bolt hole bore. The wheel is being presented at the IAA for utility vehicles in Hannover.

Conti to open ‘first of kind’ retreading plant in Germany

During its press conference at the IAA Commercial Vehicles show in Hannover, Germany, Continental announced it is establishing a new truck and bus tyre retreading plant plus a facility to recycle rubber from used tyres at its Hannover headquarters. The company claims the facility will be the first of its kind worldwide and will make use of the synergies between the retreading and recycling production. An investment of “more than ten million euros” will go into the ContiLifeCycle plant project, and more than 100 new jobs will be created at Continental’s Hannover-Stöcken site.

New Hankook releases planned for IAA

Last year’s IAA show in Frankfurt, Germany drew tens of thousands to view the latest cars and automotive technology. This year the IAA focuses on commercial vehicles, and at the 2012 exhibition – which takes place in Hannover between 20 and 27 September – several leading tyre makers will show off their latest products and developments. At Hankook’s exhibition space, in Hall 16, Stand A30, the Korean manufacturer will hold the world premiere for the latest additions to its ‘e-cube’ concept. These new products, says Hankook, take “into account the current spirit of the times” and thus the range has “correspondingly been developed further in regard to the increasing demands in the area of environmental friendliness.”

Bridgestone to present ‘Total Tyre Care’ portfolio at IAA

The upcoming IAA Commercial Vehicles 2012 fair in Hannover, Germany will serve as an opportunity for Bridgestone to present its new Total Tyre Care programme. Describing Total Tyre Care, Bridgestone says it offers fleets “carefree tyre management through a flexible range of complementary truck tyre programmes.”

Conti names new head of Americas truck tyre technologies

On 31 August, Roger Stansbie, currently director of truck tyre technologies for Continental Tire the Americas’ Commercial Vehicle Tire business unit, will retire. Stansbie intends to return to the UK following his retirement and will be succeeded in his US-based role by Czech Republic national Libor Heger, who has been employed by Continental AG and its associated companies for the last 13 years.

Conti to preview bumper truck/bus range at IAA

Continental says it plans to premiere its next generation of truck tyres at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show 2012, which takes place in Hannover, Germany from 20 to 27 September. According to the German tyre maker’s account, there should be plenty to see – Continental says it will launch the “most comprehensive range of truck and bus tyres in the history of the company” during 2013. Nikolai Setzer, head of Continental’s Tyres division, Dr. Andreas Esser, head of the Commercial Vehicle Tyres business unit and Herbert Mensching, head of Marketing and Sales Truck Tyres EMEA, will discuss this and other current plans and developments at a press conference on 18 September.

German researchers present tyre that adapts to weather, road conditions

At Hannover Messe 2012, the exhibition billed as the world’s most important technology event, a Leipzig, Germany-based research group unveiled what it calls an “adaptive tyre”. According to the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK Leipzig) research group, the tyre adapts itself to weather and road conditions. Regardless of whether a vehicle is being driven on the motorway or gravel roads, in sunshine, snow or rain, the adaptive tyre reportedly recognises the conditions and adapts its tread grooves automatically.

Continental dominates ADAC summer tyre tests

The latest tyre tests produced by German motoring association ADAC, in partnership with OAMTC (the Austrian equivalent) were dominated by tyres produced by Continental. But there were also surprisingly strong performances from emerging and second line brands such as Apollo and Barum set against a disappointing result for Infinity.

Conti: 3 – 6 metres between wet braking tyre label bandings

Following the European authorities’ announcement of the latest tyre labelling regulations, Continental has also given more freshly released details of the labelling legislation, breaking them down into a more digestible form. As far as the wet braking category is concerned, vehicles with tyres in Class A stop are set to stop in the shortest distance from 50mph, whilst vehicles with tyres from Class B will take 3-6 metres longer. This trend continues for the subsequent values and results in a braking difference of over 18 metres from a vehicle in Class A to Class F.

Trelleborg to show new TM1000 at Agritechnica 2011

Trelleborg Wheel Systems is planning to present its new TM1000 tyres at the Agritechnica show to be held in Hannover, Germany, from 15 to 19 November, 2011. According to the company, the stand theme “flying into the future”, represents the aim and values of the Trelleborg initiative for the future of agriculture. This will be illustrated by an aircraft fitted with TM1000 High Power agricultural tyres.

Starco announces senior OEM appointment

As of November 2011, former GKN Wheels Carpenedolo sales director Thomas Ruedl will take on the role of group sales director, OEM Key Accounts at Starco. In his new role, Ruedl will report to regional director Jef de Smedt and have overall responsibility for Starco’s existing and future OEM customers. First priority for Ruedl in his new position will be prioritising Starco’s agricultural, industrial and trailers/caravans markets; this will be followed by the horticultural and internal transport markets. The new OEM Key accounts group sales director will work in close liaison with local Starco sales entities, which will also continue their daily contact with global OEM customers as before.
