TyreSafe van focus boosted by Mercedes-Benz membership

In recent times TyreSafe has focused on rising levels of unsafe and incorrectly inflated van tyres on UK roads, and the safety organisation reports it has been able to significantly increase in van and truck expertise by signing up Mercedes-Benz Vans as its latest vehicle manufacturer member. Commenting on Mercedes-Benz Vans’ ambition of building the world’s safest vans, TyreSafe states their partnership is “ideally placed” to educate and remind van users about the importance of correct tyre care and maintenance.

Second tyre recyclers innovation award to be presented in June

Leading companies and individuals involved with end of life tyres are to have their efforts recognised by the industry. The second Michelin Innovation Award will be presented at the Tyre Recovery Association’s (TRA) annual dinner on Friday 17 June. The award will be presented to the company or person judged to have made the most significant innovation in this key area of the industry.

Acclaim for Nokian tyres in Scandinavian, CIS tests

In addition to recent positive reviews in German motoring magazines, Nokian reports its summer tyres have met with success in Scandinavian and Russian tyre tests. The recently introduced Hakka Green summer tyre won an eight-tyre (size 205/55 R16) comparative test held by Finnish magazine Tuulilasi. This most recent addition to the Hakka summer line-up was especially praised for its excellent handling properties on dry and wet. “The best properties of the tyre include balanced and unchanging properties, both on wet and dry surfaces,” stated Tuulilasi. When discussing the tyre’s properties on wet roads, Tuulilasi noted that its neutrality and ease of driving in any situation.

Pirelli promotes two motorcycle tyres with cashback offer

Pirelli has announced a new cashback offer of £25 to UK riders purchasing sets of its Diablo Rosso Corsa or new Diablo Rosso II tyres. The hypersport segment Rosso Corsa, launched last year, is the Italian manufacturer’s “first tyre developed using technology and research gained as a direct result of Pirelli’s involvement in the World Superbike series,” it says, while the just-launched Rosso II – a sports tyre designed for road use – contains similar motorsport-derived technologies. The Diablo Rosso Corsa and Diablo Rosso II are available in the front size 120/70ZR17, with rear fitments: 160/60ZR17, 180/55ZR17, 190/50ZR17 and 190/55ZR17.

The British Franchisers Association has announced a shortlist of 13 franchisors for the 2011 bfa HSBC Franchisor of the Year Awards, supported by Express Newspapers. The finalists were selected from entries spanning multiple sectors, business size and locations across the UK and include online tyre operation etyres nominated under the brand builder of the year award.

Continental recommends global OEMs adopt direct TPMS technology

Continental recommends car manufacturers worldwide adopt the consistent use of direct measuring technology in their new car models to ensure “vehicle tyres are always inflated to an optimum level.” Writing in a press statement promoting the international tyre, TPMS and automotive supplier’s position on the issue, Continental said its recommendation is based on “steadily rising requirements to take on TPMS” and also reflects the “significant potential of direct measuring technology, making it possible to exploit the greater contribution to CO2 reduction.”

Westlake joins TyreSafe

Westlake Tyres, which are produced by the Hangzhou Zhongce Rubber Company (ZC Rubber) and distributed in Europe by Eskay Tyres Ltd. – part of the Al Dobowi Group, has joined TyreSafe. According to a statement announcing the news, Westlake will use its technical expertise to assist TyreSafe in its campaigns aimed at improving road safety.

National Tyres to provide AA Tyres Online

National Tyres and Autocare is proud to announce the launch of AA Tyres, a new online tyre shop powered by National. National secured the contract to provide the tyre shop which has been integrated into the AA’s own website, offering special discounted prices on tyres online and automotive parts in-branch to AA members. The site, which is now live at www.theaa.com, follows on from a similar move by well-known e-tailer Blackcircles.com and AA-competitor RAC.

For its part, GITI Tire (UK) Ltd. gave three new tyres their British debut. The first, the GAU861 made not only its British but European debut by appearing at the show. A new all-position pattern specifically designed for the urban waste sector of the market, GAU861 is currently in development and is expected to become available in 295/80 R22.5 later this year. Next up , the GDL617 is a new non-directional long haul drive axle pattern, which is also currently in development. Like the GAU861, this too is expected to enter distribution later on in 2011, although this product is set to be offered in “a variety of sizes.” The final new product on show was the GAR821, which is a new pattern specifically designed for regional bus operations and featuring a reinforced sidewall, solid shoulder and deep tread for “minimised impact damage…mileage performance and reduced noise emissions.” As well as the new tyres, the company also gave a further six existing products publicity at the show.

Motorcycle tyre neglect needs to be addressed: TyreSafe

UK tyre safety campaign group TyreSafe is currently running its motorcycle-specific tyre safety month to coincide with the commencement of the riding season – welcomed in by the excellent weather in the UK this weekend. The organisation is highlighting the 82 motorcycle accidents in 2009 where illegal, defective or underinflated tyres were a contributory factor (Department for Transport figures). Although this number represents a slight decrease on 2008, each one is an avoidable accident, says Stuart Jackson, chairman, TyreSafe.

Dunlop Aircraft Tyres lands five-year Icelandair Boeing 757 deal

Dunlop Aircraft Tyres has announced that it has signed up to supply tyres to the 28 aircraft that are maintained by Icelandair Technical Services. The five-year agreement covers both the supply of new tyres and retreading for a fleet of 16 aircraft operated by Icelandair on passenger and cargo routes, as well as 12 flown by airlines in the Nordics and Russia. The company says the deal underlines its high-flying position with Boeing 757-200 operators like Icelandair; Dunlop also supports other major European 757-200 operators such as DHL, First Choice Airways and Thomas Cook.

Nokian to build second plant in Russia

At the company’s Annual General Meeting on April 7, Nokian Tyres president and CEO will share plans about the construction of a second factory in Russia. This new plant will be erected alongside Nokian’s existing plant in Vsevolozhsk. “Market outlook has strengthened clearly and we need more production capacity,” reported Gran in a statement prior to the AGM. “We, together with the local authorities, are preparing a new plant next to the current one, which will increase our annual car tyre capacity by five to six million tyres. Negotiations about tax relieves and infrastructure investments are in their final stage.” Gran added that the factory will enter production in 2012 and capacity increases will be made in the two years to 2014.

TyreSafe updates caravan axle load and tyre inflation info

The caravanning season is almost upon us and TyreSafe has updated its caravan tyre safety leaflet, revising the axle load and tyre inflation pressure tables. This update has been issued following technical discussions between the tyre industry and caravan manufacturers relating to the industry’s ongoing recommendation that the maximum vehicle load should not exceed 90 per cent of the combined tyre load capacity, as indicated by load index.
