MotoGP: Friday falls “unfortunate”, Pedrosa sets German GP record

After MotoGP’s German GrandPrix Friday morning practice session, it looked like Bridgestone may have some explaining to do, with some of the sport’s fastest riders experiencing falls after losing grip. Assistant to director, Motorsport Tyre Development Division, Hirohide Hamashima told the press that unusually cold conditions during the session, coupled with the course’s modest quota of three right-hand corners, had combined to leave riders with little heat in the right side of their front tyres. The tyre supplier brought hard and extra hard front and medium and hard asymmetric rear slicks for the weekend, which Dani Pedrosa used to set new lap and total race time records on the Sunday in his second race since returning from injury. Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner spent the race locked in a three-way battle for the lead, ahead of a three-way battle for fourth and a four-way battle for seventh, keeping the 101,309 race-day fans thoroughly entertained.

Delticom “well prepared” for second-half following Q2 growth

Although Delticom reports the summer tyre trade in Europe has so far “lagged behind expectations”, the company behind mytytres.co.uk and some of Europe’s other best-known online tyre retail portals increased its year-on-year revenues and earnings during the second quarter of 2011. April was admittedly described as being a comparatively weak month for Delticom, yet the company says it managed to offset this with positive figures in May. The following month delivered a noticeable year-on-year increase in tyre sales, Delticom added.

Bridgestone to make more preferred tyres available in MotoGP

Bridgestone has announced a proposed revision to its tyre allocation procedure and selected tyre compounds for the remaining races of the 2011 MotoGP season, effective from the Czech Republic Grand Prix. The supplier worked with the Safety Commission – on which riders, FIM, IRTA and Dorna are represented – to decide on the proposal in response to rider feedback. Bridgestone has in the last 18 months developed and introduced its extra soft compound in 2010 and selected softer tyre compounds for the Catalunya, British, Dutch, Italian and German Grands Prix so far this year. The US Grand Prix at Laguna Seca next weekend will see softer rear slicks introduced to attempt to improve warm-up performance, especially as the morning sessions can be cool.

TyreSafe warns bikers of extra load problems

TyreSafe has advised motorcyclists that the extra weight resulting from a pillion passenger or pannier loads – common in holiday season – means that tyre pressures should be checked and adjusted accordingly against the bike manufacturers’ recommended levels. Under-inflation (or overloading) over a long period may cause rapid shoulder wear, excessive flexing and deterioration of the casing, which can pose a serious safety risk for bikers. Conversely, over-inflation may result in a reduced contact patch on the road and accelerated wear in the centre of the tread. The tyre could also be more susceptible to impact damage, as well as providing an uncomfortable ride.

ETRMA: 96% of European used tyres treated in 2010

European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association (ETRMA) has published data showing that the recovery rate of used tyres (UT) in Europe grew to 96 per cent in 2010. According to the association, this high recovery level is at the top of all waste streams.

In the last decade, tyre industry, dealers and ELT operators have substantially improved ELT utilization. Europe has built up a real experience of three types of ELT management schemes: The tax model, although very limited; free market model and producer responsibility model. ETRMA’s view is that the rapid improvement of the performance of ELT management has been reached “through a sustained deployment of the producer responsibility model in the past decade.” However those operating under the free market model in the UK, which according to the ETRMA’s own figures produces outcomes, which at 98 per cent are 2 percentage points better than the European average, may disagree with this analysis.
