Richard Edy dies aged 79

Richard Edy, who was NTDA director for 25 years, died on Tuesday 13 February aged 79. He leaves behind his wife, sister, three children and eight grandchildren. Edy served as director of the association from 1989 to 2014.

TyrePoint ‘Gobsmacked’ to win Tyre Retailer of the Year Award

Maidstone-based independent dealer TyrePoint Services is celebrating after winning Small Tyre Retailer in the UK, after winning the hotly contested title at the National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) 2023 Awards. The family-owned business, which is a member of the Michelin Quality Centre network and located on the Parkwood Industrial Estate, beat off competition from other single-site tyre dealerships from across the UK to win the prestigious award.

Merityre director’s funeral details announced

Following the death of Jolyon Pope, Merityre representatives asked Tyres & Accessories to publish details of the funeral of their beloved director on behalf of his family. Jolyon Pope’s funeral has been confirmed for Thursday 9th November at 12 noon at Chilbolton Church, Chilbolton, Hampshire, SO20 6BQ and afterwards at Chilbolton Village Hall to remember Jolyon.

Merityre director Jolyon Pope (16.9.1952 – 5.10.2023)

Jolyon Pope, director of tyre retailer Merityre Specialists Ltd, died suddenly on Thursday, 5 October. A well-liked, long-standing, and respected figure in the tyre industry of the UK and beyond, Pope leaves behind a wife, Jennie, their two children and two grandchildren. The National Tyre Distributors Association, of which Merityre is a long-standing member, informed Tyrepress of the sad and unexpected news. The association’s team and executive officers said they were both shocked and saddened to hear the news, offering the following obituary.

G&S Tyres joins Marangoni Ringtread Network

After more than 30 years as a Bandag franchisee, G&S Tyres has joined the Marangoni Ringtread Network. The company has also joined the NTDA as both a retreader and a tyre distributor – the latter in relation to its on-site car tyre fitting business. Tyres & Accessories recently visited the company’s Barking, London headquarters in order to find out more.

Tanvic Tyres completes 3-day truck tyre training course delivered by Michelin

All of Tanvic Tyres’ 25 technicians have received National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) Category One Accreditation following the company’s bespoke three-day training programme, delivered by the Michelin Training and Information Centre (MTIC). The independent business said the course would boost its staff’s career development and improve the service levels it delivers to customers. The course was delivered at the Tanvic Tyres depot in Newark, near Nottingham.

Editorial: Dawn of a new era

As the June edition of Tyres & Accessories went to press, the UK celebrated the coronation of a new monarch. Tyres & Accessories marked the occasion too, as this special coronation edition demonstrates from its cover celebratory onwards. And, if NTDA HQ’s announcement about taking coronation day off to celebrate, paired with the association’s encouragement that tyre retailers from across the UK should do the same is anything to go by, we certainly weren’t the only ones.

REACT exceeds 9000, expands into Republic of Ireland

The NTDA has now issued more than 9000 REACT licences to commercial tyre technicians assessed as competent to work safely at the roadside across the UK. The need for such a system is clear. Prior to the introduction of REACT in 2011, some technicians were seriously injured and others killed while working at the roadside.

MOT to feature self-driving vehicle standards by 2030

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has put limiting road casualties, emissions and particulate matter within its Strategic Plan to 2025 and Vision to 2030, which were published 4 April 2023. DVSA’s Strategic Plan and Vision also seek to demonstrate how the agency will harness data in order to improve MOT quality control. Both are likely to impact the way garages and fast-fits that offer MOT testing operation in future.
