Pirelli brings soft and medium tyres to home GP

Pirelli has good reason to anticipate this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix at Monza more than other events in the calendar; located in parkland just half an hour from the Italian firm’s headquarters to the north of Milan, the track – one of Formula One’s fastest with an average speed in the region of 250kmh – has been integral to the brand’s motorsport history. Pirelli will bring its P Zero White (medium) and P Zero Yellow (soft) tyres to Monza, which the supplier anticipates will provide plenty of scope for the teams to use different tyre strategies.

Four options? The whys and wherefores of winter tyres in the UK

There is no question that winter 2010/2011 was a great success when it came to the sales of cold weather tyres. Many wholesalers and distributors found that their projections were far too low; some wholesalers reported that they sold three to four times more than they expected, while tyre manufacturers said they would have supplied more if their factories could produce them fast enough.

The fact that it was the second consecutive “severe” winter in the UK really helped drive home the issue. And the combined efforts of retail chains; car dealerships and the industry mean that there is still momentum in this pre-season before the mercury drops. ATS Euromaster for example bought in £3 million of winter tyre stock last season and are doubling it this year, (see separate article for more details). Meanwhile Mercedes and BMW began promoting tyre hotels, making the two-sets-of-wheels model a reality. But what about this winter and the winters to come? Tyres & Accessories asked Bridgestone North Region sales and marketing director Andy Lane, who has the unique responsibility of overseeing sales in the classic winter markets of the Nordic countries and the more complex and temperate conditions of the UK.

Hankook to launch new eco-winter tyre

While winter conditions in many of our neighbouring European countries are much more severe than here in the UK, Hankook representatives point out that some of these boast lower accident rates. Why? A major factor in this is down to tyre choice. Hankook therefore believes it is essential that “we educate our customers on winter tyres and contribute towards a reduction in motoring accidents during winter.”

Tyresure launches new Trailer/Caravan and RV TPMS kit

Tyresure has launched a dedicated system created specifically for the leisure and towing market. EU legislation has dictated that all passenger cars must have TPMS fitted from the factory as a legal requirement from 2012. Although this hasn’t yet been rolled out as a mandatory fitment in the leisure market and doesn’t apply to vehicles produced before this model year many industry experts feel that it is only a matter of time before safety-conscious manufacturers start including this in the options list, at least.

Ambulance Trusts to use Cold Weather Tyres

Ambulances across the Midlands will be driven on cold weather tyres this winter to enable crews to reach patients more safely. Both the West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) and East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) will use Michelin’s Agilis Alpin and Alpin 4 ranges across their fleets – a total 530 ambulances and 308 rapid response cars. The decision comes after the neighbouring trusts’ fleet managers compared standard tyres with cold weather tyres at a test day at the MIRA track in Warwickshire in June.

Kenda’s second Yun-Lin plant enters service

Kenda’s new passenger car tyre factory, built alongside its existing Yun-Lin plant in Taiwan, has now entered operation. The new plant is said to have a daily capacity of 5,000 tyres per day and according to the Taiwan Economic News it will contribute towards a gradual rise in Kenda’s daily output in Taiwan in China; it says output will begin increasing in the third quarter of 2011 and should reach 30,000 tyres per day by the end of the year – an increase of 50 per cent over current capacity. Most output from the new factory will be shipped to Europe and the US and is expected to contribute an additional NT$1.8 billion (£37 million) to annual revenues.

Nordic Tyres (UK) imports Nokian passenger car winter rubber

Nokian Tyres styles itself as “the only tyre manufacturer in the world that focuses on products and services that facilitate safe transportation in Nordic conditions”, and its 2011 range reflects the company's expertise in the area, developed in variable Central European conditions. The manufacturer says its WR D3 and WR A3 tyres are “designed for different vehicles and drivers but for any winter weather”. The company calls its tyres “environmentally friendly premium products” that feature nanotechnology and canola oil, which helps to improve their reliability in the winter conditions of Central Europe. Nordic Tyres (UK) usually imports Nokian Industrial, Forestry and Agriculture, though increased demand in the last UK winter led to its decision to stock passenger car winter patterns. The UK distributor says it suggests “early contact… in order to meet expected demand before winter really bites”.

Stapleton’s aims to deliver cost-effective winter and all-season tyres

In this country the majority of motorists are not in the habit of fitting winter tyres at the end of autumn as they do in most other Northern European countries. A TyreSafe survey conducted last year showed that while 54 per cent of UK drivers felt that they were less safe when driving in winter, only a tiny fraction of them – just 3 per cent – actually took the precaution of fitting winter tyres. Admittedly, winter tyres are recommended, if not compulsory by law, across much of the continent – but the fact that they are not legally required here should not lead consumers to think they’re any less necessary – or any less valuable as a contribution to road safety.

JATMA report shows marked Japanese recovery in 2010

Although the earthquake and tsunami in Japan earlier this year caused original equipment tyre sales to decline there, mid-2011 financial quarter results show aftermarket sector sales are continuing to improve, building on signs of recovering demand first seen – as figures recently published by the Japanese Automobile Tyre Manufacturers Association show – in 2010. The association’s report, titled “Tyre Industry of Japan 2011”, reveals growth occurred in both the original equipment and aftermarket segments last year, the first time production in Japan has increased in the last three years.
