As of this autumn, the orange oil-infused tyre will be highlighted in a two-year exhibit as the Museum of Science in the US city of Boston. The “Making a Greener Tire” interactive display, which will be in the museum’s Transportation, Renewable Energy and Nanotechnology area, revolves around the BluEarth-1’s technology, which combines oil extracted from orange peels with silica and natural rubber to form “Super Nano-Power Rubber” (SNPR), a substance initially utilised in Yokohama’s dB Super E-spec tyre. Also to be featured is the BluEarth-1’s Airtex Advanced Liner, designed to reduce the amount of air loss from the tyre.

US thieves steal $200,000 worth of tyres

Recent thefts of tyres from parked trucks in the UK have been outdone in terms of scale and audacity by a crime that took place in the US state of Florida last week. Tire Review reports that a group of thieves stole two semi-trailers full of passenger, performance and light truck/SUV tyres from behind a tyre dealership in Fort Lauderdale in the early hours of July 27. Unlike their British counterparts, who loaded tyres into their own vehicle or vehicles before making a getaway, the US criminals saved considerable time and effort by bringing their own Freightliner tractor unit to remove the trailers from the store’s loading dock.

Pirelli’s softest F1 tyres to take on hotter challenge in Hungary

The tight and twisty Hungaroring on the outskirts of Budapest will offer an increased hot weather challenge to Pirelli’s soft and super soft tyres in the Hungarian Grand Prix. The circuit’s infrequent use makes the surface dusty and slippery that Pirelli expect will offer more grip as the weekend progresses and rubber is laid down. The slippery surface is the reason for the supplier’s choice of its PZero Yellow and PZero Red tyres, with 16 tight corners and a low average speed making the circuit better suited to the softer tyres. The high temperatures are likely to represent a conservation challenge, especially since this is the first time the supersoft Red compound will be used in very warm weather.

90% UHP surge in Europe helps Hankook to quarterly sales record

Hankook Tire has announced second quarter global sales of KRW 1,580 billion (£917 million), a rise of 21 per cent year on year, and the company’s best ever quarter. Operating profit for the quarter was KRW 110.7 billion. The region where the company experienced the greatest growth was the emerging Russian market, where Hankook nearly doubled its sales. In other major territories, sales grew by between a third and a half, with European figures at the top end of this scale. Hankook said its figures demonstrate the “increased recognition” of the quality of its tyres, as the ultra high performance segment outstripped total sales growth in its major markets, most notably in Europe, where the Korean manufacturer sold 89.6 per cent more UHP tyres year on year. Original equipment sales in the segment were also up 90 per cent in consolidated non-domestic markets.
